A few years ago I had the pleasure of working with Kathleen Battle at Roosevelt Univerisity as a chorister for her Underground railroad concert at the Auditorium Theater. She was highly professional, very meticulous but kind and personable. It was a high point in my career. She is one of my idols.
I had the pleasure of meeting Jessye Norman early in my career when i was still a student. She was at Carl Fischer Music store where she autographed my album. Her presence was regal her voice rich she gave me some advice. She is also one of my idols.

dee lightful I, likewise, had the opportunity to sing with Kathleen Battle when she did her Underground Railroad concert here in Dallas, and I share your sentiments. It was an experience I will never forget and am so grateful to have been a part of. I never got to meet Jessye Norman, but she is still one of my favorite artists.

It’s also the effect of the actual opera composition. It’s so modernist and Art nouveau of it’s time. Stylistically the tonal and atonal blends are strange and yet majestically overwhelming. Most people are catatonic after Ariadne. It’s a very weird show.

I went to school with Battle. She never sang opera then. Her teachers would let her do lied and small things - Mozart mass. No pushing. Everyone appreciates the voice. But she's also a great musician. Levine is jumping all around at the piano - she's with him every sec. and just breezing through these difficult intervals, high notes, etc. One of the great ones.

The joy of Norman and Levine (how I miss them both!) in this notoriously difficult opera. The story I think is brilliant combing the difficulties of musician life, commerce ,demands of art and general audiences etc.!.How wonderful this was filmed . Imagine if we had Astrid Vernay and the older singers in some old tapes .However where there ever singers like Battle and Norman -their training, culture, technique ,musicaliy has never nor will it be bettered . In the film Aria isn't it curious so many directors chose Leontyne for their performers. It seems unlikely that so many from different backgrounds and nations etc. would chose one soprano.Must be another selection story behind that ...

Unless I hear from the very lips of Maestro James Levine, I will NOT believe that Ms.Battle was that difficult to work with. I feel you my friend, I have been clinging to the same idea for my entire life, she was a full colour lady breaking the glass ceiling right after Marian Anderson and she didn’t do it alone, she was killing it with Norman, La Price, Verrett, George Shirley, Bumbry, etc…

I think people forget that Opera singers are human beings not gods. They’ve got imperfections just like the rest of the world. The only difference is that their imperfections are on stage as well as real life.

James discovered Battle, and their relationship is more like "FAMILY MEMBER" , they known each other forever. while him and Jesse are more like people who admire each others work, so they tend to gush over each other more, because they dont work or see each other that oftern

@MusicismyheartXO They are marking in parts. Marking is used to save the voice...some will sing the notes but at almost a whisper...others wll bring everthing into the middle voice...dropping things in the upper register down the octave...bringing low notes up. I don't require any less support though. In my opinion, for some voices it takes more support to mark than it does to sing out.

@minkoss I didnt sense that - if anything I felt that you could see more blatantly the familiarity between Levine and Norman. I feel like maybe Batlle and Levine weren't as close as Norman and Levine - besides that, I feel that the interactions between Battle and Levine were both cordial and lighthearted.
