Much easier if you just export and check the "use art board box" and it exports just the elements within the art board.

I do exactly what's been said in this video. The moment I crop within the pathfinder, everything but the overlaying square is gone. The square loses it's fill as well. So basically this just removes the content of my entire artboard?

I tried this and it removed all of my changes (changes in opacity, for one) and froze my artwork and placed all artwork into the top layer. there's got to be a different way.
