3:05 lol, FM being actually PM in so many cases absolutely did my head in when i was a teenager. i heard that looping kick get faster and faster until it was a bass tone in röyksopp's vision one & figured all right, so to replicate that i'll take a saw a few octaves down and feed it into a sine, imagine my disappointment when all i heard was an out-of-tune sine with some little clicks sprinkled in. when you know it's phase modulation going on, it makes sense -- PM is (loosely speaking) equivalent to FM by the *derivative* of the modulator, which, in the case of a perfect digital saw, is a constant. donks aside, if anyone is looking for "proper", intuitive FM results to play with, the free & open source surge has you covered. it's just A into B, but A and B can come from several different engines incl. VA, generic wavetables, or even a baby 3-operator OPL-style setup, so there are weeks worth of sound design sessions to be had from just the FM mode.
that sound is probably hard sync. i doubt it's FM/PM like(it's defo not a looping kick like i've seen a few people claim). the formants don't move as it moves around in pitch and the grind is always the same. there's no way to do that with FM/PM without having some kind of oscillator slaved to another. ok, i guess you can use saw wave carriers, but that pretty much is hard sync and you'll still have the formants move around with the pitch. listen to the part when they start playing the melody later with the same patch. that gives it away that it is hard sync
@@johndozesoph4136 well yeah i found out later the kicks & bass were diff. sounds, but a decade and a half ago "loopy kick hehe" seemed like a sensible enough starting point
In Operator you can adjust the oscilator phase ; so you can not only invert the waveform but also get all the phases in between , can dramatically affect the outcome ...
@@OwenTheGeek yep. not necessary like, but it makes more intuitive sense if you use a saw wave/ ramp as waveform operator used to shift the phase point in the waveform .as it's basically acting like a phase accumulator in modular software like MAX, Reaktor, PD etc
This is a very good and inspiring video! After watching it I decided that I definitely need to make a real Donk Bass, although it is not even my favorite sound. 😆
Great video, you seem to have got your head around FM pretty well, any idea how to achieve this on the KORG Volca FM2, I know it's got a sick donk in there somewhere! 😀
I thought the Volca FM 2 only has sine wave operators? If that's true then I'm sorry but it's not gonna be getting Klubbheads donks... But you'd definitely be able to get close to the initial oldskool FM bass sounds I showed in the video
@OwenTheGeek yeah its the same as the DX7, its got some pretty good presets but want to get into FM much so I figure learning donks and reeses is a good place to start, your videos are great! Keep up the good work
PUT A DONK ON IT!!!!!!!!! I love the shout out to the Plogue Chipsynths, those are awesome! I made demo tracks for both Chipsynth MD and OPS7, such good FM synths
Brilliant. I think they're exceptional in the sense that they feel like real synths, sonically. Most plugin synths just have this boring plugin aesthetic (sonically), but the Chipsynths seem to exude this extra dimension.
@@OwenTheGeek probably because winter here in Montreal makes us want to stay inside at all costs, so David, the developer really takes the time to craft these incredible plugins. I especially love the song player in Chipsynth MD
Hmmm, yeah. I'm sure the winters help. I think there's more going on with David, though. He's a bit of an unusual character. Unmatched dedication to his craft.
You know what you should follow up with! The Tribal Church stab. No Donk track is complete with out some of those super sharp stabs thrown in as a contrast!
I was just thinking that I need some Donk bass in my production and here You are! Thank You YT algorithms ;) PS: wonder if I can make that sound on Digitone?
Woa, you know me well... I did do a Ron Wells style donk, but ended up editing it out cos the video was gonna be 3 hours long and take 9 years to release. 💀💀💀 However, we can always come back to the Basement donk in future. Maybe even tomorrow...

This video answered my question of why FM in one plugin (ex fm8 or serum) sounded different in another plugin even if it appeared you were doing the same thing. Thanks for that

Yeah, FM8 can do that too if you know what you're doing. I just didn't want to overcomplicate the video as I already had a lot to cram in
Every FM Matrix VST can do this if it allows for 0 ratio operators with negative hz offset amounts
