Legendary Queen guitarist Brian May stopped by the "Jim Kerr Rock & Roll Morning Show" Friday morning and gave a great interview and impromptu guitar performance for listeners. May discussed a number of topics including the possibility of a new Queen album, his new book "Diableries: Stereoscopic Adventures in Hell," the Freddie Mercury movie, and much more!
May confirmed that he is working on a new album of old Queen recordings. "There is more than I thought there...there's those couple of tracks we've been telling people about with Michael Jackson...a mixture of old and new I think," May explained. "I'm working on one particular track which nobody's going to expect that's just Freddie singing a beautiful song."
May also talked about the Freddie Mercuy movie and revealed that the band has an unknown actor in mind for the part. "We have somebody very much in mind, who is not quite signed on the dotted line yet, but yeah he's a young and upcoming and wonderful actor and a face you probably don't know, but you will soon."
While in studio May also pulled a guitar off the wall in the Q1043 studios and started playing for everyone! As May said, "I just like guitars in the morning."

Brian May + cheap Epiphone + tiny transistor Fender practice amp = Still sounds like Brian May! STUNNING!!!!
Brian may + cheaper taut twine & paper-cup = still sounds like Brian May, only a lot more, and a lot better. If you want to know the truth about a particular star , be it a celestial body or a celebrity, ask it in person, to hear straight from the horse's mouth. Cut out the middle man.
It's great! I assumed a lot of his sound came from his idiosyncratic rig, but he can make a total beginners rig sound the same.
Very few rock legends can go on the radio and actually be more interesting when NOT talking about their musical achievements. Dr May - proud to have you as a fellow Briton.
In music itself, Brian May is brilliant not just as a musician, but as an engineer and a scientist. What other 17-year-old's self-made guitar is recognized as something like the Mona Lisa or Starry Night of guitars? And married to the many innovations in the instrument itself are the electronics (starting with out-of-phase pickups) and in live shows going through one bank of amps playing the live guitar, a delay on one side, and a double delay on the other. He actually has single notes in sequence become chords because of the delay that brings the three together.
To do this you have to have great timing to execute it, but to even try to execute you have to engineer the electronics first on the basis of understanding audio just as a phenomenon for scientific understanding and audio as music in an acoustic space.
I have a friend who asks questions like, who is better? Jimmy Hendrix or Brian May? My answer is yes. At this level of mastery, comparisons are out of place, make no sense. It's like asking who was better: DaVinci with the Mona Lisa, Van Gogh with Starry Night or Picasso with Guernica.
José G. Pérez wow hands down wow
@@jgperez Excellent observation and explanation! May I add one more thing about how Brian has achieved his sound over the years? The Deaky Box! I have heard him many times in interviews talk about how awesome John's little masterpiece is.
I also like what you said about not making comparisons. Rock on!
The more we researched and watched Brian May's interviews, the more we were impressed with such education and humility, in short, a human being worthy of all our reverence !! Congratulations from Brazil!!
I love it when interviewers do their homework with Brian and ask him relevant questions about his current interests. Many interviewers just know him as Queens guitarist and ask him about things that happened 30 years ago.
Such a humble guy, won’t take a compliment from anyone and just move on with it in his stride.
Brian May's face lights up when he picks up the guitar--a man and his true love!
Brian, you are truly, and in so many ways, one of the best role models humanity has had. From the depth of your emotional pool that you kept open despite great tragedy, to your commitment and persistence in doing the right thing, and finally your creative excellence, we salute you and aspire to achieve some of what you have shown is humanly possible!
I can't stop admiring you DEAR BRIAN 🌹 ...
I went to the Strand book signing talked about in this clip in October 0f 2013. Not only did Brian sign my book, but he also signed my treble booster! Nicest guy and exceeded all my expectations when I met him that built up well over 30 years.
Dr. Brian May has such texture and depth and humanity. ‘Who wants to live forever?’ I want Brian May to live forever.
Brian...you’re too humble. You are super smart.
We need more of Brian Mays!
Every jurnalist i hear or read 30 years now after brian interviews all say the same common:humble, feet on earth and warm person no star persona .
This is a right proper interview, and I love it. I really enjoy hearing Brian speaking about something other than the meaning behind "Bohemian Rhapsody". The Starfleet project, science, protecting animals, stereoscopes, and further proving that although equipment is somewhat important, it comes down to the PLAYER. Wonderful, Brian. Well done, good on you.
I love you so much Dr. May :) Incredible human-being,with such a great sense of humor and still such a beauty :") True legends are never forgotten...
What a fantastic interview with the fantastic Brian!
Wow Brian....Dr May.....U amaze me every time u r interviewed!!!! U give voice to the wild animals. Wow. Ur heart is awesome. I am so glad to say that I've been a fan of yours since 1974. I saw u in Providence RI here in the U S. Twice. I'm so proud of that. Love u and the boys. 💝
You are an incredible human being! OMG BRIAN. You are so full of humility and have such a sense of humor. ♥️
Excelente entrevista. May, uno de los rockeros más integrales y completos de la movida.
I loved hearing Dr. Bri's responses and information. My husband has been using a 3-D camera for years. I want to thank Brian for mentioning Freddie - he keeps Freddie alive. And that's all ...
He loves and honesty misses his friend Freddie.
I listen to these 2 on my way to work. Luckily I was ready fir the voice. Brian, as usual, is wonderful.
another fantastic interview with Dr. Brian May; I could listen to this man talk all day - and thank you for the video, great sound on this one for those of us who are hearing impaired, thanks !
fark... made my heart pound when he cranked that guitar up.. :) he's magic
nice to see Tony Iommi get a mention, another legend
You could give him a shovel with a piece of wire, connect it to whatever and it's 100% sure he will still get his famous tone. Brian May is so incredible.
LOL but I'm thinking that you're not too far off the truth because Brian is just that talented!
What an awesome human being!
Brian May with a Epi SG? Awesome!
And it sounds every bit as him! An Epiphone Iommi SG with a small Fender practice amp - and it is still his sound.
Guitars need love, guitars needs to be played! Yes!!!!
Oh, Brian, what a lovely chap 😀
His dissertation is available online. I've read it. He's the only astrophysicist rock god ever to live on the planet, and a wonderful man.
I think my bus driver listens to this station. I didn't know Brian May was on this show? Cool!
Respect to all other Guitarist, IMHO Brian May is the Greatest Guitarist that has ever Lived.
And he would tell you is Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix. He is so humble. Love him 💗
Lovely interview!
That ephiphone sg played without any pick and plugged into a 30 bucks fender amp that sounds better than my 1991 sg standard with Seymour Duncan and my marshall plexi , this is dr Brian may ladies and gentlemen
Damn impressive. He is quite unique and highly talented. We are lucky to have him with us.
A legendary English gentleman!
Couldn't have said it any better
Brian may please come to Peru! We love you here!
Ecuador love you Brian...we Salute you!!!
Dr. Brian May Danke
Caterpillar straw wrappers - hahaha!!! Oh Brian, you adorable dork, you!
necesitaria que lo subtitularan al español.LOVE YOU DOC.!
Nothing wrong with Epiphone guitars, they're feckin awesome.
02:12 Brian cracks an Astrophysics joke, and it makes me love the guy even more LOL
Brian knew a main secret! Watch and see HOW! Neck pick up is main for him on this guitar! Vibrato, sustain, slow note with soft touch is main ! That's a secret! And of course NECK pick up! And place where he play fingers - after 12 fret!
The value of the Epiphone and little Fender amp just went up..
Played by Brain May and signed by Tony Iommi. That'll confuse everyone.
i think Brian's a teacher more than anything...
After he was awarded his PhD he did teach for 5 years. He is a wonderful instructor. I'm glad we have interviews to listen to him. Would be nice if I could have taken a class and had him for the instructor. 👍👍
@@gaylachiriaco8667 he was a Chancellor for 5 years at Liverpool John Moores University but he was not a full-time teacher there. He was teaching Elementary age children when he was in college.
We are not people without our dreams.
Brian thinks the lady DJ is kidding him about his paper caterpillar. She's not. Can you imagine what a handmade Brian May Caterpillar will go for on Ebay?
So, he makes a Gibson sounds like a Dr. May.
I was hoping for Jim Kerr of Simple Minds
Nobody does Brian May quite like Brian May..
And there you have the comment of the day maybe the year possibly the century!!
So so true 👍👍💗
great to hear Dr may, whats with that woman..."howard stern or what"
She sounds like Nancy Fagan on the Steve Vai song The Audience Is Listening, from the album Passion and Warfare.
Brian on a SG. OMG
@JOEMICHAELS, it is in his hands mike, guitarist such as Brian are truly gifted and can play any guitar ,amp and still sound like themselves.
Ed van halen is another fine example of this.
+Seek truth Ed,learned from Dr.May.
Brian H. May B. Sc. (Hons), Ph. D., ARCS., DIC., FRAS. - his full set of letters...
+Alex Dunn I was referring to academics... I tend to ignore civic honours. Those academics are earned.
+Alex Dunn Not wanting to minimise it, but I imagine that CBE thing is nice but not about achievement based on a priori plan, but rather recognition after the fact.
WOW just wow 😳
@@gaylachiriaco8667 Lad did well, no?
Good Radio Chat,
If he asks himself "what am i?" I said "a hooman i mean human" exactly like that
very true brian , they have just filled in a pond near me killing god knows how much wild life, so they can build houses , just cos of the money involved , please keep upt he fight for animals.
What was the song with Freddie vocal that he was working on?
Бог Вас любит Брайан и хочет,что б вы говорили с Ним.
С уважением великим.
Brian looked really pissed off at the ' your voice is a loud one' comment!
Jim Kerr, and here's me thinking Simple Minds 🙄
Bit late replying but I was thinking the same thing. When I saw his name I thought, oh that's what he's doing nowadays.
I know. Ihad just watched 'Don't you forget about me' I saw in the right panel 'Jim kerr interviews Brian May'. I immediately went to it. Won't get fooled again!
Here, you can watch Jim Kerr interview Jim Kerr. ruclips.net/video/AYT4wao7d5o/видео.html
find me my dear older BROTHER 💜
Not the Jim Kerr I was expecting!
This is no excuse, for what I did to you, This is no excuse to hide what I do to you 😻❤️😼😾😔
that's not Jim Kerr ?!
But this is. ruclips.net/video/AYT4wao7d5o/видео.html
I like his brother, James, more.
I thought this Jim Kerr was the singer of Simple Minds.
What an EXCELLENT interview with Brian May :)
But what spoiled it was,,, OMG,,, that bloody woman in the back ground,, aghh,, someone should have chocked her silent well before the interview started,, what a terribly, grating, IRRITATING voice & didn't have anything intelligent to say either !!!
At the end of this interview Brian was clearly referring to renowned young UK actor Ben Whishaw, as both he and his bandmate Roger Taylor were (for some bizarre reason) really keen to get him for the part of Freddie at the time.
However, I believe that Whishaw would've been totally wrong for the role for several reasons.
Firstly, Freddie was born of Indian descent and his distinctive features were very Indian, whereas Whishaw is a white caucasion British born actor who shares none of those features with him.
Also, he is way too thin for the part and has completely different bone structure to Freddie. No amount of make-up or prosthetics could've turned him into a believable Freddie Mercury in a zillion years. While Whishaw is admittedly a very good actor, it still would've been the miscasting of the century.
What's more, he doesn't even have the same speech patterns as Freddie nor share any of his offstage mannerisms, or any of his personality traits.
Therefore, I feel very strongly that he would've been a huge disaster in the role had he had been cast. I was hugely relieved when he mutually agreed with the producers to leave the project.
I also wasn't pleased at all with Rami Malek's performance as Freddie either, as I don't believe it even warranted a nomination for a Best Actor Oscar or any other awards for that matter, let alone winning them. His speaking voice was nothing like Freddie's
My own personal choice for the role would've been up and coming Anglo-Indian actor James Floyd, who is not only a very accomplished actor himself, but he also happens to bare a naturally strong facial resemblance to Freddie, which could obviously have been further enhanced with various wigs and make-up and he is also in the right age range.
To my mind, he would've perfect for the role, but sadly, it didn't happen that way. Ahh...well. That's showbiz for you.
Cheap Epiphone SG, tiny modelling amp, very far from his tone but STILL plays like a legend!
Wrong Jim Kerr. The real one is the lead singer of simple minds.
How inconsiderate and utterly rude to turn off the telephone caller whilst he is talking.... and without a thankyou too.
Typical radio presenter attitude.
Poor Brian.
peace🇬🇧
Hard to imagine but hewas asecondary school maths teacher in Brixton fora while(tough area)
And I do mean hard ,the school dinner ladies had been thrown out of the commandos for violent conducted there
Brian is great as always, but this woman has a annoying voice and she is too loud. Dont listen on speakers mates..
Wow!!!!! These are by far the most unpleasant, irritating radiohosts i've heard in a while! Amazed at Brian's kindness and ability to tollerate brutal stupidity dressed in a tone of bombastic pomp.
disagree
I totally disagree. Brian was asked interesting questions that he is not usually asked. He was able to talk about his other passions and interests. The woman is a New Yorker and typical female radio side-kick/foil for this articulate DJ.
Whoever the woman is, she's no Robin Quivers.
Thank God. Who needs another Robin. Good greef.
@@marytamone5095 Your opinion is worthless. Keep it to yourself next time.
tht woman adds nothing to the conversation
Not a queen fan at all but as a mark of respect queen should have died with Freddie.
It almost seems like a morbid infatuation or lack of acceptance in trying to keep the Freddie thing alive let the man rest in peace.its all very disturbing.
flirting ;p
Brian Mays plastic Caterpillar going for 100,000 dollars or pounds
That childish woman is annoying. What is her contribution supposed to be?
Shelli Sonstein is her name. Jim Kerr's sidekick and news reporter. They have been working together close to 30 years.
Great interview!
I was hoping for Jim Kerr of Simple Minds
