It seems people are far more caught up in their own thoughts and ideas and the "What's in it for me?" attitude is pervasive! This makes it more difficult to build good relationships, but I do hope it's a challenge I can overcome!!

I can relate to your perspective. I could write a book on my own experiences which would seem to support your suspicion here. There is a thing called "intrinsic value of a person." It carries me through trying times. I'm a bit of a Black Sheep, but...I value myself and my integrity that Ive fought long and hard to keep. I'm glad ive chosen to do that. No criminal record, not looking over my shoulder any MORE than common sense advises me to.

I finally learned it's envy on their part. Envy and jealousy from a narcissistic person isn't manageable. Not everyone will like you, and those that don't like you will do everything they can to make your life miserable. Either you work them or you're related to them. There's nothing you can do to make THEM change, so YOU have to change. Bless these people and then live YOUR LIFE FOR YOUSELF.
People come and people go. Not even relatives stay with you until the day you die.

not everyone will respect YOU even if you respect yourself. Envy and jealousy are the bad thing. I've never been jealous or envious of anyone or anything they had. I simply didn't have time, and I still don't.
When YOU become your BEST SELF....not eveyone will be on your side. Some will do anything and everything to derail you no matter how generous you have been to them.
For me personally it was my younger, 11 years younger, sister. She recently died and very painful death. She lied, cheated, stole from me and called me names and told me to "drop dead" from the time she could talk.
No I do not miss her. Yes I wish she had died decades ago. My life would hae been better and quite a bit different. Yes, we DID have a mother, but she was an only child herself and didn't know how to raise "sisters".....
God says there is no accidents....but one day a few years back I came home to more than 25 messages left on my physical answer machine connected to my landline. I had changed my cell phone number 3 times and kept those old phones and the text messages she had left.
I'm glad she's gone, but the damage she did can't be undone.

Ive noticed that sometimes empathy and doing some of these things are perceived as weakness and can make others try to take advantage of you. Standing up for yourself is important.. i hate to say it, but if you have a reputation as someone who can fight and not take any bullshi*t , u can command respect. Ive seen it many times. The guy who is too nice gets taken advantage of. Period

Oh yes. At work, in the 1980s, I had no respect from my bosses because I refused to steal for them, choosing to protect as much as I could, the goods of the people they were stealing from instead. The bosses absolutely hated me and took away my Saturday off and changed it to a week day instead. Every single full time employee got a Saturday off except me. The weekday full timers were not very friendly at times and I felt invisible a lot of the time. The Saturday staff, (young women) were completely different and friendly and respectful right from the start, so unknowingly, the bosses did me a favour and in a way, I was getting a Saturday off. I was getting a Saturday off from being harassed and disrespected. I miss those very attractive young women very often. Young women who, in their manners and general demeanour, shamed the much older weekday people who were old enough to know better. I hope the Saturday staff have had blissfully happy lives full of love. They were responsible for keeping me from suicide due to their kindness and gentleness and great humour. There are many very decent, wonderful young people in the world and I have so much respect for them.

Lady, AI is a tool that people use these days to edit (finding better or the right words and to fine tune a speech or a piece of writing), I’m sure even you have tried it.
