Small addition, Remember Cuban Missile crisis, why US threatened war back then? Also, if Russia would have been made part of NATO, this would have never happened, why were they isolated and ignored? Another thing, please research about the atrocities and discrimination on Russian heritage people in Ukraine, as per Russia's concern, they are/were systematically targeted. And oh, the coupe in 2014, where the Government of Ukraine was toppled and pro-West/US government was installed.

I am a French citizen and although I believe this invasion should not have happened I often asked questions such as: Why did the international community not take sanctions against the US when they invaded Irak? Nothing also happened when the EU and the US recognized Kosovo that claimed separation from Yugoslavia, yet we treat the Donbass situation differently. Your clear and well written article provides a great point of view to know both sides of the story. Yes there is blame on the west and the US on driving Poutin to where he is now. I am saddened at the Western news media that is more sensational and provides biased information, not true analysis. And it is also saddening to see that the EU and the US do not appear to be in a mood to ind pacific solutions. I believe that it has always been a manipulation to reduce Russia to a poor economic level so that only one superpower remains. It is time for emerging nations to take the lead!

It is Putin making Russians jump at shadows. He is power hungry and wants to leave a legacy for himself as the one who restored Russia to it’s USSR glory days. The problem is the world has moved on and globalised and in order for Putin to strengthen his grip he must unify the people around his agenda. How do all dictators do that? They place the people in fear of a foreign aggressor. In this case, “Nazis in Ukraine harming ethnic Russians in Donbas” and, “NATO wants to invade Russia”. The conflict in Donbas has been agitated by Russia in order to reclaim more “soviet” lands. NATO wouldn’t exist if not for Russia’s aggression and is purely a defensive Pact. But given Putin has eliminated any dissenting voices in Russian media, the average Russian ends up brainwashed by state media.

It doesn't even make sense to be talking about NATO expanding to the east because in 1990 at the time everything to the east was controlled by the USSR. This is exactly what the US and UK did. It does NOT promise miiitary assistance by any party. You can see the flaw here. It did not anticipate a violater being a veto member of the security council. So Russia bears the entirty of the responsiblity for breaking this treaty, as well as the many other lies they've promulgated lately. The problem with the idea of NATO "absorbing the entire security belt of Russia" is that Russia doesn't have the right to expect other sovereign nations to act as a security belt for itself. They are not Russia's property or belong in it's sphere in any way. Anyone suggesting that them joining a defence alliance was somehow a crime against Russia only reveals the imperialistic mindset that European countries are mere satellite nations to Russia which are obligated to serve the national interests of Russia. That is the very reason the countries wanted to join NATO in the first place. No one in Europe would have joined NATO if Russia didn't have a history of oppressing and subjucating it's neighbouring countries and the fact that Russia invaded Ukraine twice unprovoked only proves that they were right to fear Russia. Russia should take a good look in the mirror and really think about why so many of it's neighbours have rushed to join NATO. It is not some American plot to undermine Russia but the result of Russia's massive history of bullying it's neighbours, who have turned to NATO to protected themselves from it. This video talks as if NATO somehow schemed the expansion and the countries that joined it were some passive pawns in the game, but every country joined out of their own will and initiation, it was their own idea, not NATO's. NATO didn't plan or orcestrate this expansion. Should NATO have rejected them just because it might make Russia nervous? And NATO is a police, it only acts if one of it's members is unjustly attacked. So Russia had no reason to consider NATO a threat unless it wanted to do something evil to it's neighbours.

    • @PeterPete
      @PeterPete Месяц назад

It's deeper than you think imo. NATO has planned and orchestrated this expansion because it spreads western hegemony further eastwards. I think the West should take a good long look in the mirror because it is rather ugly.

This is the purest form of free, balanced and finally serious journalism. I'm Austrian married to an Ukrainian wife and as such I have the war more or less daily even in my living room. So I'm of course against it. On the other hand it was clearly expectable, that Russia one day will fall crazy over the NATO expansion. Personally I call this passive aggressive expansion without any real need for it, since after the dissolution of the former UdSSR anyway the US have remained as the only superpower.
The pity is that Putin, at least at in the early days of his presidentship, has been a historic chance for builing up trust. What's not mentioned in the report, is the fact, that Russia even suggested to become a NATO member and in parallel wanted to become a member of the EU. Both suggestions have been turned down by the West.
And although having family relations to Ukraine, I'm sorry to say, that for my point of view, the actual Ukrainian leadership under President Selensky is to blame as well. Their insisting on a NATO membership is like pouring oil into a burning fire. It was a clear call from Russia, that they will never accept this step.
Just imagine - we write 2050 and Canada and Mexico form a military agreement with China, inviting China to put some divisions of military forces on american soil. How will the US react to that? The will for sure not accept it, i.e. since the Monroe doctrin is still in force, in which the US clearly declare, that they will never accept foreign military on the American continent.
And since this will be a threat to their security I can understand it. Although both, Canada and Mexico, as independent states will have all rightst to act in that direction. With other words, what's legally right, must not always be the right thing to do considering the bigger picture.
Probably the best advice to Ukraine might be declaring neutrality and in parallel getting a security guarantee, that if Russia might ever again start a war against them, NATO will defend the Ukraine even despite the fact that they will not be a member.
Will such a deal be easy to negotiate and achieve? Certainly not, but with some good will of all involved parties it shall still not be absolute utopic......

The example is in this video where they equate NATO with a country like Russia. NATO is not a country but is an agreement that any member country can leave at any time without reprisal form the others. Yet WION treats the two as if they were the same which is just as rediculous as treating a member of a voluntary club as a government organization to which one is bound. .

The other side the host did not say is: A. George H. Bush may have informally promised during meetings with the head of Soviet Union but none formal agreement or treaty was reached and signed or published, like the one between China and the USA "Shanghai Communique" 1972 or later in 1979. B. Well, China the US agreed and signed document(s) with still in existence Soviet Union is no longer here. Even if there was an OFFICIAL agreement signed and published back then between the US and Soviet Union, it still does not apply to what has been going on since the Soviet Union. the country the US or NATO signed any treat or agreement no longer exit.
Ukraine and numerous other former republics of Soviet Union from far east near China and Mongolia to the West of the former Soviet Union are independent countries now. Russia did not replace the Soviet Union. The host makes it like today's Russia is yesterday's Soviet Union. Per that logic, today's China can claim Mongolia and the vast portion of today's far east territory all the way to the Pacific Sea that used to be part of the China's last Dynasty's territory. The conclusion, the host is not only missing the other side of her coin, she is stretching her coin so far that makes no sense except showing how irresponsible or low quality of this India channel is. Focus on why India supposedly a democracy has chosen to stand on the wrong side of history in its recent UN actions. This was Russia/Putin's last straw, and inevitable like the battle of Mahabharat, he is the modern Arjun. The west and US are treacherous weasels who put on a mask of do-goodership but are as evil as the worst of them. Look at their history ripe with racism, expansionism, religous crusades and greed. They have just camouflaged that as "democracy" which has failed miserably anyway. The EU is also disintegrating. Ukranians who want to war with their Russian brothers to join Nato/EU are dumb af, and Putin really was brave to have smacked the western bullies in their face. Dissolve NATO and make truce.

Good analysis as always but I’d like to ask a few questions.
-Why did Russia dissolve the Warsaw Pact? Surely a promise to “not progress eastward” was not a pact of mutual dissolution?
-If Russia was not a regional bully, why would all these neighbors and former allies be so keen on joining a defensive alliance against Russia?
-Didn’t Russia justify the fears of its neighbors, when it invaded Ukraine 10 years ago, annexing Crimea and Donbas?
Russia was allowed to get away with that aggression then and that emboldened them to commit another unjustifiable attack on the sovereignty of Ukraine.
-NATO may not be innocent in all this however, it has expanded by accession; mutual interest and agreement. Russia is trying to do the same by conquest. Isn’t this anachronistic in today’s world?

What are you talking about? It is *far* from 'unbiased'. Here are just a few instances of her bias: Pali shows her own bias when she says NATO ignored Moscow's security buffer claims. Then immediately she shows it again when she denies NATO told the truth when NATO called those claims 'myopic' or 'arrogant'. Moscow's claim really is arrogant, to call it 'myopic' is
actually being too kind to Moscow. But they they responded at all shows that contrary to Palki's claim, NATO did *not* 'ignore' Russia's claim.
But wait! There's more! Palki again shows her bias by uncritically accepting the claim that NATO is a tool of US Imperialism.
Even that is not low enough for Palki, she had to sink lower with using heavily biased language to describe what NATO did when she says, "NATO refused to disband". By choosing this word, 'refused', she paints a dishonest image of NATO as the petulant one here But NATO made the right decision, all those FSU states *do* need NATO protection so they don't end up like Ukraine. But this bias was not enough for her: she had to go deeper into dishonesty and thinly concealed bias by calling this "a stab in the back".

Yes, this video rises a very good point. Just as Hitler was provoked to self-defend by attacking Europe and killing Jewish families by the thousands in gas chambers in 1939, so is India shamelessly provoking Pakistan by having troops right on it's border. The Indian people should reconsider their provocative actions immediately and disband their military to stop threatening Pakistani security interests and avoid forcing that peaceful, innocent nation into an unwanted war. So belligerent of India, it's hard to believe, that they would not even consider the integrity of Pakistan's sphere of influence and how they disturb it. And if anyone doubts that argument he can ask Pakistan's Prime Minister - he will confirm it's all true.

But you have to ask why all these eastern countries wanted to join NATO, and the EU to begin with. They had been subjugated under the Russians during the entire cold war. Which was not much better than being under the Germans in WWII. For Europe, NATO (and the EU) have worked wonderfully at keeping the peace between its members, as well as deterring Russia. Which as we have just witnessed, can't help from invading its neighbors.
NATO will only get stronger. The Germans will rearm, as they have woken up to the reality of Russian aggression. The alliance could very well include Finland and Sweden in the near future. In the end Russia's problems are not NATO - and never were.
