    thank you soooo much for this tutorial! my original o-ring blew last week on my '98 Audi A4 B5 1.8T 227K miles. the one day i was actually early for work so i let her warm up before leaving - she vomited all her oil just idling so i was lucky not to be on the road when the oil pressure light popped on.
    test oil: walmart syntech 5w-30 $17.00/5 quarts: to fill, start up, and watch the oil spew out between oil cooler and housing
    Audi OEM O-Ring/Gasket PN: 038-117-070-A $6.40 + tax
    Lowes Kobalt 27mm deep socket: $8.53 + tx - DID NOT NEED. will return. regular socket fits - there is only about 1/2" of threaded oil pipe exposed after oil cooler is in place.
    notes:
    -i thought this was an oil system / engine disaster until i found this possible root cause.
    -retaining nut was completely loose. i've never checked before or even thought about it.
    -A4 has a reservoir to the driver's side of the working location making manipulation more difficult but i did not have to remove oil cooler from coolant supply hoses.
    -project gave me a chance to replace belly shield - i just zip-tie them to bracket and wheel well location holes - much easier than crap Audi superspecial fasteners that continually get lost.
    one Q: do you know if A4 came with any sort of OEM protective plastic tray insert to cover battery etc between the 2 firewalls? i can't remember and wonder if at some point a service person just chucked it into the bin.

      Happy to hear that my video was of help!
      You are correct, the deep socket is not needed... personal preference.
      Yes, I'm pretty sure there should be a plastic cover similar to what the Passat has.

      It's a good idea to always check the tightness of the nut at every oil change.... and the tightness of the pipe. =)

    This will be my second time changing this seal on my 98. last was 10 . Perhaps I'll do it as a maintenance item every 5 years. So easy with an oil change

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  6 лет назад

      They do seem to not last as long these days... I check / tighten the nut at every oil change, but as soon as I see oil seeping from behind the cooler, it's becomes a recommendation for the customer.

    I know that I posted a comment just awhile ago, but didn't see it get posted. Anyway, I'll post it again. Amazing how an owner can let oil squirt out and let his engine get dangerously low on oil to possibly have engine damage. Nice work Thomas on replacing the seal on the oil cooler, ah, I mean heat exchanger HaHa! And could you tell me how much oil my car needs? LOL...take care Thomas!!

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  7 лет назад

      Over the years we went through a bunch of guys... they all left for "bigger & better" things. I can understand a customer wondering how much (because they don't want to buy too much at the store), but when you have a coworker ask you, WHILE he's pouring oil into the funnel... that takes the cake! Sigh!!

    Panties in a bunch. My oil drain bolt was a 19mm, not a 17. But it would be good to inform or warn folks that the pipe that holds everything in place can be loose. Probably not a factory first time at my point. So I was surprised when I had everything out and I needed to tighten the pipe back up, and you need a " 3/8" internal pipe tightener to do the job or you' ll be stuck at home and need this tool to finish this job. And my VW dealer looked up a heater core gasket when I said "Heat Exchanger. LOL.

      Oil pressure light at idle or when rpm reach 2000? When cold or when the engine is warm?
      Oil pressure switch is just above the oil cooler... your leak could be the cooler seal or the pressure switch.

    Thank you so much for this video. Ending up w a lot of oil in my coolant reservoir. My indy told me that based on a pressure test that I don't need a head gasket. I have this part now and going to replace the cooler tomorrow and pray that he's right. Thanks so much for this video! By the way, what do you use to shampoo the engine? There's a lot of oil caked up on the cooler that I got off, but looks like some on the back of the engine block that I can't get to with a can of brake cleaner. I want to clean that too and see where it might be coming from. Either way, thanks again for helping make this job easier.

      Dawn liquid dish soap. I also run it through the cooling system on vehicles that have oil in the system. It can take 4 or more flushes till nothing but clean water comes out.

    • @jazz4life
      @jazz4life 2 года назад

      @@EXOVCDS Thanks again for the reply. So to flush with the dish soap, I'd use that and distilled water and then let it run through the system on a short drive, then flush again, then repeat, etc? I got the oil cooler changed today. I think I solved my problem. On the inlet hose the coolant was still bright pink but in the outlet hose it was brown inside and you could tell oil was mixing with it. Finishing it up with a n oil change tomorrow and will be flushing the system then too.

    Do i need to remove coolants first?

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  2 месяца назад

      If I didn't remove coolant, then you don't have to.
      If you are replacing the cooler, then yes.
      If you are only replacing the upper seal, then no.
      I don't know what you are wanting to do, so I don't know if you have to drain the coolant.
      If you are replacing the cooler, just disconnect one of the coolant hoses from the cooler.
      You will need to remove the belly pan / engine splash guard and you will need something to catch the coolant... and the oil (some oil will drain out when you remove the oil filter).
      It's a good idea to watch the video several times... to understand what is happening.

    Have you ever heard of an oil cooler breach, I which water and oil mix? Ive put two head gaskets on and im still getting water in my oil! First gasket made it about 2000 miles before it started mixing. The second one I just put in 50 miles ago, and i have water in my oil this morning. I've followed factory specs on installation. Im using Felpro gaskets. I even turned it an extra 1/4 turn this past time. Im losing my mind over this thing and I cant even get any answers from the forum that im in. I thought maybe I didnt scrape the block well enough, so I was thorough this time.... I wouldnt think that water would enter the oil through the cooler because oil pressure is higher, but im at my wits end with this thing. I love this little car and dont want to except defeat. Please, please, please help me!

    • @scottisizzle
      @scottisizzle 4 года назад

      Although, I'm convinced its something to do with my head gasket. I checking other options. This is the third gasket ive put. The very first one I put in did start doing it as well around 2000 miles, but I had a hose come off and it did get hot, so I assumed it was from the heat, but the head wasnt warped when I had the machine shop inpect it. And yes, I did have it resurfaced the first time. Checked every time since.... Maybe I need factory head bolts???

      What engine? 1.8T?
      Like I said, once everything is clean (wash the area with engine shampoo / degreaser) it should be easier to see where the oil is coming from. Dipstick tube is just a press fit, no need for sealant. You can add a dye to the oil and then use black light to see where the oil is coming from (the dye will glow under black light)... can be bought at most auto parts stores.

    Holy shit. Really not an engine to run low on oil if you ask me.
    I have seen engines miraculously survive being run on no oil. I saw a V6 jag S type driven on a 70 mile round trip on the motorway by a guy who thinks hes the stig without a drop of oil and survive with no detectable ill effects. We shoved a bottle of oil in it and it lasted another 4 years/40k before being written off in an accident.

      Yeah... I think he was smart and kept the rpm low. Time will tell.

    while you 'have the VW Passat oil cooler' out...you conceivably could replace the Knock Sensor ..for those 150K +mileage VW Passat owners
    that have Engine Light with a "Bank 2 Knock Sensor error code P0330', although the intake manifold is recommended to remove 1rst,...Ughh!
