DISCLAIMER: It's been a year since this gameplay footage has been uploaded. Anyone just stumbling upon this video should take it with a grain of salt, most of the things shown off are already or will be in the process of being adjusted and possibly even remade from scratch due to the dated nature of the map and the assets within them. Do not consider anything you see as final unless told by us, I had to post this due to newcomers and content creators assuming things wrong.
I remember a very old video, from the time of Menter, that in this part where you face 2 Hunters, both had their eyes emitting orange lights (which illuminated the place), there were even dynamic shadows and the like, there was no way to test If it is still possible to do this effect, with the current resources of Source 1 (I think it is SDK2013)? Because at the time it was something very flashy and intense, it left a greater sensation in the battle/chase. I hope that at least part 1 comes out in 2024 with 1h or 1h30 of gameplay, keep up the work and don't surrender, soldiers.
@@felipecastillo9940 The video you are talking about is on the main channel of the original lead programmer, Chris, the effect itself is possible to do and always has been but it's very expensive due to being projected textures, from what Menter told us they wanted to have a mechanic where if the Hunters would get too close with their lights it would distort your vision while using the NVGs. As for "Part 1", there's going to be a demo next year that will hopefully have about an hour of playtime from the very first chapter of the mod + the possibility of having some bonus maps, the release entirely depends on when we finish it. Don't want to give out release dates of any kind as there is no point of hyping people up and having pressure on the team to deliver on said dates.
love it! I'm a little disappointed the Synth Soldier blood is blue as opposed to the white we see from hunters and striders, the blue feels a tad generic But other than minor nitpicks like that this looks like it could be a great mod when it's finished. Just a bit of polishing up, excited to see what happens with this!
This is awesome! Although one little nitpick is the supply crates says Army on them though Shephard, the HECU, and the Phoenix Command from OP2 are a Marine Corps. Unless of course these guys are in fact Army, either way this is something that I wished Opposing Force 2 could've been!
Maybe the Army supply crates are leftovers from National Guard units that refused to surrender and stashed them hoping to aid resistance cells that would continue the fight? Cause last I checked the Phoenix Marines are a mix of surviving military units, from different service branches and civilian militia forces that had fled into exile with the intent of gathering strength to fight back after the US Government had surrendered to the Combine.
I was observing the original back at the day, and from what I remember the mod had a bit of scope creep, I think they planned more or less 8-10 chapters before they decided to shorten it into like 5-6 chapters and finally Urban Chaos chapter only. They had planned some interesting locales like the dreary forest (Deadlock Conflict chapter), some nondescript ones like the Underground Complex, although I do not remember the details aside from that Urban Chaos was an introduction to a wider problem caused by the Combine/Race X/both, with our first goal to screw up the Combine Citadel's teleportation to Rookstad. Later on we would embark on a trek spanning a bit of former United States as Phoenix's problem solver. Urban Chaos -> Desert chapters (I think it had something like an abandoned town and Malanth Worm boss battle) -> UG Complex? (possibly something related to portals, Black Mesa's black site?) -> Deadlock Conflict (pine forest with a lot of open spaces, think Episode 2, original demo had one map from that particular chapter)-> whatever else ended up happening to Shephard before reaching the end
Considering we renamed the mod to just Urban Chaos, we'll be finishing the 2014 story that ends during the city chapter with the same name. We're mainly doing this because we managed to talk to MenteR a year back, who even though didn't remember that much, has explained quite a few about their plans and what he could remember of the story. What they had planned before the nail in the coffin is quite short so we're repurposing some of the maps and making newer ones to tie in the gaps between them. We also changed some of the story just enough so it makes more sense but this shouldn't alarm anyone as this was done so the mod will be more understandable and fun as a result, not saying the original wasn't but it no longer fits today's standards and was somewhat dull in comparison. This means some weapons like the Vortex Gun, CLR & Flechette Shotgun shown off won't make a return in our version as there are way too many as it is. We will still have most weapons shown off though and some special ones. The reason why we're not doing the 2009 or 2010-2014 story (before the shortening even further to Urban Chaos) is due to the fact of how much they had planned and how long it is would take way too long, most likely ending up with us cancelling the mod too. The good news is that we're planning to fix/update some of the old maps that we won't be using in the main story as Bonus Maps that you will be able to play to see how it would have went, with Bonus Maps back it will also give the ability for modders to do their own stuff using the mod as a base so anyone can take a crack in reviving some parts of the mod if they so want to or make something entirely new, something like what they had planned with The Lost Chapters in the past if anyone remembers that. Before anyone says that we're changing too much or something along those lines, MenteR surfaced a month or so back and has been very happy with what we're doing so far, basically giving the mod his official approval too.
oh hell yes, I thought this mod was gone for good! godspeed, you absolute mad lads! (P.S I'm not sure exactly what needs doing for the mod, but if voice work is ever needed, I'd be more than happy to help!)
I hope it mostly gonna be about outdoor areas. Like dirty streets, canals, construction sites etc. Cuz it`s what makes original HL2 awesome at first place.
You folks should really consider putting this on Steam when it's done, maybe add achievements, workshop support like Entropy Zero 2 did, and that game got really big on Steam, no doubt boosting its popularity by being so easily accessible.
please remade phoenix marine; the old version is so-so, if not terrible, but I won’t say anything about the eyes at all; I hope Race X will be redone from scratch as well as maps
Well guys, I hope this time everything will work out, but there is one caveat. The fact is that the original Opposing Force 2 was developed long before the release of Half-Life: Alyx and the mod was a completely fan-made point of view on the topic "what happened on Earth before the arrival of Freeman?" but now we have an official prequel in Alyx and here's the question. Will this mod feature Alyx content like resurrecting headcrabs, a working alliance, spore zombies like "Jeff", etc.? I think the presence of such things will make this mod more canonical, because we must admit that the original Opposing Force 2 is outdated in this regard.
I think they will include some HL:Arelated-ish content since they said its not 1:1 with all the original mods ideas sooo theres probably room for that. Hope this helps
@@spongedog0013 Yes, I know, but now, thanks to Alyx, we know that before the 7 hour war there were still portal storms and contamination of the earth with quarantine zones, so it is logical that Shepard will have to take a walk in one of the quarantine zones, but where is the quarantine zone and Jeff and armored headcrabs
It was mainly just us messing around, trying to get a feel for what the soundtrack should be at the time (late 90s to early y2k). Sort of left it in as a joke due to the fight with the hunters feeling like a dance off. The track has long changed since then.
The mod at some point in 2012 had a logo with the name of "Opposing Force 2: Urban Chaos" and we just kept UC from it cause it sounded cool and it fits with the events of the mod. We weren't even thinking about the game with the exact same name at the time.
I hope the reload/ammunition glitch is fix by now where if you put your gun away lets say the shotgun is a 4 rounds when you put it away and take it back out it's full reload with out you reloading it
That's a feature present in Half-Life 2 and the Episodes, it's not a bug. However we did give it a higher cooldown than what it was in the video so fights will be a bit harder.
You do realize that an entirely new team is working on this and the video in question is 10 months old by this point? Stuff has obviously changed since then.
@@AntiFurry2010 I guess you would've been disappointed 10 years ago too if it would have ever released back then. Just give it time and it will be better, it's 2023 after all and more things are possible, it's very clear that this gameplay was an early version of what the new team had.
"Everything", is unlikely, due to the state of things that they provided in 2014, and how much was saved at all. If only you knew what we have to deal with. We are trying our hardest to be as close to the OG vision as much as possible, while still making "modern" sense, so don't expect 1:1 (there is no 1:1 anyway).
I worked on the original OF2, but I couldn't tell if this one is aligned with original plans we had back then because I wasn't much involved with the story telling parts, just modelling and 2d stuff
@@Ferdam Oh wow, never thought we'd get the attention of somebody from the old team. Trying to finish the entirety of the 2011 story would be hell as there's just too much missing context and assets. I know you most likely long moved on from OF2 but is there any chance we could talk in private to help speed up development further? Mainly to get context about stuff that were otherwise not really talked about with MenteR or possibly anything that we might be still missing that could fit into the mod.
