IFR is serious business. We want to use our planes and having a IFR rating really is a must when owning your own plane. But there are many things we need to think about. Such as you are ALWAYS rustier than you think you are. So, we must practice and train much more than we think. Life can get in the way and the next thing you know it's been three months since we have had actual IMC. Using a small plane for business adds complexity to the job. There are times that we will have to cancel trips. If that is not possible it may not be a good idea to count on the plane. Adding passengers increases the complexity. Are we making the decision to go because it is safe or is it the pressure of having people, who have no idea of the risk, expecting us to get them home. To use a small plane for business we must realize that we must put as much investment in being a pilot as the requirements of the job. I highly recommend ALL the books and videos by Richard Collins. No one has more experience using small planes in actual IMC than him. And no one explains it better. We must invest a great deal of time in weather, IFR rules and regulations, mental factors to lead to positive and negative outcomes, and continual practice and improvement to be ready for the dangers of flying in real weather. There isn't a big margin of safety when flying small planes in real weather so we must be at the top of our game every time we do it.
8D4 represent. Nicely done! I'm still going through IFR training (covid put it on hold). I remember when I was hand-flying in IFR and my instructor was piling tasks and questions on me and he said, "there's going to come a moment when I will ask your name and you will say 'STAND BY!'" He was right. Task/mind saturation. Just invested in a GFC 500 for my Cardinal to make life easier.
Yea! It gets way easier like anything, with practice. I started my IFR training back in 2016 right after I finished my PPL. My first flight with my CFII I was like "STOP TALKING ABOUT YOUR NEW FIRST OFFICER JOB I NEED TO FOCUS.. while wandering 30 +/- heading across the sky". I'm slightly better than that now, but not by much. Haha.
The first few flights have some pucker factor but as you develop your flows and habit patterns you will learn to prioritize the work more efficiently. In 30 or 40 years it will all seem routine.😎
Really cool flight and video man! I recently had my first real IMC experience flying from NY to FL for Sun'n'Fun, and yes... it gets hard! I had an experienced pilot with me, and I can imagine how much harder it is when you're by yourself. I bet you learned a lot and built confidence for the next ones! Enjoy your channel, keep it up! #TeamGrumman
That controller is my fav dude ever. Have heard him a few times on that route. Yea, I think he was... half that interaction was off camera prior to what was shown....

As a new instrument rated pilot flying my 172, this video was great! And you flew into my hometown of Parkersburg! A nice surprise.
I’m always looking for a great challenge on IFR flights and this one I got on for the first time and loved it
I’m really loving this channel! Keep making awesome videos like this one.
Thanks for watching!
Awesome video! Just finished up my IFR training, can't wait to get some more actual experience. Love seeing Devil's Lake from above at 22:12!
Devils lake! That’s for the name. Have flown over a few times but never bothered to look it up.
Another great video! Enjoy watching how you use the Tiger as a business asset.
Really enjoyed this, dude!
Man eating beans and bbq prior to another leg on the flight. Risky.
Beans have pretty good fiber. No problem.
Greaser alert!!! Gonna start using that one lol. Loving the videos man

Matt, I've enjoyed your videos and editing style! Looking forward to the next one - and may your next trip grant you 100% greasers!
Thanks! I think the 100% greaser trip is still pretty far off, but I'm trying. Hah!

Sick video !

At least I didn’t get bumped that hard!
@@thecommercialpilot I guess the clouds decided to give me a passage ritual into IFR flying 😂
Great video 👍
Thanks 👍
Love the video. Also like your scarf around your neck. 👍 The controller seemed like he was a bit short with/miffed at that other pilot.

What's up with that Concord controller ?? Attitude !!
There's one dude that's super friendly. Then that guy.
A leak just a few video minutes after the ramp dude said your plane was well kept!
Ha. Yea. Man even well kept planes are gonna have issues. Things are from the 70’s!
