Brian May presents the Story Behind The Red Special.
The 2020 updated edition of BRIAN MAY'S THE RED SPECIAL WITH SISMON BRADLEY is OUT NOW and there’s also a limited number of SPECIAL BUNDLES available from shop.londonste...
The book celebrates the iconic guitar that Brian built with his father in 1963 and has treasured and played all over the world for over 50 years. Brian played The Red Special on every Queen album, in all of Queen’s live shows and on the most special of occasions, including his legendary appearance on the roof of Buckingham, Live Aid, the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics and the Oscars.
In addition to Brian's compelling narrative, detailing these incredible moments, the book features previously unseen photographs of The Red Special in every stage of its creation as well as shots of Brian in action on stage and behind the scenes with his beloved guitar.
This updated edition contains two new chapters, one exploring technical repairs and maintenance and the other, the Red Special’s role in the Academy Award-winning Bohemian Rhapsody, revealed in Brian’s own words, along with those of Gwilym Lee who played Brian in the film.
Only Brian May, the world’s greatest guitarist, could have a signature guitar as unique as The Red Special, with its own story that fills the pages of a book!

This is so cool. I will never forget seeing Queen in 1976. My best friend and me cut school to get front row tickets. During the concert Brian noticed me and my friend singing along. He shook my hand and said to me “You 2 girls know the words to our songs better than us. What song would you like to hear?” Somehow I spoke and said Keep Yourself Alive he replied You got it! My best friend requested Liar. What a night! My best friend also got Roger’s drumsticks and Freddie gave me a rose. I also touched his bare foot when my friend dared me to do it. Freddie just smiled. Amazing night I will never forget and still have my stub and photos and yes she still has the drumsticks.
Wow you two are the luckiest people on earth. Sadly I wasn't born at this times😩
You guys are lucky dude so damn lucky I haven't even witnessed their music live...I was born years after those😓
🙋🏾♀️ Hiya Diane Davies 🤭 WOW 😯 ! Lucky Ducklings 🐥 ANNNND to dare touch 👨🏻’s foot ‘n ya got a smile from him on top of the rose is great! Did your friend display those drum sticks in a shadow box along with some of the pics? 💁🏾♀️ What a great memory for you both indeed✌🏾!
Dear Diane .... what a beautiful.., amazing... unforgettable experience..!!! You and your friends are the more luckiest people on earth!!
Big hugs and kisses to you from Chile 🇨🇱... and ... no... I was never had the chance to see them!! 😭😭😭😭
U and ur best friend are really lucky. A moment to cherish forever, I wish I was born during ur age😂😭
Such a humble rock star.
God bless Dr Brian May.
The history of The legend red special
The story of legend's legendary guitar
@@big_smoke7t Absolutely! It takes a legend to bring the best out of a guitar he (and his dad) built about half a century ago.
yeah thats literally the video.
Brian may was my first inspiration When I first started playing guitar
Me tooo mann
NO guitar has a grater history than Mr May"s RED SPECIAL.
He always mentions his Dad.
An admirable musician and man.
An extraordinary man who has lived an extraordinary life. A constant inspiration.
I agree
Look what a good family behind a child can bring about❤️❤️❤️❤️
So true
Going to rap on here, no soapbox, just opining, but as you've both stated, look what a good family can do.
It's something of a rarity in our world of increasingly less resolve in the face of temptation. Family doesn't take money, but it takes truly knowing and believing that, and it takes sacrifice and education, either the bookish type or the practical application type. I'm not religious, but the Church as a community definitely kept families together, and eventually, even secular populations believed divorce was unacceptable. I've sat in church three times in my life, I'm a complete agnostic atheist, but Abrahamic "Church" was good for many reasons, family solidarity and belief in staying together being chief among them. Two parents trying their best, that's all it takes.
Saw live, magnificent
I really hope Brian lives up till I die!
Thats what I hope too.
Me too.... I think I will couldn't resist to see them disappear before me... Freddie was enough pain and sorrow..!!! 😭😭😭
One of the greats he has a wonderful sound. I regret not seeing Queen they were awsome.
Could listen to him all day! 🤷🏻♀️
@@tonyt5919 I agree!
Me too
Brian May is the nicest and kindest famous person I've ever met. He listened intently to what I had to say and appeared generally interested in my input. Thank you Brian. We appreciate how you appreciate us.
I was invited to his house as a representative of Boss pedals. Unfortunately he wasn't in but I did spend the day with his guitar tech who was a lovely bloke. He even let me play one of the Guild Brian May reproductions, which just happened to be laying around, thru an old AC30. I was gutted not to meet Brian. I was there trying to broker a deal for a Boss inspired Pete Cornish style pedal board. It didn't happen in the end.
How beautifully Brian explains.
Love it how he says he collected Star Wars toys as a kid.Brian, you would have been 30 at least !
Could listen to him all day
Like a MasterClass done by a master. You could hear a pin drop while Brian was speaking.
FASCINATING.
Not "like".
So glad you don't have an attitude like some rock stars! You have my respect!
This reminded me of the Flash Gordon sound track. Incredible for that time. And today also.
This guy a amazing! So gentle and polite. His voice is so calm. Never expect who's behind a great rockstar!
BRILLIANT. 👏👏👏👏👏🎶🎸🎼 I remember Brian talking about his homemade guitar on BBC radio back in the 70s. Love it. (My father's generation were great craftsmen back in 50s, 60s, 70s in a heavily industrialised Britain. Making us go karts and sleighs in the winter - with "stuff" borrowed from the local steelworks!) Queen are unique in a way no other band will ever match. God Save Our Queen!!!!!
Very well said dear Ivor!!!
Queen are most exceptional band ever... I really love them!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
God save our QUEEN..!!! 🥰🥰🥰🥰
He is such a great teacher. And he makes it look so easily
He's so good, it was interesting to listen to even for someone like me who doesn't know much about guitars, I definitely learned some about how electric guitars work. It was easy to understand too. Makes me wonder how he would be teaching about astphysics or stereoscopes (his specialty).
He is such a humble human being!
What a warm and modest bloke.
Brain may is not just a guitar player he is the symphony orchestra by him self master of everything rock on forever
A true pioneer of Rock, thank you Brian.
It’s so fulfilling to hear Brian talk about being poor and having to make his guitar because they couldn’t afford a Strat or Les Paul.
I’d guess that Dr Bri’s Red Special is probably worth more than any “professionally made” guitar; it’s certainly the most distinctive sounding electric guitar ever recorded!
And after playing this guitar for decades, Brian stands as one of the most recognizable guitarist of all time!
Congratulations Brian for fulfilling your dreams and inspiring others to dream also!
What an amazing man. Thank you Brian, and your dad.
Respect
What a great artist and sweetheart!
Brian was my original guitar hero in the late 70’s before anybody talked about him. A real gentleman
We love you Brian 😇😇😇
Know wonder no one can copy Queens sound! Its a 1 of a kind! With an amazing sound!
Brian, it is incredible that now a days with the internet, we are closer to you
Dr. May just seems like one of the most genuinely sweet people that you could meet. I know he has bad days like everyone else but I would think he just handles it like a British Gentleman.
Tremendous person, such a gracious artist.
Queen for me in middle school was always on my turntable, just I as was starting to play guitar , I really tuned into his playing and back then learning he made his guitar was impressive to say the least. After that Queen movie, I got back to my roots and really enjoy seeing segments like these
Thanks for posting!!!!!
Nothing like the love of a mother and father no money doesn’t matter. I wish they asked about his father
Brian is so humble he doesn’t give himself enough credit he’s literally one of the best guitarist to ever walk the planet and he talks down on himself.
The red special has a very beautiful sound! I love this guitar!!! 👊👊😍😍
You could tell hes a great teacher. I like how he explains this stuff
Mr. Brian!!🥰🥰🥰
May is such a good teacher, unlike many self-taught geniuses. Any non musician can follow this talk, with no prior knowledge of guitars or music. It’s Electric Guitar 101, taught by one of the all-time greats.
So many Rock guitarists love Brian...Vai, Satriani, Bettencourt, Collen and many more.
Fantastic guy.seen them in 75 free trader hall.
78 Dortmund westfenhalle.brilliant Memories..we played at the westfenhalle a week later..as TAXI
Along with Jimi Hendrix, Brian May remains one of my biggest influences. My Dad used to play Queen in the car all the time growing up. To this day I still play my Brain May guitar. I hope this guy continues to inspire and make great music for a lot longer. Thank you Mr. May!
Two fabulous legends! ❤️ Keep on rocking Brian! Stay well! ❤️
We love you Brian❤️ best guitarist all over the world to my opinion🎸✨
Long overdue! Dedication to music, animals, astronomy, stereoscopy, mentoring others, supporting charities… the list goes on! And a gentleman too. Congratulations Sir Bri ❤
The Red Special is legendary and Brian playing the Lady is a unique experience. I think he is only really complete with his guitar. I love it listening to him playing the Red Special, and of course I love it listening to him telling stories about his life as a Rockstar. Thanks for sharing this very interesting video. 🤩
🎼 Absolutely incredible!!! 😳
That guitar is a living thing, Dr. May gives it life and it is all creation the way it sings.
I have been building guitars for over 30 yrs and am always amazed at the beauty and functionality of this guitar. Manufacturers are always trying to come up with something unique and different with mixed results. For Brian and his father to hit on this combo is nothing short of astounding!
I cannot get enough of the story of The Red Special! I had no idea until recently, but I did always wonder how Brian May has been able to make the sounds and music he has. What a labor of love between father and son. Amazing!!
This is freaking gold!!!!!! Bloody awesome old man. Well done.
Very nice and emotional video! Red Special is part of your body, your mind and your soul! I see you as teacher explaning to us your love for this important instrument in your life! Congratulations to you and to your father! ❤🎉
My lord! You’ve either got it or you don’t right? Brian is the whole package. And sweet as can be!
Absolutely FANTASTIC,’ LOVE THE GUYS SO MUCH ❤️
Brian, you are so very talented. You've inspired me with your playing. Queen will live on. God Bless You 🙏💕
Thank you I'm obliged from all the artists support peace and love for all people. Xc .
Thank you respect y
Thank you
Incredible cool story about Red Special. It's so cool she has made it through all of these years, your dad would be very proud. I could never afford a copy of red though one day I would really enjoying playing one of the copies. It's wonderful that you made it all the way to the top playing just one guitar really. She has to be a part of your soul now. Bravo Brian..
Remember the Milton Keynes '82 gig, when he thought that was the guitar fucked, coz it cut out mid solo lol . You could actually see the fear in his face, and then a look of sheer relief when it came back on
Sick in bed, find this gem to view, and suddenly I feel better....go figure....can’t you play the Rona away Bri?!🥰🥰🥰
Brian is just such a wonderful human and so inspiring. I too started guitar after hearing Hank Marvin on the radio in the early sixties 🎸
Thanks for the fascinating story Brian 🎸❣️. I can listen to you talk all day long 😍🤗❣️ Stay safe darling 🙏❣️ And KEEP ON ROCKIN 👑🎸❣️❣️ Much LOVE from a huge fan from Northeastern Pennsylvania 🇱🇷❣️
Have seen this a number of times. It allows me to usually recognize when someone is playing a Brian May guitar and of course you always know when Bri is playing!
I attended 5 Queen concerts in LA during the 70s & early 80s. All magic - now I understand some of the physics and technology that contributed to that magic. Thank you Brian!!!! One question to the UK in general: why doesn't this legendary genius have a knighthood yet?
He’s probably refused it. He’s objected pretty loudly to the Royal Family hunting, so they’d probably block it anyway.
@@cathygallagher2465 it's a thought. He's never mentioned whether or not he was offered a Knighthood. Do you know if he has?
Look what happened
That`s awesome Brian, the sound of Queen no matter what you play.
Hi Brian. This a very cool video. Thank you for the presentation of your Masterpiece Guitar 🎸. Keep rocking ❤. Blessings from Auckland New Zealand. And oh! Enjoyed "Queen Rock Montreal" in Imax yesterday. Queen is The Best Band in the universe. It's official now ❤❤❤
Brain May is a pure legend in so many ways but mostly the real quintessential british guitar hero
That Red Special must be insured for a million dollars. Literally one of a kind hand made. Love the story of its conception.🤘
What a great video. A very humble well spoken man. Brian is the type of person we can all learn a thing or two from. Just listen !
05:28His memories of his father really hit him in the heart. 💪🏼❤
You're the best!!
This man is a genius!
Congratulations, Sir Brian May.
It was a joy to listen to this. Thank you so much!
I wonder if the Red Special will be a family heirloom or be given to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? It will hold pride of place whenever it is displayed. Brian May and all of Queen will always be in my heart. Thank you for sharing.
God bless you forever ❤️ 🙏, you are the Man.👍👏👏👏👏👏👏🎼🎶
I never had the chance to see Queen in concert, but I've been a fan since 1975 whenI was in a fairly good cover band in Jacksonville Florida. Our Guitar player (Kent) was the most talented and could play almost anything perfectly by ear (SG through a fender twin reverb). He loved Brian May.
What a wonderful gift. Thank you so much Brian
I'm still smilling. This video made my day. I love the sound of Red Special. You're such an inspiration for me!
And I think I really like whales sounds too
Brian❤❤❤
I also love Brian May 💕
I saw them on the week of my 7th Bday....my sister took me with her then BF and then her husband years later....it was July 1979 for The Live Killers Tour...at the time they were the HOTTEST ACT IN ALL OF ROCK....the dry ice....the huge tungsten panel of lights ...and I have NEVER been the same since..
Such a unique sound, Brian's guitar does have its own voice. Someone said is there anything this guy is crap at? LOL. He just a SWEETHEART.
That was extremely awesome 👍👍
Fantastic stories and great playing Brian. Enjoyed hearing you mention James Burton, who is also truly amazing. Believe it or not, he played guitar at a church I went to in the 1980s in LA and I had no idea who he was . . . until one Sunday when we had a guest guitarist at church . . . the guest started playing, looked out into the audience, and then completely stopped. He explained that he was never nervous when he played until that day, because the great James Burton was sitting out there listening to him. I believe he would have said the same thing about @BrianMay !
Just perfect guitar, and perfect guitarist having fun. Keep going on Bri🎸🎸🎸
No better sound in music than when Dr. Brian May plsys the red special. Saw him live and obviously he and his ole lady, didnt disappoint! Greatest guitar player ever!
Thank you, Bri! This is so interesting and a bit funny at times. I don't know who looks happiest right now: You holding, talking about, and demonstrating sounds (airplane sounds are super important...LOL!) on your Red Special, or me watching you hold, talk about, and demonstrate sounds (especially the airplane sounds...LOL!) on your Red Special. You are a true legend! 🎵😍❤️🎶 😁 🎶❤️🤩🎵
Thank you for sharing this wonderful story- I'd like to listen to your voice ( your two voices) day and night...And once again you have touched my heart!!!! I send you all my love - take care of yourself!♥️🌈❤
My favorite sound that Brian makes is at the end of the Wembley concert, the recorded God save the Queen has the guitar pronounced. What a great sound.
I once met Jim Marshall (inventor of the 'modern' valve amplifier - Marshall Amplifiers) and he told me that he was once a drummer, and invented the thing so that HE could hear what the guitarists were playing ! - as a monitor for himself. The electric guitar was invented afterwards and the sound of 20th century music became what it became when someone decided to turn this monitor amp system at the audience. Funny story, heh ? Like Brian invented his own guitar, Jim Marshall built this machine himself, but had no idea where it would lead ! (on a personal note he also told me that he preferred acoustic guitars to electric ones - so he kind of created a Frankenstein's monster with this "tool for drummers". - True Story !!!!
Brian eres único como la red special
😘
Saludos desde Atenas Alajuela Costa Rica 🇨🇷
Its been said but i must add my own spin on how winderful it is/was to listen to you share your thoughts and aspirations about your guitars and your process playing them , even about your relationship with your father.
Such a kind and generous man and wonderful musician.
After the video i had to pick up one of my own "old girls" for a strum.
You (and your associates) are a tremendous inspiration so, my greatest and heart felt appreciation to you and all the folks that made this video possible. 🙏🙌💞
I bought the book and my next purchase, as soon as I convince my wife it is a necessity, will be a Brian May Guitars Red Special.
Red special e Brian May sono la stessa cosa.......uno non può fare a meno dell'altra. Siete speciali perché siete stati fatti uno per l'altro. Grazie anche al tuo papà per questa meraviglia 🎸🎸🎸
Love your voice. Thank you for explaining. Thank you for the 5 Finger Death Punch Solo. Amazing. Love you for being who you are and the hair I would recognize. Always, Elizabeth T. Reed, Asian Angel, 1982.
Podría escuchar 10 horas seguidas a Bri con un delay!! Increíble... Saludos desde Necochea!
This was precious. Thank you Mr May.🤘🏿🤘🏻🤘🏽
This was very informative. How on Earth could I have come so far without actually understanding all this. VERY helpful. Thank you!
Excelente maestro! Like!
Love this. What a story! What a guitar!
What a fun & informative video. Tons & Tons of talent right there on that stage! (& I've got my book ordered as it has a couple more chapters. Can't wait).
Brian May, Brian May!
I love you Brian may
