This video really helped me out. I bought the remote for easy control of the GoPro Hero 8 when I'm on my motorcycle. But getting stressed out because I couldn't find the option to power on/off the camera with the remote. Almost thought the remote was useless lol. With the GoPro Hero 8 the reconnection only takes 2/4 sec. Thanks for this video, really clear explanation!
Excellent review. I've been using GoPro Smart Remotes for 10 years on my Hero 2, 4 and 7. As they were discontinued, I could fortunately get a Telesin that works just as well. I'm keen to sell my H4 and buy a Hero 11 and the new Remote. Other than spare batteries for a GoPro, the remote is the next best invention for action activities.
A great review as always and very informative especially about the delay in powering up the Hero 9 from the remote. A lot of people would think that something has gone wrong with either unit. And as always a BIG thumbs up and keep em' coming and stay safe over there. Cheers Kym
Great review. I just ordered one to use on my motorcycles without actually checking reviews first. All I want is the ability to change modes and stop and start video filming on demand
Oh wow. We use GoPros for filming hunting and fishing. So much can happen in 20 seconds! GoPros take our videos to the next level, but we have had such issues with their reliability which includes remote connection. Hopefully, they figured it out this time. Also really wish we knew beforehand that the Hero 8 black was not entirely compatible with the Smart Remote. Missed a lot of amazing shots this turkey season due to using the wrong remote! Really do not want to spend the extra money on this product but I suppose we have no choice. Ordering now. Thanks for the video.
For the remote to turn the camera on, does the camera have to have it's Quik Capture on, or just the wireless? Does the quick capture work with the remote, if it is enabled?
With the remote connected to the camera, switch the camera off with the remote - as demonstrated in the video. It really doesn't use much battery at all, even in standby, thanks to that low power BT rather then wireless.....
Using two GoPro 1's with this remote and seems whenever I power down the cameras with the remote, I can restart them with the remote but then the remote needs to be re-paired with the cameras for any functionality. What am I doing wrong?
Buyer Beware! I have used mine about 10 times since I bought it about 2 years ago. I went to charge it today and noticed the back of the remote case was about to fall off. On closer inspection the battery had swelled so much it literally popped the back of the case off. The swelling has happened within a week of its last charge. One thing that scares me I have had numerous GoPro batteries start to swell and had to dispose of. Hero4, Hero7 and now the Super Remote for my.Hero9. Time to find another action camera I think GoPro is just throwing things together and not paying attention to quality control.

A question: so this remote can power on the camera? THEN you can start recording? I need to power on the gopro11 and then start the recording. Please help :)
Pair the remote to the camera than switch the camera off using the remote. You can then switch on with the remote after that as the remote remains paired to the GoPro in a low power state.
Very good information. Gopro owner's manual sucks. It doesn't tell you half the functions the remote can do. Especially how to turn the camera on & off using the remote. Thanks for explaining the operations.
2 questions please regarding the remote - 1 is it backwards compatible for hero session or older gopro models and also how do you switch between individual camera control or "all together" on and off etc..
I have a Hero 8 black and remote. On the GoPro I set the QuikCapture on. The GoPro is off, and when pressing the rec button it turns on and starts recording. Pressing it again, stops recording and turns the device off. It is normal. But when pressing the rec button on the remote - when the GoPro is off -it is only turns on the device, but not start the record. I ha e to press it again. And when stop the recording wint the remote, the GoPro stays on. Is is normal?
While using it on the water we have experienced the remote shooting multiple clips over a period of time. Can the length of the clips and setting for this function be controlled somewhere?
