    B. B. King: When he came to the Goodwill Revue, a yearly benefit for needy black kids sponsored by WDIA, he did himself proud. The Goodwill Revues were important. The entire black community turned out....When Elvis appeared that year, he was already a big, big star. Remember, this was the fifties, so for a young white boy to show up at an all-black function took guts. I believe he was showing his roots. After the show he made a point of posing for pictures with me, treating me like royalty.

The real "Black" entertainers loved Elvis as Elvis loved them. Elvis grew up in the ghetto of Mississippi and for most of his childhood in Memphis until around 1955. Elvis actually knocked down the black and white barriers and made it okay to enjoy rythym and blues music. Long live the King.

I ran across a channel on cable airing "This is Elvis". You know..I never gave much thought to the "rumor" regarding the derogatory and narrow minded remark that was , what I think , erroneously attributed to Elvis. I liked his movies. In watching his interviews his charm was apparent. For the first time, though, I see how handsome he was. He had a pretty smile. I can say that now after researching a bit , seeing this special and seeing/hearing what Black entertainers favorably said about him.

He said he'd never let a black man shine his shoes (and they usually cut it off right there but he kept going) - he said never let them shine his shoes because he saw firsthand what black Americans in the south went through during that era and basically having a black man shine his shoes would make him a part of that. He didn't want it. Elvis was one of those rare humans who really don't care what color anybody is - he just wanna play his music and have them enjoy it. Sleep in peace Elvis.

    B. B. King: I remember Elvis distinctly because he was handsome and quiet and polite to a fault. Spoke with his thick molasses Southern accent and always called me "sir". I liked that. When I went home to Memphis in 1956, Elvis had gone through the roof. He'd switched over from Sun Records to RCA and scored with "Heartbreak Hotel," "Don't Be Cruel," and "Hound Dog." I liked the new stuff, and I liked Elvis. I saw him as a fellow Mississippian. I was impressed by his sincerity.

  • @strandwolf

He'd tell people I was one of his influences. I doubt whether that's true, but I liked hearing Elvis give Memphis credit for his musical upbringing.
I hold no grudges. Elvis didn't steal any music from anyone. He just had his own interpretation of the music he'd grown up on. Same was true for me, the same's true for everyone. I think Elvis had integrity." --B. B. King

Sam served as engineer. A little later, he'd be busy with Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, and Elvis Presley. I saw all of them, but they didn't have much to say. It wasn't anything personal, but I might feel a little chill between them and me. But Elvis was different. He was friendly.

@Dad Man - You have an issue with comprehension? The tag line & video says "This video clip is about Elvis and his relationship with Black Music and African Americans." That's what I addressed.
I wasn't writing an essay about how people treat other people in America & throughout the world. I didn't ignore anything. Many people have been "wronged" in this world. Not just Blacks.
And I wasn't going to write off-topic. There were no lies in my post. The topic was not about "blatant racial violence, economic sabotage, and hatred against black people by white America." It was about Elvis & his relationship with Black Music & African Americans.
Move on to a post that addresses the irritation you have -- maybe you'll get satisfaction there.
And as far as I'm concerned this issue -- true as some of it actually is, is starting to lose momentum since it now gets embellished & blown out of proportion. Lies through omission? What would you like from me a freaking essay on what the post is not about?
Personally? I'd be really pissed off at the Blacks who sold the original blacks as slaves to the shipping companies who came to Africa in the first place. Because the availability of those people was advertised. What did they get paid? Everyone likes to skip over that fact. Those are the people who should be paying restitution to those poor souls.
But you know what? They probably had a better go at in America than staying behind with those deviants in their native country. Few ever returned even when they became "free people."
Lots of questions never asked. Never asked because they wouldn't like the answers. And no, I'm not a racist. But I also don't judge another era, another generation, I wasn't alive when they made their poor decisions. Probably based on their needs. There was no industrial revolution yet. No machines. I have seen pictures taken in the 1800s of "slaves" in the cotton fields but I also saw whites in the fields with them. Who were they? Oops, I guess they didn't delete those pictures yet.
Believe me, 100-200 years from now we're going to be judged by another generation. I'm sure they'll find many things we do today as deplorable.
I'm Italian, Dad Man -- my family never had slaves. So, I'm paying no restitution. Should we address the Christians being thrown to the lions now? How about all the slaves who built the pyramids? America had nothing to do with that. I'm not angry at you.
Think about this small example -- with all the notable, respectable Blacks who knew & admired Elvis, & they're all in that video -- there are still Blacks who think he was a racist. I guess they don't trust the word of their own kind. There were many, many whites who protected Blacks in the days of slavery. Not all of the slave owners were detestable people. But that's what they'd like you to believe.
And back in those days, they had something else seldom brought up: Bonds women. Almost slavery. Girls who were sold (like indentured servants) to farmers etc. If a farmer has children & his wife passed away he needed a mother for his children, cook for him, take care of the house, & school the children. Where else would he meet a woman? There were no nightclubs, dancehalls in the wilderness at that time. He was watched closely by the church. No abuse was tolerated, she didn't have to submit sexually, but she had to marry him. Like it or not. She was sold because her poor family needed the money.
But her rights -- basically similar to slavery. And what color were these people? White. They seldom talk about this group of people.
If you ever watch the film "Rachel & the Stranger," that's what the film was about. I'm not angry at you. But there is more to the story. We -- you and I -- can't judge another era. Bad, cruel & unjust things happen to people all the time -- they still happen. I'm a white American mister -- and I have never treated a Black person, or any person for that matter, with disrespect. So I take exception to your generalized accusation. My German friends are not Nazis. My Native American friends are not Indians.
And I don't hate you for not understanding me.

He didn’t create Rock N Roll. Little Richard, Chuck Berry and other Black artists did. He wasn’t even the first White guy to play Rock N Roll. One of Elvis’s first commercial hits was “Blue Suede Shoes”. Which was written and performed by Carl Perkins. And it was a hit for Carl Perkins before it was for Elvis. Elvis was just the first phenomenally famous Rock and Roll performer.

@@mikemccool7575 No, Chuck Berry was born in 1926. He was 9 years older than Elvis. Chuck Berry was touring in 1955 with the DJ Alan Freed’s sponsored Rock and Roll tour. With other Rock and Roll artists. In 1955, Elvis was in a tour with acts from the Grande Ole Opry. Which is country music. Also Chuck Berry wrote his own songs. He did covers too, but he mostly did original music. Elvis did not write his own music. He publicly stated he wasn’t a song writer. Elvis is known as “the King of Rock and Roll”. Chuck Berry is known as the “Father of Rock and Roll”.

@katrina Olsen I didn’t say he was older than Chuck. Elvis was famous at 19. Chuck was much older. Elvis got signed and first recorded in 1953. Elvis loved Chuck Berry and vice versa. Of course Elvis was influenced by black rock and roll artists, he’d have to be deaf not to. I’m just saying that Elvis had his own hybrid style that was well established by the early-mid 50’s. He wasn’t a rip-off artist. Again, find me another singer who sounds like Elvis. People thought Elvis was black and they thought Chuck Berry was white.

Ya know, each of the greats speaking in this video have a powerful voice, but of all of them, the one with probably the highest credibility (when it comes to his outspokenness over the years regarding humanity and Injustice) is the words that came from #ReverendHerbertBrewster.
Many people focus on just the other artists are singers taking here, but I don't think many people really realize just who Herbert Brewster was, or why his words matter as much as anyone's.
Rev Brewster was not only one of most respected Gospel composers of his era, but he was a powerful voice for Injustice and EXTREMELY outspoken during Civil Rights era.
It really puts into context the stature of people that went to bat for Elvis.
Same thing with Martin Luther King's partner throughout the Civil Rights Movement, Andrew Young speaking up for Elvis... (although Mr. Youngs quote not in this video)
Herbert Brewster was the type of Activist that when other leaders were telling him to calm down, or don't push the racist powers that-be too hard, he'd say "Step out the way and watch this"
    😂 haha.
    I've always loved that dude.
But I don't know if it's fully understood just what it means that a man like Rev. Brewster has spoke up for Elvis dozens of times over the years in many different interviews.
Activist around the country highly respected that man
His voice matters when he says something
Here's more from Reverend Brewster not on video.
A banger quote from Reverend Brewster ... and keep in mind this is coming from Brewster, one of the most highly respected Gospel icons coming from his era.. giving Elvis legitimate props for his singing... as well as for his Humanity
~ "Some of the best Gospel I ever heard anyone sing was when Elvis Presley sang 'Peace In The Valley'. It was evidenced in the rhythm, and there were certain plaintive lines and slurs that were characteristic of early gospel music"
"When this young fellow sang these gospel songs, there was something about it that was most spiritual. Something about it that was most heartwarming and had a meaningfulness. He personalized it and made it his own testimony; and that in itself I think is one of the highest points, in his impact on gospel singing and gospel songs."
"He also made it stick because of his friendliness, his good-heartedness, also his lavish extravagances and giving to people, irrespective of Color, Race or Creed"
"It was a very sad day when that young fellow Elvis passed away. It was as if the clouds themselves opened up and wept"
~ Quotes above from Reverend Herberet W. Brewster (2 seperate Interviews, April 1983, Author James Cosby, and also by authors Neil & Janice Gregory published 1992 )

You all seeing here for your own selves....who and why Elvis was penalized....and even dragged into the army....it is because of his association with black people and their music....so if wasn't for this association.... Elvis wouldn't have never been King....then Michael comes along and he was black, then he too became King.... what i am saying that once you associate with the black culture. It looks like you are becoming a king e.g Bob Marley king of Reggae, Sparrow King of Calypso, Machel montano, king of soca, Tina Tuner Queen of rock n roll, Aretha Franklin, Queen of soul, Mary j Blige, Queen of R n B, and they are all blacks, except for Elvis but he was connected to us this is why he became king, so black people rules the music world....I am not saying this because of racism. because i hate that nonsense....I can never be a racist...but I'm saying we all need each other black and white in this world to share cultures of the races and to get along well..... because we are all God children.

Raymond Charles...very nicely said, I hear & respect your words. Elvis believed in his heart that he had been blessed by God thru the Soul of Black folks. Mary Jenkins, his (black) caretaker, stated this in her book, Elvis used to say to her, "If it wasn't for black people and the Lord, I wouldn't be living today, I would have starved." Of course Elvis was connected to Black folk/culture, that is primarily from where the source of his inspirations and blessings stemmed. He was thankful for all his blessings.

Elvis would probably have been happy to keep singing country ballads and pop songs but he went with it and it was what the world needed at that time .Elvis never wanted to be just a rock n roll singer, he craved other things. But he and rock n roll just grew together in the world. His later albums showed where his heart was.
