Went to see U2 in 87 when they played in Croke Park, The Pogues and The Dubliners were both supporting and did their individual sets, they then both came out and performed The Irish Rover, to say the crowd went nuts would be an understatement. I'd love to see footage of it but alas don't think I will.
God I love this song it was when back in 1987 I found my musical home...being a Welshman it just well.. fell into place...Pogue Mahone..Dros Gymru Gwlad ...Alba..Kernew..
Ronnie Drew is (was) one of the best vocalists ever.... his dulcet tones will follow me to my grave. Sadly missed - any yet not! Sing, Ronnie, sing! Shane is the greatest poet of our time. Cheers fellas!
Ronnie Drew is a legend and his wonderful voice carry's the song throughout he looked like a man who could put a few away but was utterly professional and would not miss a beat. The contrast between him and Shane McGowan' heavy drinking and quite a lack of professionalism drinking wise is rivers wide. May they both rest peacefully .
13 dislikes...sweet jesus, you guys have never been in an irish pub anywhere in the world when this song gets belted out...a classic, great lyrics and this performance is magical...so much talent on one stage..love it..
After i heard this song a Welshman fell in love to this day i still love the Dubs, and the Pogues, but the road travelled always has its casualties. RIP: Ronnie Drew & Phil Chevron. Miss you guys. Al x
Good old banjo medley. I have managed to make a start at Banjo jamming (on a small scale). The Irish music has given me a lot of ideas to entice and encourage the youngsters to take up Banjo playing in the Seychelles..
There was ol' Ronnie Drew who had drunk none too few of the finests of liquors and wines Next to him young Shane Mac who was known to knock back twenty five beers and say "I feel fine" ^^ Saw those lines somewhere on the net once. Fits nicely.
Haha I know the feeling. Being Australian with not a drop of Irish blood in me, my all time favorite music is Irish music. Especially Gaelic Storm (all their songs are upbeat and fun and really about getting your drink on and having a great time) and The Dubliners ft The Pogues. Though my mates are still puzzled to this day about my lack of Irish blood. Even my Irish mate swears I have at least 80% Irish blood in me. A bloke can dream I guess lol Happy St Pats Day to ya!!
I'm from Belgrade ( Serbia ) and my favourite bend is " The Orthodox Celts". My town was established by Celts, too. Later it was called Singidunum ( Roman Empirre )
Omg ...you say it is?? , jesus , we can't have that when good music is played , you are right we must stop this foul lipsinking Its so good you are here to save us from this , you are my new hero ...I want your babies
I recall to this day a true life story when a Greek folk entered a cab somewhere in Ireland, I think Dublin, and the cabman having heard of the Greek origin, besides giving his greetings since he had been in Greece before and loved it, turned back or to the side, and said: "Oh well, mate, it's like our nations are of the smallest in the world, we are no real threat to anybody, we never mean no harm to anybody, yet all surrounding us just won't let us live in Peace." A true life story. Peace around the World. Greetings from Greece.
WOWWWWW!!! Finally another live version. You always know true musicians when they sound the same on any stage. I saw Shaun MacGowan two months ago and he still kickss ass.
Rip : Eamonn Campbell (29 November 1946 - 18 October 2017) Joined the Dubliners in 1987 (until his passing) and it was at his suggestion that the Dubliners work with The Pogues in the 1980s. He also produced all of the Dubliners' albums from 1987 onwards, as well as albums for many other Irish artists, including Foster and Allen, Brendan Shine, Daniel O'Donnell and Paddy Reilly. He toured with three other ex-Dubliners as "The Dublin Legends" after the Dubliners name was retired with the death of founding member Barney McKenna in 2012
Irish LEGENDS both The Dubliners & The Pogues, grew up in Sheffield listening to then with my 5 siblings. Our parents were listening & watching Brendan Shine & other Irish Artists at our Irish Social Club just up road from Sheffield City centre with their friends on a weekend, great times & lifelong friendships.. All The Dubliners are now playing their music in Heaven now..Went to watch 7 Drunken Nights-The Dubliners Story in March '22,loved it soooo much, brought back memories of childhood listening to Dubliners with siblings & our parents..Can't wait to see Fairytale Of New York Christmas Show in 4 days at Sheffield City Hall, the toes will be tapping & we will be singing along.. Rest in peace Dubliners, you were & always will have a place in Irish History & our hearts along with Shane McGowan & Sinéad O Connor .. Rest in peace Shane, his good friend Sinéad,lost both Irish legends this year within a few months of each other, heaven will certainly be lively! Rest in peace Kirsty McColll always loved your voice,Fairytale Of New York has always one of my all time favourite Christmas songs, bitter sweet now. Written by Jan Farrell using Alex's phone as the Samsung he bought for her birthday died 2 days before it's 6 month birthday!! Samsung have it back!
I remember this being the first Pogues song I heard, as I was too impatient as a kid to get through Dirty Old Town due to its slow tempo. Still know all the words to both!
@gareththejack Nope, this is the studio version from the start to the end. Funny how whistle and fiddle can't be played at the same time, so the Dubliners's guitarist takes the whistle so it makes sense :)
Brilliant! And in honour of International Cassette Store Day last Saturday (look it up) I was playing my 1987 double cassette The Dubliners 25 years Celebration. Better without Shane's lack-lustre attempt at lip-syncing - try saying all that when you're pissed. Bless him! What a performance!
Then the ship struck a rock, oh Lord what a shock !!! The bulkhead was turned right over ... Turned nine times around and the poor ol' dog was drowned ... I'M THE LAST OF THE IRISH ROVER !!!!
From a dude sitting here in Jakarta, Indonesia... sometimes I play this to drown out the call to prayer. Slainte!
Ronnie Drew, a true legend of Irish music. Two of my favourite bands combining. Brilliant.
Of all the things technology has brought us, this is some of the best.
I'm french and i have a very respect fot irlande. Irish people proud and brave I like Ireland and their culture
The country of France hosts some Celtic culture in its far west and north-west, no ?
Shane is the only man from Tipperary who talks with an English accent but sings with a Dublin accent. Pure poguetry
Every bit a musical legend regardless of what you thought of him. RIP Shane McGowan, the music world has lost an iconic, talented man
Absolute magic. A masterpiece.

Now that would be great to see but 87 is a grainy year for cameras .
Haven't seen too many bands on TOTP that had the whole place bouncing. The Pogues & The Dubliners are legends.
One of the best renditions of this song ever. So awesome to see Ronnie and Shane on the same stage. RIP Ronnie Drew.
Love this song so much...cheers from Germany...
RIP Shane ❤

I love the dubliners i also love the pogues best of both worlds
outstanding, love them ❤❤
RIP Ronnie Drew, you were a legend mate.
So little time ......so much Guinness
An absolute classic!
Ingenuity. On another note, I ponder when the last day Shane was sober haha! Lyrically and melodically tremendous, pure Irishness!
I can understand why, what with his having talents and successfully putting them into two bands and written songs that will be with us forever,
this song makes me want to drink...lots.
Cheers. I'll drink to that.
Steve Wildes
+Stillas85 Have a good one buddy!
+Ron G well thank fuck its friday tommorow!
jupp, take a close look to the vocalist of the pouges, now, after 20 years, cheers, agre best drinking song ever ;)
Very sad they are aöö gone.
Maybe they play in heaven together.
Shane McGowan for one is still alive bro, just, im sure more are. The years of drink and drugs have taken their toll on Shane.
RIP Ronnie Drew - made me proud to be Irish.
