I adore this concert aria! And how wonderful to hear Norman sing Mozart' and Italian. This is probably the fastest I've heard her sing.

That's really perceptive, and was pretty much her equipment by 1989. The violist over her left shoulder, BTW, is Manfred Honeck, currently MD in Pittsburgh. Conducted the best Mahler 5 I've heard live in NY a couple years ago.

I now have two versions of this Mozart concert aria that I like, Jessye Norman's and that of Margaret Price.

Have you listened to Victoria de Los Angeles? It's a lovely, tender rendition.

Norman sings this as if it were a lullaby. In many ways this tended to be her approach to the lyric repertoire with a sort of moaned head toned middle and roaring upper middle and a sort of ski jumped top voice. The result was sleepy lioness awoken to fury and then ghosted. Always a very fascinating and unusual approach. Here she doesn’t get fussy with any Italian text she just glides over it all politely and with solemnity to it’s roaring conclusion. In many ways this was her glamour. This mix of moaned lower and middle head tone and upper roaring alternated with lullaby gentleness. And it worked wonders even if it was a bit too sepulchral.

She doesn't moan anything. What a bunch of nonsense!
