Back in the 90's my friends and I used to use paint pens.....we would have full on art work on our griptape.

The tape wasn't down all the way towards the end, which is why it faded. Plus spray paint will just chip off after a while of use unless the board is just for decoration. :)

For anybody thinking of trying this for themselves, be careful to not put too thick of a layer of paint on as you will lose some of your grip if the paint layer is too thick.

@@vaocl well he doesn't customize griptape very well 🤷♂️ The proper way would've been to cut out the pieces of grip that was gonna get painted then apply clear griptape on afterwards. He would've had the looks and still had effective grip. But because I'm not a di*k I'll edit my comment.
My board has a completely bare spot where my right foot lives and shuffles around. My shoe grips bare laminated bamboo just fine. Something still usable with minimal effort is not “ruined”

how exactly would spray paint ruin it? is there a chemical reaction that physically destroys it, or are you just assuming a bit of glossy paint will stop rubber shoe soles from sticking to sandpaper? even if the yellow parts were useless, the amount of untouched grip tape is plenty. and after a bit of use the top part of paint will likely wear away. i do not see how this ruins it. even if it did, $5 for new grip..

Surprisingly it still grips pretty well. I did something similar a few years back, I think as long as you're not too heavy handed with the paint it's fine

Go longways with long strokes and an even distance, it saves paint and creates a more even later. You also can try going against the grain by going longways down the board to help stop the blurry edges from the paint getting in under the tape.

When using painters tape on the rough surface. It's good to have a wet sponge handy.
Rubbing the sponge along the edges of the painters tape allows for crisper cleaner lines...

From experience, I’d suggest just spritzing a thin layer of paint , because acrylic especially as thick as you put it down, will fill in the grip sand and make it slippery esp when a little wet

You should try applying different colors lightly, with the layer coats closer to the points. Could get get a cool gradient effect.

Yeah spray paint sucks but those acrylic paint pens are amazing at staying on. I draw little designs on mine with those pens all the time and they never come off at all
