- I had to feel a little sorry for these two guys because hardly anybody put any money in their tins. Operating a street organ (draaiorgel) seems like a hard way to make a living.
Fortunately, they dont't do this for a living. It's their hobby. The money you put in, is used for maintaining the organs.
I'm not sure if that is the case. There are people who use street organs to make a living. Next time I'm in Utrecht I'll have to ask them about it.
Okay, please do; I'm curious about the answers. As far as I know, the profession of organ-grinder has extinct in the Netherlands.
RoelofR You are right I am from The Netherlands and it is only their hobby and the money does go to keep the instruments in good condition
I spoke to the guy last Saturday and asked him if he had a job or made a living from the organs. It's possible he didn't understand me correctly because I speak Dutch with a Yorkshire accent, but he said from the music.
I lived in goes in the 1980s and on market days in the summer there used to be the same little old hunched back guy with his draaiorgel shaking his tin.

Exactly. If I were there I would be rooted to the spot listening to this because I love these old street organs and the music is beautiful.
I grew up in a city where one of these was operated, they are obnoxiously loud in person. forget having a conversation anywhere near them, and other than the novelty of the device, and the tourists it attracts, for many of us locals it's nothing special. We've all seen it a million times over.
Problem with the man is that he's shaking the thing at the wrong speed. You have to shake the tip-can in the same rythm, he's just making noise now.

Every time I went to Utrecht this guy was there. I don't remember every seeing any street organs in Rotterdam though. Perhaps he's expanding his business.

If any of those pillocks walking past with studious ignore were asked if street organs should be banned, the response would an indignant NEVER! That's part of our heritage.

Yes. I always give money when I listen to street organs. I usually do the same with street entertainers/musicians as well.

as familie and friends from those two i can confirm this is just a hobby and it isnt a living, the past it was.
To be honest, I wouldn't give my money to anybody begging in this manner. If I decide to "tip" an organ grinder/operator, I will do so at my own discretion and not because somebody happens to be shaking a tin at me... Aside from this, it's a nice organ.
Hi Chris. Thanks for commenting. The people who tip always do so at their own discretion. The tin just provides them with somewhere to place their coins if they wish to do so. In my experience the people with the tins are not very "in your face about it", they just rattle their tins in time to the music. I don't see this as begging. When I encounter beggars in the street it's different. They are in your face. They just walk up to you and ask for cash. They never get a penny from me. I usually just say something like, "Lo siento. No hablo engles/holandes." They generally don't speak Spanish, so it stops them in their tracks (in Spain I use Dutch).
The big difference between Dutch Organ owners and beggars is beggars just want money and offer nothing in return. The people with Dutch Organs work for their money. It's hard work pushing an organ from one location to the next (they generally aren't allowed to stay in the same spot for too long) and it costs them money to buy the fuel for their vehicles and, in some cases, for the generators that run the bellows. I always tip them because they are offering an experience (cheerful music) in exchange for the money they receive.
I think it's a nice Dutch organ as well. The guy who owns it has several more. I've only seen one of them, but it was pretty good too.
Perhaps it's just the camera angle that makes the "chuggers" look a lot worse than they really appear.
I know owning an organ isn't a cheap hobby. Currently I am designing/building my own 52-keyless organ...

It really pisses me off to see aggressive begging by waving a cup in my face. If they had a cup of the ground I might've put in a coin or two but NOT with aggressive begging. NEVER!
