  • In the remote area of Gee’s Bend, Alabama, descendants of enslaved people endured hardship and extreme poverty for generations. The quilts they made from necessity are today recognized as fine art. Their unique designs are even reflected in First Lady Michelle Obama’s official portrait dress.

Love finding our family history on the internet. Info confirms what I know and gives me more questions to ask my elders. It is our responsibility to keep the legacy alive. Forever grateful to Amy Sherald for embedding a piece of Gee’s Bend in her painting.

I loved watching the first story about these remarkable women, and was impelled to buy the book. It has become a favorite of mine! I didn't know about Michel!e Obama's special dress, and how PROUD this group of quilters must be of themselves! God Bless each and every one of them!💕
