    If you get offered a new boat I would take it because it will probably have 6 forward torpedo tubes and a deeper crush depth.

  • @SangsungMeansToCome
    @SangsungMeansToCome Месяц назад +3

    You're incredibly generous with your torpedoes. Redundancy for possible duds aside, a merchant ship below 10000 tons should go down with one proper hit. That means as central and as deep as possible, ideally exploding just below the keel. You mostly use a setting of 6 feet, much too shallow. The deeper the better, if the torps play along.

    A Shimakaze?! NICE! Though she was a one-off, she was a beautiful, well-armed, and VERY fast ship. (Though she never sported her name on her hull; they'd done away with that by the time she was commissioned; the last DD known to have been given hull markings was Akizuki, and that was only on trials in May 1942.)
    You're now at 435,742 tons sunk...only 17,975 tons from the all-time record! Congrats!

    Here's an idea someone should put in to a mode. The Germans in both WWI & WWII had ships that looked & acted like cargo ships. When subs & other ships got close to inspect it, they would drop the sides and opened up with the guns they had hidden. Japan copied these tactic and caught some of our subs/ships unaware. This would really give us a challenge in the game. What do you guys think?

  • @MrEnvirocat
    @MrEnvirocat Месяц назад

    I heard a statistic from the Asianometry channel on RUclips concerning Japanese steel industry history. In 1945 80% of Japanese ship construction was made out of wood. That's probably 100% of merchant ship production. That says a whole lot about the effectiveness of the US submarine campaign.

    USS Salmon is definitely a lucky boat. With no periscopes, I was expecting that firing spreads of torpedoes virtually blind would be about as effective as shooting spit balls. But, instead, you sank three ships, including a fast moving destroyer. That deck gun duel was a bit risky, Captain, but once again, luck was with you. That enemy task group had some juicy targets, including an aircraft carrier. But, was that a BB you damaged? Well, next time!!!

    • @colindouglas7769
      @colindouglas7769 Месяц назад +2

      Yup, it looked like Taff managed to kick a Kongo class in the butt. There were at least two Kongo battleships and a nice juicy aircraft carrier. Very lucky on taking down the Shimakaze destroyer firing blind, but hey, if you don't shoot, you don't get kills!

  • @CrazzlY

    Old poor Salmon sure has seen better days. Better trade her in for a new boat, Taff. She needs some proper TLC in port, safely tucked away from high seas, storms and depth charges. :)

    • @owenstockwood5040
      @owenstockwood5040 Месяц назад +1

      And a unique destroyer at that! The Shimakaze was a one off vessel designed to test a high pressure steam system. I am pretty sure she was the fastest IJN ship (not counting small vessels like Torpedo Boats) of WW2.

    • @timonsolus
      @timonsolus Месяц назад +1

      Nah. It's just that the SH4 dev team decided to give the sim "movie style explosions" instead of realistic style explosions. So even an 80 ton sampan blows up like a 8,000 ton tanker.

      @@timonsolus Probably ...but in real life the IJN and IJA hated each other and would IJN would toss deliveries overboard for the IJA to basically swim out and get their supplies...not too far fetched that IJA would press local fishermen to haul their supplies around "Any volunteers to run these supplies out?" Bayonet one fisherman ...Any heroes for Hirohito ? All hands go up...

    • @timonsolus
      @timonsolus Месяц назад +1

      @@genuinsanity : That was because many of the Japanese occupied islands in the Pacific had no harbour, and therefore no dock for supply ships to unload at. Therefore supplies had to be transferred from the cargo ships to small boats so that they could be landed ashore.
      Only in desperate situations would the Japanese run their cargo ships aground on the beach - for obvious reasons.

    Awesome episode taff, that was real ballsy and tough stuff taking on an armed merchant on the surface in broad daylight, a close gun duel indeed, but the fog of war smiles upon you.. yes..as you say.. sometimes you have to take that risk. Even with combat damage and setback.. you dealt the enemy some nasty blows, that torpedo hit on that enemy Battleship will no doubt effect enemy morale and call for immediate repairs, but that tanker and destroyer kill.. magnificent. Sweet job in sinking that enemy destroyer.. that's going to hurt the IJN good and proper as well as effect enemy morale and make the seas a lot easier to deal with for friendly subs. Destroying that tanker.. more enemy oil wiped out and the enemy's logistics and life's blood get hurt badly.. and of course sending another large merchant and a small fish / crabbing vessel to the seabed via the deck gun.. that's what I call a great day's work, more tonnage sent to the seabed and you go above the call of duty. Great work, magnificent.. keep it up and well done mate 👏👍
