- A few days after the launch of Half-Life's 25th anniversary update, I decided to check out the server browser during my lunch break. What immediately transfixed me was a server bearing one simple name, "Half-Life Co-op | High difficulty", with a player limit of 32.
Yes, thirty-two was the optimal amount of souls to be trapped within this hellish stamping ground, according to the server owner, and to my infinite astonishment, there was one last player slot available, just for me, so what else could I do but to jump in?
What I found inside was exactly what I expected, a gathering of 32 gamers doing their absolute best to make a playthrough of Half-Life be as miserable, offensive, chaotic, and noisy as possible for each other.
There were no rules, no admins, not even the slighest notion of any sort of order or control, just all of us crammed into a tiny shipping container and sent on our way through a positively ear-bursting adventure through Half-Life's now 25 year old campaign.

@@systemreb00ted @systemreb00ted Sven Co-op has multiple sections stitched together so there is less level load interruption plus the limited spawns and team healing/revive actualy encourages teamplay. Half-Life Co-op is very barebones and is only good for fucking around.

@@systemreb00tedhalf-life doesn't have an official co-op mode. the server owner is using a mod called "half-life: coop" to enable this. what you're seeing is essentially a custom deathmatch server with pvp disabled.
half-life's campaign is very much designed for singleplayer and needs augmentations to actually be enjoyable in co-op. sven co-op does this, but half-life coop uses the vanilla maps.
4:58 this part where the room falls silent and everything is covered in blood is horrifying.
I think this was most definitely the biggest WTF moment in the entire run for me. Left me completely baffled all the way through reloading back into the server after it crashed.

I adore how eveyrone's immediate thought process when spawning in and being stuck behind a crowd of people is to place a tripmine on the wall and jihad themselves.

Are we going to ignore how many modern games fail to correctly sync 8 players while a 1998 game manages to correctly sync 32 + AI?
Idk man, even if im a game developer my mind still blowing how great it is compare to now.
Least i can say is, how the server manage to sync the players is by teleporting it from the last loading.
But there could be more reason
@@judicatorhurayth1927 Well, if you didn't load a new area the server would still be in sync with its players. It simply has good netcode, compared to something like ArmA or a typical survival co-op game.
I think it's peer-to-peer servers suck ass typically and hosting a dedicated server works wonders.

when update came out I joined a server for this and someone was blocking a doorway for honestly multiple hours. I left and came back hours later and they were still there

Honestly! This specifically was so much fun, lol, an odd comfort. I grew up playing Valve games since the original release of Half-Life, and I've probably spent more hours of my life in GoldSrc/Source online games than anything else over the last two and a half decades.
Think I played this server. It took 20 minutes to slump the carrier into the antimass spectrometer because people were purposely blocking it.

Unfortunately I joined just as they had almost wrapped up On A Rail. Would've loved to have the whole game recorded. How long would it take 32 people to slip into one hazard suit? Longer than you might think, I'd wager.
Edit: Do you mean the explosive-laden room in Surface Tension? I had to refresh my memory because it wasn't an issue at all, some speedrunner just wiped the floor with that map lol :D

I've been playing in this server for a couple days now. It is a mess when there are more than 15 people playing. There are people who actually want to play, there are people who is... Degenerate, and there are people who doesn't care to play or let anyone else play. The voice chat is also chaotic, there is always someone playing music or loud noises.
Overall is kinda fun sometimes, like the Gonarch fight, everyone using the Gluon gun and the audio of the game being extremely saturated, or the Nihilanth fight. Other times, it isn't fun at all, like the map that you have to take Barney to open the door (Seriously, that map is garbage when there are too many people, in one playthrough we like 1 or 2 hours just in that map. There were so many people killing Barney over and over).
Anyways, good out of 10. I kinda like the server
Somehow we made it through the Barney escort on the first try when I played. I feel like this video possibly contributed to an uptick in trolls..
Then it's a bit like life, sometimes fun, sometimes not fun at all
@@RidgeRacer Maybe. Or maybe depends on what hour you play. I play very late around midnight to 5 a.m. (GMT -3) and complete the playthrough once or twice. There are always people doing a little trolling, specially in the first map of "We got hostiles". If you are ahead of everyone and die, prepare to wait until the doors opens because someone already pressed the button and let everyone trapped, and the buttons have an insane cooldown.
Still, is kinda fun try to finish the map before anyone else.

The 25th anniversary hype has died out a little, sadly. Hopefully when the new bugs are fixed there'll be a tiny little jolt in the playernumber for a little bit. Half-Life multi is one of my favourite things in the world! Needs more players :D
avg player count is still much higher than it was just a month ago though. most shooters wished they had as many players as HL still has

Hardware, 640x480 without texture filtering like Gabe intended. Software was, and still is, somewhat broken on Linux.

It was honestly really fun to play, in the sense that we weren't really actively hindering each others' progress. Everyone had basically agreed that this is hell and we might as well laugh at it together =P

There's a Half-Life Coop mod that just straight up implements completely barebones coop in HL1 with adjusted difficulty, nothing more nothing less. The concept itself is actually pretty nice, I can imagine it's a proper blast with 4 or 8 players max, who just want a dead simple coop experience without setting up Sven Coop.
That being said, I'll always prefer Sven, it's such a great mod.

Just plain Half-Life with this mod: www.moddb.com/mods/hlcoop
For a more in-depth co-op experience with more weapons, more modes, improvements, etc., Sven Co-op is definitely a much better choice, but for a regular plain-old vanilla Half-Life Co-op experience with, say, 3 to 6 other friends, this mod will work just fine!

@@RidgeRacerthere’s 2 servers with the mod one is modified campaign (maps missing and rearranged for it to work better) and the other is old sven coop maps
