Hello Andy Crimson [ @AndyCrimson ] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.
I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol "

@@AndyCrimson Hi. I followed your reaction very carefully, I could characterize it in one word as "cerebral". You definitely liked it, but you are still not completely won over. This song is a good example of the stylistic diversity of the composition, as well as the unique vocal versatility of Floor Jansen, considered by many of us as a unique talent in a generation. I hope with all my heart that you will continue to explore Nightwish's music, because at some point that "click" will surely happen and you will become one of us. With this hope, you have a new subscriber in me.

Heavier and more guitar? Romanticide, Yours Is an Empty Hope, Devil and The Deep Dark Ocean for starters. BTW, as others have said, stay with LIVE performances for Nightwish. That’s where they *really* shine and show what they can do - as you saw here.

Emppu is a phenomenal guitarist who can really shred when the song calls for it. There are no egos in this band and they all serve the song in their performances. Nightwish is a very deep rabbit hole, where every song is different with unexpected twists and turns. Virtuoso musicians, a genius songwriter (Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player whom many call the "metal Mozart" is a master of emotion and melody), and the best lead singer alive today (Floor Jansen can sing anything, from operatic highs to full metal growls) - and bassist Marco Hietala is a metal legend and also has an incredible voice (and when he sings harmony with Floor - it is pure gold). Nightwish is one of the best live bands of all time. I've never heard a bad song from them (at least not live with Floor). To get a sample of their diversity I highly recommend any of these live performances, which are some of my personal favorites: (From Wacken 2013): Romanticide, Storytime, Ghost River, Amaranth, Song Of Myself, Last Ride Of The Day, Ever Dream; (From Wembley 2015): 7 Days To The Wolves, Yours Is An Empty Hope, Nemo, Elan, My Walden, While Your Lips Are Still Red, Shudder Before The Beautiful, The Poet And The Pendulum; (From Tampere 2015): Sleeping Sun, The Islander; (From Buenos Aires 2018): I Want My Tears Back, Dead Boys Poem, Devil And The Deep Dark Ocean; (From Tampa): Sahara; (From Hellfest 2022): Tribal, How's The Heart.

Yes, Emppu is often overlooked and under appreciated since we're used to metal being so guitar fronted and flashy on that part. Nightwish makes songs where everyone does what the song needs, no more, no less. I have huge respect for Emppu especially for humbly doing his part year after another like a trusty workhorse.

11:15 Jukka Nevalainen was the first person brought on board after the band formed (the original three were Tuomas (keyboards), Tarja (operatic vocals), and Emppu (guitar)), joining in late 1996. He drummed all the way through to 2014, when he finally disclosed that he had been suffering from horrendous insomnia that was taking its toll on him and was put on medical stanby in the band, replaced by Kai Hahto. In 2019, he finally fully retired from playing, and now works as one of the bands managers and administrators, so he's still around, just not playing. One of the things that made him super popular is that while he is a superbly talented drummer, he also never, EVER sat still during a performance. He was always bouncing around on his drum throne, yelling out with a big roaring face, headbanging as much as he could at parts... he was the freakin energizer bunny of the band, just constantly go-go-go-go when playing. It's kind of a counterpoint to when you see him behind the scenes, where he is literally the most chill guy on the planet 😎

Hi Andy, I don't comment on a lot of videos. But I liked your reaction. I just wanted to agree with the other people commenting. The more you watch Nightwish the more you will get into them. Pretty much every song is a different vibe. That's one thing I love about them. They don't stick to one generic "Nightwish" sound. And Emppu is one of my favorite guitarists because he plays for the song and what's right for the song. He doesn't let his ego make him put these big over the top unnecessary guitar solos in everything. That being said he does put some sick riffs out there in a lot of songs. Buuut anyways again I enjoyed your reaction. If you decide to continue with Nightwish or not. You got a like and subscribe from me 😊

Nightwish Shadow Unit from Estonia reporting in ! 6'1'' Dutch Valkyrie Goddess spotted ! Gabriel Bardac entered !
This is called Symphonic Metal !!!
Floor her name is derived from the Roman Goddess of Spring, Flora.
Floor Jansen is called the Valkyrie Goddess of Metal and Empathy.
Floor Jansen is a soprano, with a range of more than 4 octaves (Eb2 to F6).
She can sing from classical to belting and raspy vocals like screaming and death growls. And she's also a voice coach and teacher to boot. Plus, huge vocal nerd 😉.
Floor Jansen was the singer of the Dutch metal band After Forever from 1997 to early 2009. From 1999 she studied at the Rockacademie in Tilburg, where she graduated in 2003. She studied musical theatre and a year of opera. In addition to her activities at After Forever, she gave singing lessons. She plays guitar, piano and flute. On May 5, 2010, she presented her new band ReVamp, which was disbanded in September 2016.
From 1 October 2012 Jansen replaced Anette Olzon (Second singer of Nightwish after Tarja) as singer of Nightwish during the Imaginaerum World Tour (And she had to learn the setlist in 48h). On October 9, 2013, it was announced that she would be the group's regular new front singer. In 2015, Nightwish released the album Endless Forms Most Beautiful with Jansen as lead singer. Nightwish's second studio album with Jansen as front singer, Human. :II: Nature., was released in April 2020.
And the master of this magic is:
Our Metal Mozart Tuomas Holopainen (founder, leader, keyboardist, songwriter and the main composer for Nightwish)
Tuomas the keyboardist writes about 95% of Nightwish songs, music and lyrics. He also composes the music for the backing track they use. It is recorded in London with musicians from The London Philharmonics. Pip Williams helps with the orchestration. There are two London based choirs too on the backing track, the other one is a children's choir. And of course with a synth you can do a lot.
This was recorded at the 2013 Wacken (pronounced Vahken) Open Air festival in Germany in front of an audience of 82,000 people (one of the largest heavy metal festivals in the world and one of the largest open-air festivals in Germany). The fiery bull head is the symbol of the festival.
We hope, that there is more coming.

A good honest reaction. They have a wide range of styles from heavy to ballad types. Emppu (the lead guitarist) is a very good guitarist but doesn't 'show-off' for the sake of it, they more than likely decided this song didn't need it so it is a basic solo. Marko (the bass guitarist) also sings and is a great singer in his own right. I would suggest their cover of the Pink Floyd song High Hopes as you will see Marko sing and how good Emppu is on lead. Floor also is a very versatile singer and can do almost anything, including growl which always surprises everyone when they first hear her do it.

The song is from the open air concert in wacken 2013 in front of more than 80000 people. Floor Jannsen owned the crowd since the very first moment she opened her mouth. You have to calculate the song started at 1:07:33 in the concert, so imagine the real power of her voice and the overall abilities she has. I Strongly recommend "Storytime" from the same concert as so as "Ever Dream" and (as i guess) the end of the ever dream "Romanticide". Floor Jansen has had a long career before Nightwish with the legendary symphonic metal band After Forever. She had been with After Forever since she was 16 years old. AF broke up in 2009 and she had a severe burnout because of that break up. In late 2012 she was still recovering and was asked by phone (on her sisters wedding!) by Tuomas to join Nightwish immediately as replacement singer for their tour in the USA. She took a plane from her home country The Netherlands to go o this unkown adventure. She had never sung any Nightwish song and didn't know their latest albums. She literally had 48 hours to learn the entire setlist. At the time of the concert you just reacted to at Wacken in 2013 Floor had been with Nightwish only months and still was not their official singer. It was this perfomance that cemented her as the Valkyry Goddes of metal and she captured the hearts of Nightwish fans all around the world.

9:09 Interesting that you said that, because Ghost Love Score has four distinct parts within. The Intro, the "Dreaming" which is the entire 4/4 section up to the symphonic break, the "Awakening/Lament/Anger" that comes after the symphonic break, and the "Yearning" which starts after the verse "Time to never hold our love."
The entire song is based around love and loss of that love, but in a cinematic/storytelling approach, hence why it is a Ghost Love SCORE, as in score for a movie or tv show. The basic premise: The narrative point of view is about dreaming/remembering the greatest love the narrator had, then they wake up to reality where that love has been lost somehow and they are angry about it ("Take me! Cure Me! Kill me! Take me home!"), and then they accept that its gone but yearn for it. Also, if you listen carefully, the backing chorus is repeating the same refrain over and over again: My fall will be for you / My love will be in you / If you be the one to cut me / I will bleed forever
Tuomas Holopainen (the keyboardist, composer, band founder, band leader, the "Metal Mozart") does a lot of very interesting and anti-normal things in his music, which is what sets Nightwish apart from many metal bands, even within the symphonic and gothic metal subgenres. A perfect example is the intro, which constantly switches time signatures from 4/4 to 3/4 to one bar of 6/8 just before the guitars come in to give Jukka (the drummer) enough counts to get the triplets in.
If you enjoy the multiple parts/"acts" in music, two other songs you need to listen to are: The Poet & The Pendulum, which has 5 parts, which is a song that Tuomas wrote after they fired the first singer who was one of Tuomas' best friends and he committed "musical suicide" in it to deal with his emotions; and The Greatest Show On Earth, which is a 23 minute long song (!!!!!!!) that has something like 10 different movements and 4 major parts.
If you want something heavier, Romanticide, Bye Bye Beautiful (another song about Tarja being fired), Scaretale (which has a section about 30 seconds long after Marko does his creepy circus ringleader part that I think is the very definition of Nightwish's style). If you want more fantastical/epic/"dance-y" stuff, then you'll probably love Storytime, Last Ride of the Day, Dark Chest Of Wonders, Seven Days To The Wolves, Endless Forms Most Beautiful, and I Want My Tears Back.
If you want original Nightwish/old school Nightwish, of which Ghost Love Score is one song, then you absolutely need to hear Wishmaster. It is the song in 2000 from the album of the same name that took Nightwish from a Northern European band and exploded them across the metal world. Other good old tracks (some of which Floor has sung at Wacken, Wembley, or Tampere, the three major concert DVDs that a lot of the tracks reactors watch are from) include Dead To The World (Marko's first singing part after joining the band), Ever Dream (the Wacken version is amazing), and if you want to go all the way back to the first albums (Angels Fall First and Oceanborn), Stargazers, Devil & The Deep Dark Ocean, and Sleeping Sun are all great examples of the original sound, and as far as I know, Floor has sung all three live, but if you want the originals, they are out there as studio recordings with Tarja.
Oh, and then there's the End of an Era live performance of Phantom Of The Opera, which is another one of those ultra-popular reaction songs.

    Hello from Nightwish Army Brasil.
The guitarist, all musicians, work for the music. You won't hear long solos and no unnecessary solos. Only what the music demands will be played. Therefore, the highlight is the composition.
There are some songs in which a short guitar solo, a solo by Iullian Pippes, a bit of keyboards and that's it.
The queen of metal is Doro Pesch, the queen of symphonic metal is Tarja and Floor is above them, as she is a divinity. The only man I remember off the top of my head with so many variations of vocal techniques is Thomas Vikströn from the band Therion (inventor of symphonic metal) (the band has several vocalists).
Nightwish has songs in different styles. It ranges from metal mixed with folk, power, ballads, thrash and of course, orchestrations.

To hear Emppu (guitarist) the way you were hoping to, check out the live version of Romanticide, from this same Wacken 2013 show. You’ll enjoy that. One thing to keep in mind about this band…there are no show-offs in it…they all play to what the particular song needs, not to show how good/fast they can play. But yeah…Romanticide will give you what you were looking for guitar-wise.

This song is on the more quiet side of their spectrum. Which is great to introduce Nightwish to people who aren't used to Metal. When you want songs with more of a guitar presence there are many to choose from like already mentioned before by others. This song is also divided in sections, as you noticed, hence the name Ghost Love "Score". It's like a movie score of a dark love story.
Also noteworthy is that most songs that are requested are from live shows (Wacken 2013, Tampere/Wembley 2015/2016 and Buenos Aires 2018), the reason for this being is that they are their best live but also because they've had 3 singers, Floor Jansen being the current one. And these 4 shows are with her and she can handle the entire catalogue of Nightwish. I suspect that soon we can add another live show from last year in Amsterdam (one song is already released from that) where they recorded the show (on two consecutive dates) which is yet to be released. But I would stick to the live recordings unless you want to react to a music video.
A sidenote: If you want to listen to older stuff by the previous singers, then I'd suggest live versions as well for the first singer Tarja. She's entirely classically trained and has an amazing voice, however, I will note that she's not trained in doing pop style vocals and growls, which Floor can do. Floor has had some classical training so she can handle the older songs from Nightwish no problem but she doesn't sing them in quite the same way as Tarja did. She made them her own but when she wants to go classical she can. The middle singer Anette doesn't have any classical training in her background and as such live recordings outside the two albums that were recorded with her really should be avoided. She's got more of a pop/musical voice and as such I haven't seen a single live video with her where she doesn't struggle with the songs that were from the Tarja era. Anyways, my 2 cents

The more songs by Nightwish you hear, the more it becomes clear that every musician in the band plays in service of the songs they create, not for their own ego.
For instance, the guitar solo in this song, i was with you in the beginning when i just discovered the track, but now? not anymore, that solo is actually perfect.
Empu can shred like nobody's business, but that song has no room for a shredders solo, it only has room for a melodic and deliberate solo, which is exactly what he does.
So i am sure if you hear this song a few more times, you'll come to see why that solo is as it is, and that it fulfills it's role within the song, pretty much perfectly.
So yeah, i'm not saying you are wrong at all, but i am saying that when you get to know the music of the band, it becomes clear how they tell their stories in music, and how each member plays their role in that story telling.
And if you want some nice shredding? no problem, they got that too for you hehehe
Recommendations you'll find plenty in the comments here, so i won't bother adding more.
Ty for your lovely and honest reaction, hope to see you dig a bit deeper into this band and see what all the fuzz is about hehehe

I've been immersed in Ghost Love Score reactions for the past four days, and it's disheartening to see how often the focus shifts solely to Floor Jansen's outstanding performance. While Floor is undeniably incredible and captivating, it's crucial to recognize that the brilliance of the song extends beyond her vocal prowess. The composition, arrangement, and the flawless execution by the entire band collectively contribute to the masterpiece that is Ghost Love Score, making Floor's shining moment possible.

Every song is different yet everyone is amazing. They can pull your heart strings or rock your face off even in the same song. Enjoy this rabbit hole. You will not regret it.

The 2013 Wacken show is epic. It was Floor Jansen's first show as the band's official vocalist. Before that, Floor replaced Anette Olzon on the USA tour due to the former vocalist's health problems, in fact, Floor is the band's third vocalist. I recommend you check out other songs from this show like Romanticide, Storytime, Ghost River, Song of Myself, She is My Sin, Nemo, Amaranth... Other important information - bassist Marko Hietala has a magnificent voice and shares vocals with Floor on some songs. The band's first vocalist, Tarja Turunen, is an icon of Symphonic Metal (see The Phantom of the Opera with her and Marko). The "boss" of the band is keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen. Tuomas is the composer of almost all music and is called the Mozart of Metal.

Was it really too much asked to let those last 5 seconds play out? This song is not about the guitar showing off. In fact the guitar part fits the song perfectly. As always, Emppu does not show off, but he always plays exactly the amount of guitar the song needs. Sometimes that is a lot, sometimes not so much. To say that the singer changed her voice a little really does no justice to her capabilities. In fact she shows off quite some vocal acrobatics here. Well, maybe Nightwish isn't for everyone.

Great reaction and interesting analysis. I started listening to Nightwish before this singer joined, in a different era. The band has changed a lot. While the vocals have always been standing out, due to their operatic nature, they get even more focus nowadays, together with the "ambient" sounds, the wall of sound. It used to be a bit more raw and a bit more guitar focused. Emppu can play, when he gets the room, and there are some really great older songs with amazing guitar parts. Check out "Crownless" or "Wayfarer" if you like to hear how they used to be.

This is appropriate as today (6th of December) is Finland's Independence day

Yeah, Jukka really beats those drumheads, and does it very very well.
There are many tracks from the same concert (Wacken 2013) which will be more to you tastes (plus other concerts as well)
For more aggressive vocals, see just about any OTHER Nightwish song.
For more aggressive rhythm guitar, we just about any other Nightwish song.
For more aggressive leads, try Romanticide.
BUT, for the fun of seeing how they opened the show, you might try Dark Chest of Wonders, first.
    ... just a thought.

Good reaction. Keep watching NW and you will certainly find more guitar heavy numbers. And theres a mystery member that you have yet to meet.
Also on a guitar based theme, check out Lovebites or The Warning. Youll probably like both.

For some reason, I'd suggest going immediately into "Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean" next as it is Nightwish at its most bombastic and best matches the energy of the GLS finale.
At the show you just watched, Floor was only with Nightwish for a year, and sang songs written for two completely different vocalists. With the band leader's (Tuomas) permission she modified and embellished them to suit her own style and skills.
Nightwish closed out the entire Wacken 2013 festival with this set in front of 82000 fans.

A big welcome to the Nightwish Universe from Nightwish Army Denmark 🇩🇰
If you decide to dive deeper into this incredible universe of music, you might find that this is composed music with deep poetic lyrics, often in chapters like symphony music.
If you only want to listen to 1 more - I will challenge you to do 'The Greatest Show on Earth' - from Tampere 2015. And you must stay on until the video is completely finished, because the speaking afterwards is an important part of the song !
I don't believe that you have ever experienced anything like this.
To give you a hint - please Google the book by Scientist Richard Dawkins 'The Greatest Show on Earth', and read the description. The song is the book with every thinkable technique used to describe the 4.6 billion years of the Evolution.

"That girl having a moment.....just killed me."
That part gives me goose bumps every time. :)
Re more guitar, (& every thing else) guessing you'll probably go more for, "Ghost River" (Wacken '13) , "Dark Chest of Wonders"(Wacken '13 show opener) "Killing The Dreamer"(esp the 2nd half) & "I Want My Tears Back" , from Buenos Aires , "Romanticide", & "I Wish I Had An Angel" from Wacken '13, , & "The Islander", from Tampere '15 .

I can't believe even the most die hard Nightwish fans still want to see reactions to this. But have fun discovering them, well at least the last ten years, which is all the recommendations will allow if you only follow them.
