    Glad you liked Sunny. Another one of these lesser-known, short series that you'd really enjoy is Children of the Sea by Daisuke Igarashi. It's a 5 volume series and just like Sunny, the protagonists are kids and the artwork is unique and stunningly beautiful. It's a slow paced mystery that revolves around sea life and marine biology. Quite underrated.
    Memories of Emanon (the first volume of this 3 volume series just got published in English) and Wandering Island by Kenji Surata are two other underrated series that I also recommend.

    The Groke will always send shivers down my spine. Moomin Valley was more horror for me than... well, Black Hole, for example.
    But as a grown-up I'd like to revisit it, though, like with Pippi Longstocking and other franchises, I don't wanna spoil the childhood experiences, if you get my meaning.

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  3 года назад

      Yes, returning to a childhood favourite is always fraught with the danger of ruining a perfect memory. There are dozens of examples I have where it was a disappointing return for me, and I ended up thinking "why did I love this so much?' or 'What a shame this isn't as good as I remember'.
      While I only read Moomin (and only what's in this book) as an adult, I get the feeling that in this case, however, you may not be disappointed 😁

Although mine doesn't have that slipcase, I too got the Deluxe Edition when I found it on sale and was really excited to read the whole series (I had only read one story, which I had quite enjoyed). I was disappointed with the bright-and-modern colours and shading, which (in my opinion) robbed the comic of al lot of its retro charm. I sought out as many of those original Comico issues as I could.

    Nice selection. Got really interested in Sunny, published by.... (?). I wonder if there's a kind of omnibus with all the volumes, or it will be in a near future. James Sturm is an old acquaintence since "Cereal Killings" series, wich was not republished in TPB or any other format (unfortunately). It was also his the first foray with anthropomorphic characters. Strangely this last work "Off Season" doesn't appeal to me. Maybe it's the colour. On the other hand, that little book is kind of neat. I will definitely seek that one! The Spanish Fever is great, because there is so much talent and an active comic scene in Spain with plenty of interesting stuff. Personally my all great spanish author is Max, who's work is also included in this anthology. Worth checking it out!!!

      Eduardo Carvalho Thank you, I’ll definitely be following that guidance! And do give Off Season a shot. Not only is it a nifty little edition (i do like the format!) but it’s also a well told, achy sort of story. The colours work to create an overcast, melancholic coolness to a ‘cooling off’ relationship story, much like the warm colours in some of his other books evokes nostalgia. I wonder if I can get my hands on the other Saturn book you mention. I’m trying to get a copy of Unstable Molecules now - Sturm doing the Fantastic Four is something I’m dying of curiosity to read! 😀

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  5 лет назад

      Ah how conflicted I am! On one hand, they would be lovely books. On the other, I’ve already gotten into the paperbacks and that’s a huge upgrade. I wonder why they’d bring HCs out after paperbacks though - seems counterintuitive for something being introduced to wider audiences, doesn’t it?

    • @Emma-R
      @Emma-R 5 лет назад +1

      For the Love of Comics Well, the hardcovers were going to be 2 in 1, and also larger, maybe original art size. And I also read something about them being black & white. Maybe they want people to double dip. Maybe they can only work on one format at a time. You never know about the rationale behind these decisions.
      But yeah, my wallet really hates it when they make a better version of a comic I already bought. Let alone a whole series.

    • @igorfrederico2629

      Here in Brazil we got both formats from two different publishers, 6 in paperback and 3 in hardcover. I confess that despite the really carefull publishing work on the hardcover ones, the paperback ones are not bad. So I think is a series that is ok to have in one format or the other.

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  5 лет назад

      @Mar Rastapopoulos I would be really torn if they released hardcovers now! But the paperbacks are also black-and-white. • @ftloc
      @ftloc  5 лет назад +1

      @igor freitas Weren't we just talking about jealousy? Now I am pretty jealous of Brazil for those editions! 😀. I know that Corto Maltese was being published by a different company just before IDW took over the rights, which is why books the first company had just published (Ballad of the Salt Sea was one of them, I believe) were kept by IDW to republish later, since demand would be low with an edition being recently put out there.
