She is a Syrian singer of Al-Atrash family and she is a Druze princess
She was an Arab princess from the Mountain of the Arabs in Southern Syria. Druze is a belief, not a heritage! To be more precise, it’s called ‘Muwahhidun’ (The Unitarian Belief), not Druze. Many adherents prefer not to be called Druze because historically, the term ‘Druze’ was often used in negative contexts.
The term Druze originally comes from the name of a controversial figure, Muhammad bin Ismail al-Darazi, who was an early preacher of the faith. Many Druze people historically disliked being called Druze because al-Darazi’s teachings were considered heretical by the main followers of the faith. Instead, they preferred to be called Muwahhidun (Unitarians), reflecting their core belief in the unity of God.

In this masterpiece, composed by Muhammad Al-Qasabgy, Princess Asmahan completed the music scale multiple times, combined with Eastern & Western elements. That’s magnificent & totally rare. It’s a pity that she passed away in her early thirties. Asmahan (real name: Princess Amal Al-Atrache) was the younger sister of the legendary Farid Al-Atrache. They belonged to a Syrian Druzian noble family. Their grandfather Sultan Pasha Al-Atrache has lead the revolution against the French in Syria & Lebanon, back then. And their father Fahd Al-Atrache was a Qaim Maqam (Acting Governor) during the period of the Ottoman Empire.

One thing that is special about this type of music is the modal changes throughout the song, or what is known as changing from one Maqam (mode) to another. This is where the genius of this music composition lies. Generally, in Western music, it is the harmony that conveys the genius of music, whereas in Middle Eastern music, it is the intricacy of the melody.

This song is a cornerstone in the arabic music. Qasabji was looking for the perfect singer to do this rather of a theory of his which is using western music theory if I'm not mistaken in harmony and he succeeded in easternizing the theory and it gave birth to the peak era of arabic classics. I apologize for butchering the importance of this song on the whole industry.
