I live in the woods in central Virginia and have been planning to start turning saplings into bonsai as a new hobby. Was just thinking about doing the maples, but will watch to see how your black walnut works as I have hundreds in my woods. It is one of the most common saplings I see.
@@woodithwoodard3132 I would say maple would be your best shot, but Black Walnut may be an option as well. So far my black walnut has bounced back well from this prune. It is already putting out loads of new branches. It is said that Black Walnuts are not a great option for bonsai due to leaf size not reducing, but like you I also have loads of Black Walnuts in my area so I’m trying it as a bonsai anyway. 🤣 I’d say go for it! I’ll make sure to keep updates on this Black Walnut every few months.
Thanks, Andy! These were fun ones to work on. Have you ever tried growing a walnut tree as a bonsai? I'm not seeing a lot of examples online and was curious on how successful they are as bonsai.
@@Bonsaicrazyno worries! I’ve been very curious about if anyone else has had experience with them as a bonsai. Maybe there is a reason I haven’t come across many examples yet. 😅
I found four black walnut trees this spring and they are all doing very well (thanks to squirrels for buring them). I got two last spring as well but the chipmunks dug them up. Pro tip. Cover the top of the pot with wire mesh to keep them out. They will dig up the tree to get the nut and destroy the tree. Same with the Oak trees I found one this and last spring and they were destroyed.. Chipmunks.
@@movcon2793 I’m glad to hear your black walnut trees are doing well! Great pro tip as well. Those chipmunks and squirrels sure are stinkers. I’ve been using large rocks on top of my pots right up next to the trunk and that seems to be working well. Even a few vertical pieces of shale seems to keep them away as well. Did you bonsai your black walnuts or just have them in large containers?
@@dreamingofbonsai I made them into a bonsai. Based on my research they don't make a good specimens due to leaf size and they are hard to shrink. Every spring the squirrels give me a half dozen trees or so. Keeping them away from the squirrels is an issue. I have vego raised garden beds in my garden and they are easy to harvest. Cheers from Ottawa Canada.
@@movcon2793 oh nice! Yeah I’ve heard the same about black walnuts and how they don’t make great bonsai… but I’m trying anyway! 🤣 Cheers from eastern Pennsylvania!
I'm sure! I hope you've been having good luck! It can consume a lot of time for sure. I've been keeping my social media content pretty much exclusively to RUclips these days. But I created an instagram account for "Dreaming of Bonsai" and i've been toying with the idea of terraforming some of my videos into short-form 9 x 16 vertical videos. I haven't (and probably will not) create any RUclips shorts for my bonsai videos. I'm not a fan of RUclips shorts ... but I think a short-form version on instagram would be cool.
@dreamingofbonsai hey man if I've learned anything about marketing it's that if you aren't posting content it's a bit of a missed opportunity these days. Not to mention I have so many things I'm passionate about that I tend to love sharing my passions with others.
@@Akatsuki-En very true! I’m a huge comics and movie fan and I’ve been debating creating some videos here that are non-bonsai related. Maybe more of a pop culture vlog or deep dives.

@@bonsaiexpression Oh thats a bummer they don't reduce in leaf size. I may just keep that walnut as an experimental tree then. 😅
