It still helps us to be able to work a left handed pattern, so all good!
I've tried googling the long/large oval on the foreign pattern but everything just says it's a chain. I'm wondering if they made it a larger oval just to fill in the space on the symbol pattern. Like two chains would take up about the same amount of space. Would you mind checking the stitch code chart in your book to be safe and let me know? I have seen where some foreign symbol patterns have different symbols but it's been several years ago that I saw them online.
Thanks so much for this video, it's inspiring! Also, I pray everything is going well with your older son. I'm sorry I have forgotten both their names now, my memory stinks. 🤦🏼‍♀️

It’s ok, what are the odds you would have found a left handed pattern?
It also demonstrates how we lefties have learned to flip or mirror the work in our head.

I was about to say, hi Corinna, this makes sense to me as I am left handed 😂😂
Tbh I normally have to flip most patterns as they are shown as right handed, but this one makes a wee change 🥰🥰🥰

The pattern looks like all the ones my grandma taught me off of and the chain counts as 1 row so all odd number or WS rows were on the left while even or RS is on the right. Thanks for all your videos. I have binge days of the mystery ones. I have seen them all multiple times. When I what the new ones I always cheer when you match the pictures. ❤❤

Love this video!! If I think too hard about a pattern or even the makeup of individual stitches it sorta stretches my brain. One tip for you - if you line your post it note ABOVE the line you are working on, you can still see how it lines up with what you've already done. It's a little thing but I find it very helpful.

I love, love, Love charts! Last Christmas I made all the women in my family some of the Russian textured doilies, strictly from charts. Everyone received at least one snowflake, plus I made my Mom and MIL a larger textured doily in hunter green for their nativity scenes.
There was one stitch, that's pretty common in the Russian charts, that almost broke my brain when I first saw it. It's a horizontal dc with an arched ch3 over the top, usually in between two dcs. I still don't know the name of the stitch, but you work it kind of like you would a picot. After making a dc in a st of the previous round, ch3 then come back to the top of the previous st and work another dc (instead of working a sl or sc like you would with a picot) then make your next dc in the next st of the previous round. Btw, it was really "fun" trying to research that stitch, because all I had, besides the chart symbol, was an abbreviated name in Russian for the stitch. I've also seen this stitch a lot in Japanese chart patterns. Just maybe keep it in mind if you attempt any of their more complex doilies. 🤷‍♀️

This video is great! Very helpful. And thank you for the file of patterns and symbols! Invaluable.
I’m thinking that the “left-hand” version is really only “off” by the first row. Because you’d be reading the lines back and forth either way. 🤷🏻‍♀️

i loved finding these when i first started crocheting cuz it allowed me to know what the pattern was supposed to look like before i started it so if something went wrong along the way i was able to catch myself and know where ( this of course applied to the simpler ones like this, the ones that are a bit more involved not so much). Still enjoy writing these myself for small projects as well like little lace bits or flowers. Really enjoyed the watch thanks for another good vid ^^

The first chain row shows you chain 3sts, then your repeats of 30sts. After your groups of 30 you add 1 additional chain st then you chain 5sts which is 2ch for the dc up and 3 ch.for the first pattern row which will be the 3 dc at the end of the 2nd row.

I love charts. To me they need to be copied and enlarged and written all over, with stich counts and marking where I'm up to. In the 1970s when I started to learn it was before I had access to a photocopier or scanner/printer. I was taught to write out a pattern on graph paper, or in a note book. I still have notebooks and graphs belonging to my Aunt who taught me.

I used these charts very often in the 80s and 90s. It is true they are sometimes a little odd, so it’s a good thing to study it a bit before starting. According to my experience, the 30+1 indicates the 1 is, technically, the end of the row. The +9 is the beginning of the next row. Someone else might have a better answer, but that’s what I work with.

  • @cynthiahowe8697

I don't do the chain 9 for my beginning ch of the next row, if it is an open square, I only add what I need to so I can start with a stacked single in the 2nd ch from hook. Then do the ch2 and sk 2. makes a better square. I think in open squares and closed squares when doing filet crochet. If I want my piece to be square, I do a square of 3 stitches, if I want it wider than tall I will do 4 stitches per square. I love the pineapple as well and it is nice to see both together in one patterns,

  • @peggyashby9224
    @peggyashby9224 8 часов назад

I think of a sheet of graph paper ..
Then each square would be open or closed.
So the 4 dc are a closed square chain 2 dc in 3rd is an open square....
I also say wrap once or twice or three times according to slash marks on t..
I have tons of these patterns ...

  • @procrastiknitter3733

Left or right, every other row will be worked opposite - R-L, L-R. Same thing happens in knitting charts.
Ideal chart would be printed on transparent sheets (like for those old overhead projectors [for those of us who remember them] LOL). Then you could flip it over when you flip the work.
I suppose tablets have some kind of image-flipper if you have the chart on it??? Otherwise you could have a front-view version and a rear view version...this is getting to be more complicated than the actual pattern.

5:28 Your stitch count is off. It should be:
    3 before the repeat, plus
30 for each repeat (so 2 x 30 = 60). The repeat ends with 2 chains. After the 2 chains, you need
1 for the first stitch of row 1 to sit on
3 in lieu of the dc (i.e. the first stitch of row 1
2 for the first 2 chains of row 1
    3 + 60 + 1 + 3 + 2 = 69
If you wanted to do stacked singles it would be 3 + 30 for each repeat + 1, then chain one to start your stacked single. After the stacked single you'd do two chains

How does crocheting into the space look compared to crocheting into the chain on a chart? You said that a person can do either, but I imagine it is important that you follow specific directions on some projects.

    • @BarbaraMarieLouise
      @BarbaraMarieLouise 10 часов назад

To crochet in the space is a rather new idea. In the last century you always crochet into the chain. I had crocheting in school, so we never did it in the spaces.
