Living in or being from Valyria doesn’t mean you have the blood of old Valyria so not every family in Valyria before the doom could claim a dragon but the blood of old Valyria is what gives the Targaryens the power to claim dragons not the other way around. Velaryons were also included in Targaryen breeding and it’s also said in the book that the only house they consistently had relations with were house Velaryon because they Carrie the traits, but Corlys and the tow brothers Adam and Allyn have no direct ancestry to house Targaryen, the reason they can claim dragons is because they have the blood of old Valyria. It was confirmed by the show creator Ryan J. Condal in an interview for Entertainment weekly and is why they specifically chose house Velaryon to diversify, changing the thing that maid them so unique from purple eyes and white hair to dark skin and pale hair.
You don’t need Targaryen Blood to claim a dragon if you’re Valyrian and have Valyrian blood you can claim a dragon, the only reason people associate Targaryens directly with dragons is because they wore the first to leave Valyria with dragons after the doom, traditionally house Valyrian didn’t ride dragons but have the blood of old Valyria so they have the power to, Corleys married in to the family with Rhaenys and doesn’t have any direct Targaryen ancestors, Steve Toussaint Corly and Abubakar Salim Alyn have both spoken about it, it was also confirmed in an interview by the show creator Ryan J. Condal. Also Aegon remembers what happened at rooks rest the reason he said he doesn’t is because he didn’t want Aemond to hurt him.
I think Targaryen, dragon riding family blood is needed. Not any Valyrian blood. If what you say was true, the first place they would have looked for potential dragonriders would have been house Celtigar and Velaryon. But they instead looked for targaryen blood in house Darklyn and other targ bastards in Kingslanding.

Condal and Miguel Sapochnik, they have all spoken about Targaryens maintain power mentioning the use of propaganda to stop other people from claiming dragons but its the blood of old Valyria that gives them the power. Targaryen blood isn’t even really a thing, its just the name of there house if you know the books there were 40 dragon riding families in old Valyria, all of them having the power to claim dragons because they had the blood of old Valyria and more families like house Velaryon shared the blood so although they didn’t traditionally claim dragons they still can. It doesn’t mention anywhere in the books that you need to be from the family Targaryen, the only reason there associated with dragons specifically is because they were the first family to leave Valyria with dragons and are only family to still have dragons, regardless if you have the blood of old Valyria you can claim a dragon.
@@ScottSeven-n3f The books are vague in many areas regarding this on purpose, actor interviews aren’t going to be much help. Anybody that has ridden a dragon has either had Targaryen blood (IE Valyrian dragonrider blood) or their parentage is unknown
@@bazookabullet101 Yes they had Valyrian blood thats the point it doesn’t refer to them having Targaryen blood ether though, house Targaryen is a house, a family line and weren’t even a particular wealthy one before the doom, every house that had dragons however are referred to as the blood of old Valyria and having the blood we know is what gives them the specific traits and mystical origin. Also the interviews that confirm that Valyrian blood is what gives individuals the power to claim dragons aren’t from the actors although they have poked about it, they’re from the creators Ryan J. Condal and Miguel Sapochnik.
@@ScottSeven-n3f Yes Targaryen is a house that keeps its bloodline relatively pure so therefore I am able to refer to their Targaryen bloodline. As Targaryen blood, just like there is Lannister blood and wildling blood. No reason to be nitpicky there. But it’s a mystery unless you got sources
