The trackball was the bane of my existence back in my school days. When the pro mice finally got replaced along with the older eMacs in favor of the newer iMacs in the computer lab this is what we got, I'd use this mouse and it'd be so painful on my finger to the point I'd just rob a normal Logitech mouse from a windows computer and swap it.
On top of that the trackball got so dirty real fast to the point some of them quit working. Didn't help the students would color the trackball in with a pencil, or just flip the mouse upside down and just race the trackball against the table surface.

I got my first Might Mouse when it shipped with an iMac. Brand new, straight from the factory, I didn't hate it. The trackball, due to it's very small size, was a little annoying, but it worked pretty well. At first. Within a few weeks, it started to get very erratic. After a couple of months, it stopped working at all. No amount of cleaning would return it to it's "like new" level of functionality. I suspect the main problem is the very small size of the ball, making it unusually sensitive to even small amounts of dust. Had it been bigger, it might have been at least okay.

My Mac Pro 4.1 also came with the Mighty Mouse, and I immediately stored it in its original box until last year when we moved to Canada when I sold the whole Mac Pro with its keyboard and mouse

I actually used the keyboard but I'm a weirdo who likes Apple's low travel keyboards more than mechanical keyboards. I've never really used any Apple mice with any of the computers I've owned as even with my first computer of my own, a G3 450, I wanted two mice buttons.

@@dmug You aren't weirdo at all, I bought an additional keyboard when I bought that Mac Pro but in English, since the original one came in Spanish since I was living in México but never liked the return key in the Spanish layout (vertical rather than horizontal), I have this keyboard with me in Canada connected to my MacBook Pro M1 Pro that I use every day, the only Apple Mouse that I remember used was the one that came with the Macintosh Classic and Macintosh IIsi, over the years I collected a lot of mice, the one I preserve is the Microsoft Explorer Mouse (blue light instead of red) that has a scrolling wheel with horizontal scrolling by pressing the scroll wheel to the sides, it has back and forward buttons also

I had one of those monstrosities ship with the first apple desk top I ever owned (21 inch imac, probably a 2008 model). The trackball stopped working after a couple of months, and when cleaning it by rolling it over a cloth soaked in alcohol stopped getting it to work I just switched back to my old microsoft optical mouse that I bought sometime around 1999. My next computer was the late 2012 24 inch imac, and it shipped with a small wired keyboard and the first wireless magic trackpad. I used the wireless magic trackpad for probably 7 years or so, but by the end it would drop bluetooth signal periodically driving me nuts. Because it was just a trackpad presumably the same one from a laptop it's function was great but I hate wireless keyboards and mice because they will all eventually at one point not connect and piss you off.
I like apple's last wired keyboard with the number pad. I believe it's the A1243. I used it with the 21 inch imac, the 24 inch imac, and when the space bar stopped working in 2020 I found another one on ebay and used it even with the mac studio I got when it first released. The second one bought on ebay the W key stopped working a year after the Studio arrived and I replaced it with a wired keychron keyboard.
I'm actually less impressed with the backwards compatibility/apple's support of old peripherals. The first time I tried to boot up the studio it would not recognize the A1243. Luckily I had an old keyboard kicking around that predated the 2008 21 inch imac and for whatever the reason it recognized it and I could continue first time set up of the studio.
It would be nice if apple would make a decent mouse, and it would be nice if they'd recognize that not everyone wants to use wireless peripherals.

The Mighty Mouse is interesting, first Apple mouse to have additional features but definitely falls short in many ways. It’s a cool looking mouse that goes well with matching systems from the time, like the iMac, but probably not the best option as your only mouse. I have the wireless version and it’s pretty cool! I’ve only really used it with my PowerBook G4 so far and it works well, it probably feels best when using it alongside old Mac OS. For a late 2000s iMac or similar setup, I wouldn’t mind it, at the very least the wireless one is more convenient for testing or in general if you don’t have the matching Apple keyboard/nearby USB hub. Also didn’t know these had a speaker inside, cool to know!

With the track record for mice as opposed to their trackpads, you would think Johny Ive had a vendetta for mice as it went against his 'minimalist form over function' style. In fact, that may have well been the case. Even the Magic Mouse feels uncomfortable to hold and use for extended periods of time, despite being their best mouse yet. And that is saying a lot.

  • @miguimau

I still have 4 or 5 of these at home. Useful as a backup in case my Magic is out of battery . The freaking tiny ball will always end stuck. Vigorously rubbing it with alcohol luckily will make it work for a brief time.
I carried my own Magic Mouse when I only had a Mighty at work because it was a PITA from every point of view. Horrible ergonomics, I'm with you.
As always, great nature pics. :D

Really enjoyed this. Thanks for taking the hit for us so we aren't tempted to retry this "mouse" every time we find it at that the bottom of a storage container. Now if only you can help with my inability to throw mine in the garbage, even though I'm positive I'll never use it again.

Arrgh I hated the Mighty Mouse. (Bluetooth version for me) In fact, I hate all Apple mice. I really wonder if the people at Apple (Tim Cook and co) actually use their mice. I think they have stocks in the orthopedic therapy industry or something.

Hah! This was my first multibutton mouse, and the source of my first video -- how to disassemble it and clean the dang trackball. I also remember finding some third-party software in 2006 to give the scrolling inertia, which made it behave much more like the magic mouse.

  • @industrialcream

i used this mouse at my 1st secondary school and with my family's 1st imac, which was a 2007 20" one we got new. i hated it right from the start because i used to accidentally activate the squeeze function all the time and the trackball never worked properly.
for some reason, i never thought to change the button functionality in system preferences, but my school and my dad could've blocked editing me from mouse functions on my user account via admin controls. at the time, there were people online who tried fixing the trackball getting stuck by holding the mouse upside down and gently rolling the trackball in all directions on a sheet of printer paper.
eventually, the mighty mouse at home broke. it wouldn't click at all, which now i think meant it was clogged with dust and who knows what else. my dad wound up taking my mum, myself, and my sibling to the apple store to get a new mouse (he incorrectly assumed non-apple peripherals wouldn't work).
after much deliberation, we walked out with the 1st generation magic mouse (which i now own and occassionally still use) and the full size usb magic keyboard.

I use a thumb trackball mouse and it’s fantastic; but the lack of horizontal scroll wheel blows chunks. I really want a scroll ball, but yeah I can think of the cleaning ability (or lack there of) means it’s probably gonna suck after a few days of use.

I actually bought a Mighty Mouse when they first came out as I had an iBook. Loved it up until the trackball stopped working, was only the real downside to them. Also always disabled the side buttons. I still use one now with my 6,1. Maybe it’s just nostalgia. I do use a decent Logitech mouse with my windows machine but all my Mac’s I’ll use an age appropriate Apple mouse with them, including a Magic Mouse with my Mac Studio.

I actually didn't know it had a speaker in it until trying the squeeze and noticing it actually made a feint sound when plugged in. It's not convincing like the taptic feedback on modern macbook trackpads which is outright magical in its ability to make it feel like a "click".

Also, the puck mouse didn’t make any sense, nor did any of the electronics ergonomically in the 90s, early 2000’s. I forgot all about that puck.

I remember reading about carpel tunnel being a scourge of the offices in 90s, and it turned out the bulk of it was just our horrific ergonomics. Apple is many things, I wouldn't say ergonomics is a strong point with them.

    • @dmug
      @dmug  2 месяца назад

Yeah, it works but that's not really a high bar. If you're after an Apple mouse, I'd point to the Magic Mouse as it's much better for a number of reasons: scrolling + gestures, laser instead of LED thus better tracking, longer battery life. Basically, it's the mighty mouse but better in almost every regard.

The Magic Mouse is almost a good mouse as the scrolling is the best of any mouse for creative / office / productivity apps and the gestures are really useful. That said It's bonkers though that they still have it at 125 Hz polling rate and it's recharging requires flipping the mouse over and using damned lightning cable.
f they just made it more comfortable for more users, gave it USBc, and made the innards a bit better, it'd be solid even dare I say, great mouse.
