So what do you think of the new Fairchild plugin? Do you like any of the other ones better?

Have owned this one for a month, and I like it a lot. Used to work in a place with a vintage 670, so I’m familiar with what the hardware Unfair is modeling.
I use the Ultramarine, and it does the tonal harmonics pretty well (it’s based on convolution IRs of an actual 670 so this isn’t surprising). However, the Ultramarine doesn’t get the character of the comp right. (If you’ve seen the Eric Valentine Unfairchild demo, he talks about the ‘grab’, and that’s what the Ultramarine gets wrong.) It’s a good comp. The Unfairchild plugin is much more accurate when it comes to the compression behavior.
Also use the UAD, and it’s super useful when viewed as a compressor on its own terms (I would still use it for certain things, like a guitar group/bus, to keep them in a different ‘space’ from lead instruments/vocal). But comparing it to the sound of a real 670, it sounds precise, the analog thickness is totally missing from the lows/low mids, and the tone on the highs is a bit less sweet to my ears.
Used to use the Puig, and I haven’t installed it on the last 2 machines. I just think there are better alternatives now.
Have also used the Overloud 670, and that’s an honorable mention. I don’t have it installed currently, but it’s up there with the UAD. I was surprised how good it is, on its own terms, if you’re not comparing it to a vintage 670.

The unfair child does something special with the presence range of a signal, even without considering the analog characteristics it’s modeling. It feels more round and smooth. This version seems perfect for vocals, guitars,, or even mixbus. as to where the other one seems ideal for drums, or more transient information. Due to its more attacky nature, and difference in soundscape. Keep in mind people, this all has to do with even order and odd order harmonics, and what is taking precedence as far as the difference in sound goes.

I love the unfairchild…I’m a big fan of UA but I know exactly what Eric is talking about…I prefer the UA version for some reason ONLY on piano long notes…it does that better than anything….but yes the Unfairchild takes it for the win. Great video, as always!

I like the UAD and how its a little warm/smooth. The unfair is really nice though..I just dont wanna buy another one lol. If i want something pushed to the front I'll usually use a 1176, or the distressor

Unfairchild in acoustic seemed to retain the transient and make it more alive, along with the sheen. On Vocals it pops out of the speaker. More bold and a healthy amount of top. Drums, the kick reminded me of what the Softube Germanium does. A bit of tight deep beef. Thank you.

Yeah it pops ‘forward’. I don’t know any other 670 plugin that gets that right. Used to work in a place with a vintage 670, and that’s something the original did too. The UA sounds too precise and doesn’t ‘pop.’ The Ultramarine gets the tonal ‘christmas’ right, but the actual compression feel isn’t right.

Compression character is quite different.... The others sound more like color boxes inside more generic compression to me. That's a generalization nail sound pretty different. There's some sounds stage differences but the compression on the unfairchild sounds somehow more integrated with the saturation. Unless like... flat somehow?

Don't wanna start an argument on that but thinking that the 'almost no difference' changes quite a bit if you add up the harshness or whatever the 'other' plugins present on my project.
