I was kind to look after my mother when Alzheimers disabled her at age 81. She suffered for 10 years until her passing on Feb 2022,

This is the kind of message that changed my life. Up until 2022 I was the miss "never say no" and I had been paying dearly for it. The day I made up my mind to start saying NO to everyone except when it is convenient to say yes, was the day I found myself and who I really am as a person. I had lost my sense of self and worth, trying to make everyone else happy except for the one person who needed me the most. Myself! I've lost a lot of friends in the last 2 years and I'm so glad they're gone. The few who are left are just enough for me to continue being a kind person while keeping my boundaries in place always. They are my friends by choice not friends for benefits! I love the new me so much.

I used to love people in general ,but lately I have come to the conclusion that almost all people do not deserve my respect. I now rely on myself because I understand and appreciate respect and kindness much more than the average Joe. It’s a very sad truth ,but it is true that respectful, kind people are very few and far between. To others like me, you have my deep respect and understanding.

In college, I was one of a few guys with a car living in an off-campus housing about 5 miles from school. 4 other guys became dependent on me to take them to school. After weeks of being their chauffeur with no one offering me gas money I became resentful but didn't want to offend them. So I started leaving 15 minutes earlier without notice and would leave them. Once they caught on to that they to adjust to be ready 15 minutes early and would meet me at my car. I then started leaving 30 minutes early and they eventually caught on to that and would almost stake out my movements to be ready to dash the moment they saw me open my front door. I noticed they all seemed to have money for luxury items and their vices but not once offered even one dollar for gas. One morning, with my car loaded full of these freeloaders, and my gastank on E, i pulled in to the gas station just outside of our neighborhood. I asked how much money they had to put towards gas. Two spoke up and said they had no money while the other two stayed quiet. With my indicator past E I told them the car won't make it to school and back without gas. They all looked very perplexed not by the current dilemma but by my sudden courage to establish boundaries and put my needs first. Still no one could come up with anything except me. I put my last $20 on the gas then promptly drove back towards the neighborhood. Confused they asked, where are you going. I answerd back home. They asked you're not going to school, I said yes I am, however not with you'll. I remember feeling so empowered as i looked back in my review the sight of them standing on the curb and looking bewildered. That moment changed how I conducted myself going forward. Im still kind but I learned also to balance that with the ability to say no.
