      People should remember than most of the fan made games are never meant to be released to public. They are basically game developers portfolio and reason people do fan games is that that gets the most attention.
      If you try to make a game what is 100% original, then you will have to spend some resources or hope you get lucky that people will notice the game. Make a "fan game" based on beloved series, the internet will do all the marketing for you.
      If people actually wanted to release a fan game (without having the publishers permission), they would do in secret and release it as finished product. Once the game is out, it's out.

      Not really a good comparison there. It was laughable for Ubisoft to try and promote that as an innovative feature because they're a "AAA Company" and that kind of thing is something that, ideally, should be 100% standard for any game worth $60 and not at all revolutionary. This is a completely bootstrapped fangame with an unbelievable amount of care and polish for what it is, so being able to do stuff like actively switch in combat actually is an amazing feat of development in comparison.

    It would have been cool if the sign that appears when you discover something first appears in matoran and then deciphers in English. It would also be nice if we had some sort of elemental abilities, for example Tahu can make a small flame to illuminate a dark area. This is just me giving some suggestions, but from this video I can see that you guys have already considered this and much more. Lugbzurg Assassin’s Creed: Origins did something like that; when you first discover an area it shows up on the middle of the screen where you can’t miss it, and when you return to that area later it just shows up on the bottom left so that it’s out of the way but still visible. I think that’s the best approach.

    List of minor nitpicks:
    -That stock eagle sound on that bird a minute and a half in, should be changed to something more alien sounding, this goes for all the creatures.
    -The environments shown are obviously themed, but I think the occasional use of other colors, and unique set-pieces would make what will likely be a somewhat forgettable area a bit more memorable. This could be done by adding a few destructable charred trees here and there, and some striking rock formations. There could also be a wider variety of different colored rocks such as black and yellow. glassy, reflective Obsidian can be used to make some surfaces look different than others, you could even add destructable black crystals to the environment.
    -The focus and attention to detail on the lighting is fantastic here, but I feel like some of the effects are too overwhelming. For instance, I'd tone down the darken filter on the forest, and make the transition less abrupt, and i'd lower the intensity of the transparent effects on weapon slashes and the bubble-shield.
    -The UI is minimal and functional, but I'd definitely change the font used on minor text (like when talking to NPC's) to a sans-serif font instead of using serif for everything. Preferably a common font that utilizes a lot of circles, like Citrica.
    -button prompt fonts should be structured like so: the button (X) should be bold serif, the action(to pick up) should be bold sans-serif, and the object (kanohi miru) should be normal sans-serif.
    -objects that can be picked-up/interacted with are very difficult to see, making the texture fade to white and back every second or so might make them more noticeable while still keeping them hidden. You could alternatively have the object flash white only when the character is within a few feet or it, or when the prompt to interact with it pops up.
    -the music isn't badly arranged by any means, but the instruments chosen make it sound cheap and uninspired. They should be changed to more unique sounds with maybe a bit more percussion to add to the tribal feel of bionicle as a whole. Think of, say, BOTW's or OOT's instruments. They are very organic and atmospheric, and I think that helps prevent the music from getting grating over time.
    -I didn't want to get into the systems of the game too much because I'm sure you have it all planned out already, but I just want to bring up that the rolling and the dashing abilities that get unlocked in the video look a bit rigid and don't seem to carry momentum or anything. I'm not referring to the animations, but instead the movement. I think looking at and taking a page from warframe's dashing/rolling might be worth the time. Comparing how the two seem to function, and understanding what makes moving around feel so slick in warframe might convince you to tweak how your movement works in your game.

      @ScurrilousSpades 4 года назад +14

      To add onto this a little bit, those jump spots seem like they might be relatively easy to miss if all there is is a button prompt right next to them. Not saying there should be a giant glowing arrow or anything like that of course. To use the example of Warframe again, that game typically has relatively obvious white markings on surfaces meant for the game's parkour abilities. Also Doom 2016 and Eternal have green lights placed near objects that can be jumped to/climbed. Obviously painted rock faces or big lights wouldn't exactly be great for natural environments, but something like a particular kind of vines or fireflies or other things like that might help immensely.

    • @Luka1180
      @Luka1180 4 года назад

      They should only use areas that are canon and then fill in the blanks with things that make sense logically.
      Also, the eagle sound, I'm fairly certain I've heard a similar sound in an offficial BIONICLE thing. I think it fits even. There are some organic animals including organic birds on Aqua Magna (the planetoid Mats Nui was on) I believe.
      Also, BIONICLE should always have a mix musically. So it's not all tribal. But mostly tribal perhaps. :)
      Also, isn't the transparency of the weapon slash because it's a fire sword? I.E. It's heat?

    Overall this is an extremely promising and impressive project. The fact that this was in development for six years gives me the utmost of hope in your team that this will see a release.
    There were a few notes to be made from this gameplay video, hopefully this can provide some useful feedback.
    -The combat looks satisfyingly weighty. The enemies telegraph their attacks just fast enough to warn you of an attack without being too ambiguous or drawn-out.
    -The mask swapping and ability usage during combat looks seamless, which shows potential for some great flowing gameplay. It may not be a bad idea to have a weapon wheel to select your mask from on top of the system you have right now, similar to how the modern DOOM games do it.
    -Feedback in these types of games is very important. While the weight of the combat is definitely there, I feel as though it should be a little more clear as to whether you've hit your enemy or not. A quick suggestion would be to add a strike of sparks and a unique sound effect whenever you make a hit, giving a clear signal as to whether or not your attack connected.
    -While this is a simple work-in-progress demo video, I do hope the side quests end up being properly stimulating and interesting. I would say to not be afraid of branching out to unofficial characters and side-storylines, as well as focusing on making quests more than a simple point A to point B.
    I understand that this is very much an early look at the game, but I thought I would give my initial feedback in hopes that it may help to improve the game as its development forges on.
    Between the reflex-based combat, the faithfulness to the wonderful aesthetic of early Bionicle, and your team's dedication, I have high hopes for this project.

      I would also like to suggest/hope, there will be Controller support for those of us who want to play this game using a controller. @@SedrikGSX I wholly agree with the camera issue. I have some other observations I'd like to share:
      - Wow, that forest is dark. I didn't even see the first enemy you smashed in there. I hope it's brighter when the game actually releases.
      - Aw, it's a shame that jumping is entirely contextual.
      - Doing those zooming jumps and leaps just to get around faster looks rather silly. It also sounds really annoying. Why not just make it part of the sprint/run, as super speed?
      - Why do the mask and disk blend into the environment so much? I would only have noticed the mask because of the sparse surroundings and the monster ambush, and I'd probably have missed the disk entirely as another part of the scenery.
      - Come to think of it, all the areas rather monochromatic in general. I get you're going for the Bionicle elemental colour scheme-red for fire, green for nature, white for snow, and so on and so forth-but I think making areas with more than one shade of colour to them would be nice. I hope this doesn't repeat in the other areas.
      - I like the combat music but those scorpion enemies seem annoyingly tanky.
      - I can see the game's wearing its 'Dark Souls' inspiration on its sleeve from the camera, the environmental spacing, the ' Discovered' titles, the combat, the UI, and everything else. That's absolutely fine, since From Software's games are incredibly well designed; it's far from lazy to put on their shoes. That said, I do hope there are difficulty levels in this.
      Although, I must stress that this is an AMAZING piece of work from a fan project. 'Dark Souls' is an incredibly ambitious title to emulate, far from anything I'd expect of an indie studio to try to step up to, and you've done an amazing job from the start. Having said that, the strength of 'Dark Souls' is in its environmental-centric story design, its levels built around linear progression while being open enough for rewarding diligent exploration, and satisfying combat (quick and bulldust deaths notwithstanding); it's built on the little touches, so a tiny attention to detail will go a long way. I look forward to seeing how this goes.

      I agree with everything on this list here. Another addition could be with the effects on screen. There is a lot of them all at once seemingly, perhaps having a little less wouldn't be a bad idea. It was a little disorienting watching, even without the amazing cartwheels and somersaults. X'D

    Judjing by the looks, is it made with UE4? Unity 3D? Also, are there any details on the platforms supported and minimum requirements? I would love to play this on my linux installation.
    Edit: stop speculating about engines used by big game studios. Those are private pieces of software which the only way of obtainig are with the permission of the parent company, or by reverse-engening it from an existing game (a very complicated task even expert hackers would find difficult and time consuming with obfuscation and such, not to mention the company will instantly sue them).
    Gameplay mechanics are not indicative of the underlaying engine, since an engine is responsable only for graphics, audio, I/O, networking and interfacing with the OS. The game logic that defines the game resides on scripts which are loaded on the top of the engine.
    This game is either made with a 3party engine (Unity3D, UE, Godot, Lumberyard, Ungine or many others) or a Game Framework (Ork, MonoGame, Dagon, Piston, JavaFX or others)

    -some sort of map world be great for exploration
    -some effects like that of the original mask are really disorienting, maybe some sort of opacity decrease for at least that ability
    -and if you're planning on making any more changes to combat, a leveling system and maybe a combo system ties to it would be cool to see

  • @Lugbzurg
    @Lugbzurg 4 года назад +1

    This holds so much promise... I love it!
    *A few touches I'd recommend...*
    5:05 I can't even see whatever it is Tahu is fighting. I'd definitely recommend either a bit more brightness or something that'll make the enemies easier to see, like eyes emitting light or glowing projectiles. Look at something like Doom 3. That's a game with a big focus on lights within shadows. (And shooting demons, but I'll stick to what's relevant.) While the game itself tends to be so dark that you need a flashlight, enemies there tend to have glowing eyes or projectiles that make it so you can still make out their position in the darkness, even if you can't see them clearly. See also: Splinter Cell, and how there's bright green visible on the front and back of your protagonist that makes it so you can still comprehend your positioning while submerged in complete darkness.
    3:06 (Hey, I have that sound effect! Well, without those first two beats, anyway...) When you discover new areas... what if the text were to first appear in the Bionicle written language, then transition into English text? Then, when you revisit any place you've already been to before, the name will appear again in English. You probably wouldn't even need to use the word "Discovered" in these text splashes at all. The translation of the "Bionicle Alphabet" onscreen would be a much more unique way to indicate it! The text should probably be a bit bigger, too.
    1:05 What if while your mask was recharging, it appears gray in the bottom-left corner of the screen, but once it's ready to be used again, it turns red? (Green for Lewa, blue for Gali, etc.)
    7:08 I love that you have the mask actually physically in the ground, rather than floating around, but there should definitely be something indicating that it's an item you can acquire, rather than just part of the background. I guess what comes to mind for me is something like Wolfenstein: The New Order, how weapons, armor, health, and ammo in that game give off this reflective sheen of light that repeatedly swipes across the object. But there's various effects you could use. If that seems like a bit much, perhaps there could be a small twinkle of light that keeps emitting off the mask.
    3:22 I'd suggest formatting the text a bit. Like "X to talk Jaller" sounds a bit off to say out loud. What if... "X to speak with Jaller"? Maybe have the character's name appear in bold text and/or another color to highlight significance. Perhaps the same with when talking to NPCs begins. The character's name should perhaps be in bold text or anything to keep it from blending in too much with the speech text. I noticed that "Jaller" and "Click to Continue" are a bit off-center with each other. I'd suggest either making sure they're properly centered, or perhaps putting the NPC's name off to the left. I'd also recommend increasing the font size. Just because we have HD, and technically can make tiny text, that doesn't necessarily mean people wanna strain their eyes reading it.
    7:38 With one or two masks, quick-swapping will work just fine. Three is kind of pushing it. Once you get to 4-6, as intended, your "inventory" may start to become cluttered, as it starts taking you longer and longer to swap between masks, the more you gather them. A few recommendations I might make to alleviate this. *1.* A mask wheel. Think of the weapon wheels in games like the Ratchet & Clank series or the recent Doom games. Hold down the "Mask Wheel" button, and the game moves in slow-motion (or pauses altogether) as you select your mask from the wheel. And when you quickly tap the "Mask Wheel" button, it'll swap you back to whatever the last mask was you used. This would be a quick way to instantly swap between any two masks at the press of a button without slowing down the action. Plus, the two masks in question can always be changed by simply picking another mask in the wheel. *2.* Swap between masks using the scroll wheel on your mouse. *3.* Have numbered hotkeys, like in various shooters on PC. Press the *1-6* buttons on your keyboard to equip the corresponding mask.
    *Oh, and one weird little nitpick in general...* Tahu's fingers... claws... whatever they are... on his left hand. From the Lego pieces they're built from, it just looks odd for them to be bent like human fingers. I think it might look a little better if those two rods bent in a more round and smooth way, rather than at a sharp angle. I know, weird to mention, but it just really bugged me, looking at his gauntlet. It doesn't make much sense for the prongs to be bent so sharply like that!

    This looks great and I'm excited to see what comes next! Most of it is looking really good, but I do have a couple suggestions.
    1) Combat looks pretty solid, but I feel like it may benefit from some sort of lock on to enemy feature. During gameplay it felt like a few of your hits weren't connecting because the arc of the attack would go right over a Nui Jaga.
    2) This might sound a bit amateurish of me to say, since I'm not a graphic designer, but I feel like it would be good to up the contrast of intractable elements against the background. I didn't even see the disk until you'd already picked it up, and I didn't notice the mask until you pointed out there was one there. Obviously you shouldn't make them easily found, but I feel that you shouldn't have to be fighting the environment on it. (Of course this may just be the ashy nature of Ta Wahi so)
    3) It felt like the Matoran models were a bit small. It may have just been the angle of the camera, but they should (if judging by sets alone) come up to just above the knee, not just below it.
    I also have a couple questions about development, although I understand if you can't answer them yet!
    1) You mentioned theres going to be 6 player coop. Is there going to be one set of masks shared between everyone, or does each player have a set of 6?
    2) Will the Noble masks be in the game? Or will they be supplanted by the perk system?
    3) Will there be a progression system besides the perk system, such as an experience or currency to level mechanic? Or will certain permanent upgrades be unlocked at fixed landmarks?
    All in all I'm excited to see where you guys go with this! Totally subscribing for updates.

      In the FAQs on the discord they mentioned only the original 12 masks will be in the game, so I'm assuming that means we'll also see the Noble Huna, Rau, Mahiki, Komau, Ruru and Matatu

      For number 2, I would suggest doing what Traveler's Tales did with their LEGO gamers. Everything that you can interact with is represented by the use of LEGO pieces, whereas the indestructible environment looks more "natural".

    WOW! Before starting it, my wish was that it would include some nostaligic sound effects from the early Bionicle capsules CDs.
    Some seconds in and I get goosebumps from that shields sound effect! And the bass voice when a new area was discovered. THIS WILL BE THE BEST GAME OF ALL TIME!!!! WOW Thank you guys so much for making this and showing this gameplay!

    This is a dream come true for any one of us that grew up playing the Mata Nui online game. I am very nostalgic for the very first wave of Bionicle, I really loved the unique and mysterious feeling. I think this project managed to capture the serene and mystic feeling very well. I also really appreciate how accurately the LEGO bricks were modeled. Looking forward to seeing more!

    Guys, let's be real. It looks cool and all, but ask yourself, how many fan games do you know of that are still available? This will get a Cease and Desist from Lego without question. What they can do is, instead of copying an already existing IP, just make your own, you can still be inspired by the original.

This looks very cool also, its currently a bit rough, but the gameplay seems good, and there is clearly a lot of care put into this, I have no doubt that this game will eventually be very polished. I will say the walking sound is incredibly irritating.

    Apart from other feedback given about visuals and what have you, I feel like the sound design and animation need some work. For the former, I feel like there need a to be more emphasis on the ambient sounds to sell the immersion. I also couldn't hear any footsteps, and the constant repetition of the movement sound for Tahu gets a bit grating. The attacks look flashy but I I don't really feel the impact of them on the enemies. It feels a bit floaty, if that makes sense. Like you're hitting thin air. A more impactful sound on attack hits and heavier animations would do wonders to make the game feel good to play.

    • @ericschuller908
      @ericschuller908 4 года назад

      For more impact, I would recommend taking some heavy steel and hitting it with a crow bar that's been sharpened on the edge. These creatures are supposed to be made of metal, so the sound of a large, sharp object hitting a dense chunk of metal would probably produce the desired sound. And it should be done with the impacted object on a variety of surfaces, such as gravel, concrete, mud, and ice. Though it's highly unlike to have a budget for that. Maybe mixing in impact sounds with terrain noises from existing assets would do the trick on a budget.

    Will this be based on the classic lore?
    The Matoran look a little small. I remember them being about 2/3 the size of the original Toa
    Will there be voice acting?
    Looks like you can do some incredible things once you master the dodge mechanics. Will there be higher difficulties for players who get that good?

      The matoran of Mata Nui were shorter for a time before getting rebuild because of their time in the spheres, I think that's why they're so small then

    The game looks pretty damn good, but I have a few constructive criticisms (that I'm sure will be ironed out in time).
    - Some sound effects rubs off on you easily. Especially the walking sounds.
    - Combat looks a bit confusing with so many blurs and effects that makes it hard to see what's going on. That big flame strike is the biggest sinner here.
    - Enemies are hard to see at times. A solution could be to have markers above them or maybe more aggressive features (glowing eyes etc.).
    - I'm sure you have considered a camera lock-on in the past, but what about a focus/enemy-lock instead? One enemy can be highlighted with an outline (maybe a slight DoF) or something that makes combat easier, without affecting the camera.
    - While the mask in the corner looks nice, I believe it would feel much neater with a simple cartoon-ish icon instead of a realistic 3D render. It would probably look better when it tints yellow as well.

    • @Luka1180
      @Luka1180 4 года назад

      Bruh. The walking sound is perfect in personal opinion. I think it was taken from official BIONICLE material. I hope they let it stay.
      Also, combat need to be disorienting, I think. To some degree. Elemental powers are raw forces of nature that are hard to control, but the Toa have a lot of control over them so it should be fast and wild and raw when using them in combat.

    • @XDLugia
      @XDLugia 4 года назад

      @@Luka1180 The walking sounds are nice, but they are incredibly repetitive. They sound great the first 10 seconds, then they get sort of annoying.
      I see your point about the combat, but this is a game after all. Gameplay is the single most important thing in a video game, so it should be fun and feel good.

    • @Luka1180
      @Luka1180 3 года назад

      @@XDLugia Canon over gameplay in my mind. ;P Well, to some degree. A lot of degree. A ton. So it should be wild and chaotic in my mind. Versatile too.

    • @XDLugia
      @XDLugia 3 года назад

      @@Luka1180 Once again, I do see your point. Trust me, I'm a big Star Wars fan and there are several things about the games that I find a bit frustrating. However, video game logic is indeed a thing and some things need to be sacrificed sometimes for the game to be fun av replayable.
      If I can't progress a game because I can't see what's going on, then I might just give up on it after a while because it doesn't feel rewarding.

    This game looks super promising, and the fact you have been working on it for six years really gives me hopes it will be great. Some quick notes though that I think can be helpful:
    -I think a lock-on system can be helpful for the combat, or something similar
    -I don't know how it feel playing, so I might be misguided, but from the video I don't when you successfully hit enemies sometimes
    -A visual cue to know which walls are "jumpable" could be implemented

    Considering your alpha playtest looks considerably better than some A-list titles already, this is going to be intimidatingly good once it's done. The model rigging is really fluid and the smoke and particle effects add to the volcanic feel without being distracting, and the little sound additions like the lava bubbles and the gears squeaking when characters run are well-thought-out touches. I did notice the distortion on the screen during combat and I'm no sure if that was intentional, and a auto lock-on feature might make enemy encounters easier, but you guys have definitely nailed that feeling of immersive environment with Ta-Wahi.
