  • The 2020 US election made me think, what makes a good president or leader?
I thought what better way than to learn from ancient Chinese emperors who ruled China for thousands of years and see what worked and what did not?
I looked into ancient Chinese books and found 10 qualities a great emperor must possess. So let’s see if they can also apply to our modern day.

Our great ancestors left us the wisdoms, including how to recognize between good and bad, righteousness and evil, expecially today, our heritage becomes even more important to guide us a right direction.

      1.Expensive and beautiful(100$~500$): 明华堂,汉客丝路,吉庐,衿娥,鱼汤传统服饰,丝绦麻履,明裔汉服,控弦司
      2.Medium and beautiful(about 50$):兰若庭,商邑武备,春下汉服
You can search these shop names on google or taobao, and most of them can only be bought on taobao(Chinese E-Bay). 明华堂 has its website but it only has Chinese language version. You can ask your friends about how to buy clothes on taobao
And you can get to know different forms of Ming dynasty hanfu by watching this video,:

It’s lovely to hear from you again, and a brave subject - I hope people are being respectful. The final trait, being good, honourable, is an interesting one which I do agree with in principle but think that more than any other trait is useless without the others - she/he will continue being lovely while the world around them crumbles. Yet sometimes a person who is not so honourable - and one can make a good argument to suggest Winston Churchill was such a person - may be just what the country needs in the moment. Just a hastily written out thought I may disagree with myself in ten minutes time 😁

great video on righteous emperors! sadly its true that back when i was smaller and chinese/hongkong dramas always depict emperors being petty and executing ppl by whim and always fooling around with women or even playing truant from their duties. ppl liked to focus on the privileges but not the responsibility and education they had to take in order to govern the country. they do show some parts but not all of what makes a great emperor.

An important distinction between the divine right of kings and the Mandate of Heaven is that the divine right of kings was irrevocable; it was formulated as an argument against rebellion. The Mandate of Heaven doctrine held that a tyrannical monarch could and should be overthrown; it originated as a justification for the Zhou's overthrow of the Shang.

Therefore, the West accepted capitalism based on its own cultural foundation, while China accepted communism according to Confucius's words, "Do not worry about scarcity, but rather about uneven distribution." Now that Western news demonizes Chinese behavior, goodness will be reward with good, and evil with evil.

1: I don't think we should have rulers that think they are literally granted the right to rule by the Sky. Humility is good, but superstition is not a good way to rule a country.
2: Loving the people sounds quite good.
3: Mostly good, but just because a person acts goodly in their private life, doesn't mean that they are necessarily an effective leader. Also, when rulers wear plain clothes, there can still exist a disbalance of power. Rulers can use their clothes as a way to hide their massive wealth.

"The Master (Confucius) said: A person who can bring new warmth to the old while understanding the new is worthy to take as a teacher"
      Analects, Book 2, Chapter 11
First of all, we need to contextualize these political ideas and teachings in their specific cultural and historical context. Once we have done this, we can clean them from the aspects that can not be universalized and maintain those which are worthy to be maintained. Once we have done this, we can proceed in re-formulating the teachings to adapt and translate them to our current situation and our specific cultural mindset:
      1) the Mandate of Heaven is similar but not equal to its Western counterpart. Religious and superstitious elements apart, it was practically a mandate by people, because it was the people who ideally dethronized an unworthy Emperor through spontanous riots or guided rebellions, thus fulfilling the will of Heaven. Nowadays we in the West live in a democratic system and basically do the same to our leaders without the need of violent and chaotic actions and it is way more effective because in the past not always the monarch paid for his/her bad actions or refrained him/herself from doing them. Our leaders have a comparable fear of losing their power, even though we do not justify it in religious terms.
      2) loving the people for a leader is an essential requirement indeed, but at that time it was intended in paternalistic terms. People was a quasi-undifferentiated mass of uncultured farmers who were considered by intellectuals and elites not able to judge and decide wisely for themselves but only to demand from the elites basic and simple needs; they were like children who needed a father/mother=the emperor (the virtue of common people is like the grasses: when the wind blows over the grasses, they will surely bend.” cit. Analects, again). In our context there is not such strong difference between classes in terms of possibilities of employment and education, so we can intend "loving the people" more as "respecting every citizen and caring about the specific needs of every cathegory of citizens" in a less a-symmetric and less strictly top-down relationship.
      3) in Chinese traditional culture the Emperor was not the exact equivalent of our current presidents: the imperial power was intended more as "maintaining harmony and social order in the country" than "creating and implementing specific policies" because there was a general traditional belief that if the ruler is a moral person and performs all the social rituals correctly (in cerimonies and everyday life) the society automatically follows that same virtuous behavior and is able to regulate itself autonomously so that ideally everyone can prosper according to his/her own role in the system. It seems a paradox but Chinese empire was more "liberal" than modern totalitarian and socialist states. Obviously, in practice the elites had to deal with concrete problems, but the more specific tasks were entrusted by the emperor to his ministers while the emperor had primarly (though not exclusively) an extremely serious symbolic role. In our modern democratic context, we can recognize that a moral and serious leader is still a very important example for his/her nation. He is like a star for the people, one that makes commoners say "we have someone to trust and there is hope for our country to be a better place" and encourages moral actions in common citizens, this is why we should take this aspect in serious consideration when we go to vote. The fact that modest clothes do not assure that the ruler is good and trustworthy is absolutely true, but it also true that form and aesthetics wants its share and should not be underestimated too much since it implies some mental qualities and has some positive effect on the people.

Thanks for the video! It's always interesting to see how people from the past saw the world.
I can see we're getting a little philosophical over there. Let me share my opinion nobody asked about >:D
    1) If there's only God/Heaven above you, there's nothing above you, as God(s)/Heaven do not exist.
    2) Mother that feed her children is better that one who loves them, but can't feed them. I don't care about what politicans thinks of me as long as they respect my human rights.
    3) As long as what politician thinks what "righteousness" is overlap with my personal definition. For example even today some people think that being gay is morally wrong and it should be penalized - I despise such self-righteousness
    4) Psychology tells us that will is somehow similar to muscle - it can be strenghtened by exercise, but also overworked. Therefore there sould be moderation in that "getting rid of desires".
Moreover, if most of civilians live in furgality, comsuption is decreasing and along with it - sold goods. So economy is not doing so well. We don't want that. :)
    5) As I stated above - it's not always a good thing.
    6) Virtuous people are not always smart, smart/talented people are not always virtuous. Actually, I do believe that most talented people are the most hungry for success, money, power, praise etc. as their talent comes from hard work, and that is what fuels their perseverance. Good politican will know how to use that hunger.
    7) Accepting good advice is fine, but advice is not always good. But yeah, taking criticism is cruicial in any field, not only politics.
    8) Law can't be changed too frequently for people not to be confused, but it has to be changed, othervise it'll be quickly outdated.
    9) Expecting the lion to not eat you because you don't attack it is naive.
