I understand your points, but if you use a Ninja V to record (don't record in camera) you can power an S5 all day long via USB C - and record ProRes 422 in the Ninja and have a lovely monitor too. Plus (in the UK) you can buy a mint used S5 for £750 and used Ninja V for £400 - so that's a huge saving over the S5mk2 (£1999). Don't get me wrong, the S5mk2 seems great - but I'm going to wait until a Lumix 60fps no crop is available. I have just bought another S5 for £750 - love the quality of image.
Damn I paid more for the S5 mk1 than £750.. but it was needed in a week and I just 'had' to have it fast to b-cam my S1H rig.. They match SO DAMN WELL!
I have had two S5 cameras, I gave one to my wife and unfortunately hers got damaged by a fall and damaged the dual iso, so I brought a S5ii now awaiting delivery. For me prores is amazing but unnecessary. That said eventually I will buy a ninja v for her camera ( my old one ) and use it on occasion. But Vlog and 6k will be perfect for me. My videos seem to be fairly good on the S5 so looking forward to seeing what the mark 2 can do.
Recently purchased a second hand S5II to add to my existing S5. Came with the ProRes RAW key already activated, so that's awesome! Using it with my Atomos Ninja V. Was surprised to check the specs of the S5II and S5IIX and discover that the 6K Open Gate 3:2 is 200Mbps LongGOP on both cameras. It's not until you get to some of the lower resolutions that the All-I or ProRes HQ recording to SSD becomes available.
Really liked the casual tone of this video, I quite dig this trend of people rambling while doing mundane tasks, but only when it's not too forced 😂Also, which intensity Cinebloom are you using? The low contrast & blooming suit this video pretty nicely, at least to me! As for the camera, I myself am on the S5, but hoping I can snag an S5ii in the used market in a few months... not that I can really justify it as a hobbyist filmmaker ahah. Keep it up, Caleb!
I'm glad i didn't jump on the first generation Full frame cameras from Panasonic because of the contrast base auto focus. I knew at some point Panasonic was going to some type of phase detect auto focus if they wanted to stay competitive. The S5II will be the next camera I will buy once i sell my current gh5s' and g95 and lenses. The lenses though are expensive. Just the equivalent lens, full frame, to the 35-100 2.8 MFT is about three times its price.
Ya but you get a lot more for your money. A 24-70 2.8 On mft would be a 12-35 1.4(in terms of bokeh) that would cost a LOT on m43. Look at the Leica 10-25 1.7
Digging all of the small rig lights on the wheels. Great studio setup. Also, good points re: 4:2:0 and shooting color profiles outside of V-Log; minimizing wear and tear on the computer, etc. I think I automatically default to 4K, 4:2:2 (or now 6K open-gate, 4:2:0) and V-Log on everything, and it's not necessary. It's OK to shoot more 1080. It's ok to not always color-grade for non-client work. Just realizing there's more noise at higher ISOs in V-Log comparatively and maybe I need to consider shooting Standard or Natural in those cases. So many options with the S5ii. Figuring it out shoot by shoot.
You know you can plug the original s5 into a USB C and go all day right. You make it sound like only the S52 can do power delivery. I did a 7 hour shoot this week and never changed the battery once on an s5 or s52 because both were plugged into usb c. Yes you have the stupid 30min 10 bit time limit on the s5. BTW over the 7 hours I had an s5, S52, and Gh6 on the whole time and no overheating or battery swaps. NO they were not recording that whole time, but they were never powered down. Also the regular S5 is a great 10bit camera, in fact its Vlog image is better in most ways. And you can shoot in 10bit 4.2.0 just like on the S52. I just don't know what your talking about at all as far as the S52 having better image quality. ( except potentially 6k and open gate modes) Just that 30min limit that can be frustrating. Watched the whole video and I almost have to wonder if your trolling man... Basically everything you said is just not truthful. S5 mark 1 CAN DO USB POWER. S5 1 can do wonderful 10 bit in the same modes you say you love so much about the S52. I just don't know why you would release something like this that is so wrong. You should seriously consider pulling this video down, because it makes you look like a bad source of info. Totally sorry to be so harsh but the whole video is just wrong. If you said you were going to switch to the S52 because of AF, IBIS, and real time lut feature... ok. But the reasons you mention are just not true.
I don't have the S5 but I have the S1 and the S5II. I think the S1 has more or less the same quality than the S5, however The S5II is not as good about video image quality, the modes that aren't VLOG are very bad, they have more in camera sharpening to hide the lack of details, image looks like upscaled in low light. VLOG profile is better but still worse than the S1 and S5. IBIS and AF are better yes but for me image quality is the most important point.
I only tried out the S5 mark II in a shop, taking a short footage in 6K VLOG at ISO 640 and I was negatively surprised to see noise in shadows. It remembered me my previous mft cameras that also had noise at basic ISO. I don’t see any noise on my S5 . I’m not going to switch to S5m2, also because I’m mainly for stills where the S5 has better image quality (sharper, better DR, less noise)!
S5, S1 and S1h all have better image quality than the S52. Even in vlog. The s52 is a noticeable downgrade when it comes to image quality. Panasonic did warn us this would happen.
@@jessecumberledge4530 Yes and it's really disappointing, my S5 has better image quality with most profiles, V-log is good though but maybe slightly less good than before I made some videos about this. But I think still S5ii over S5 org is a big improvement.
I just shot my first interview with the S5ii as my A cam and GH5 and GH5s as B and C cams. I recorded VLOG to a ninja and am really liking the footage so far. I used the USB power input to keep recording without worry but it seems my Ninja stopped recording right around the 30 minute mark. Not sure if there's a power setting that I need to adjust on the ninja but at least I have the other cams to fall back on.
For the record, I was too fearful to turn on AF on the S5ii coming from years of GH5 experience. I love the AF when I'm able to constantly monitor, but when acting as the interviewer I keep on MF.
@@jessecumberledge4530 Thanks, I'm going to do some more testing to see if I can replicate the issue so I have some concrete evidence to send to support.
I got the s5ii instead of waiting for the x. So the SSD option is really nice but the s5ii can hot swap the sd memory cards. So with how ever you plan to power the camera for hours you can literally hot swap you as cards and get endless recordings just the same.
Especially if you setup the camera to record to one card and fall over to the other when full, replace SD Card 1 while recording on SD card 2. Plus the price for high capacity V60 (v90's no extra benefit on S5II) has dropped significantly.
Video starts at 1:38... unless you wanna see him repeat the same question before going into this montage where he's cleaning up his stuff and it's obvious that he has a camera set or physically holding a camera as he attempts to pack down with one hand 😅 it was honestly a whole segment he could have removed to make the video smaller in length
S5 is 8bit centric? I've never shot anything but 10 bit on this camera, and I always use v-log, and the image is the best I've ever had on any camera. And I often power it via USB type-c. I only shoot with vintage lenses and anamorphic, so I don't really care about autofocus, but to me, the big downside to the S5 is the 4K recording limit, and no optical low pass filter. Using the lenses that I use, I've only seen moire twice in the 2 years that I've used this camera, but it's still a pain to even have to think about it. Although with an olpf, there's still no guarantee. But I am looking at getting an s1h. (I probably won't even get it) lol. Because I think the S5 is one of the most underrated cameras on the market, especially since you can get it for like $800 or $900 used now. :-) which is astounding. Great video as always, love your channel.
I also have an S5, what I think is different that Caleb didn't explain as well is that you don't need a battery in the S5II while on USB-C power, where as on the S5 I always had to have a battery installed to operate.
I just go from 2 GH5 to 2 S5 (Version I), because of the extreme value. I get two of them for the price of one S5 II. Another option could be to go on 2 S1 (+Vlog). Here you got a good EVF and longer (+30 Min) 10 Bit recordings. But you have one SD-Card-Slot and shorter Battery life. Right now the S5 is perfect for me. Maybe i switch when Panasonic offers 4K 60 without crop and some more options. This i don´t like on the S5 II. We will see...
