True story: Worked with this older white male in his 60's... Nice, extremely gentle, well spoken, and just warm... One day at work, this song got played and he started rapping along, word for word! The man rapped the entire song. An old white guy....from Wisconsin! I grew up in the era where I heard the EPMD cover (you should listen to it... Very well polished version) but knew of this one because I was a BreakDancer in the late 90's...I believe this is the very first rap song ever televised... Hence the age and obvious sort of strange naivete hanging in the air... Also the style was sorta still in that phase where it was what we called verbal sparring with a rhyme scheme and thus the almost one dimensional cadence... Hopefully if I'm wrong someone will correct me about it being the first on TV... Most people don't even know that rapping was one of the four pillars of hip hop along with tagging (graffiti), breakdancing, and turntablism aka DJ'ing... It was a way for inner city youths like myself to hash out drama so it wouldn't come to fists or weapons... Well, at least that was the aim in the beginning...I grew up in a later generation where breakdancing had already gone back underground even among the inner-city kids in America but had become a thing across the rest of the globe... Actually, what would trip you out is to watch a well organized battle like Battle of the Year's music they play during dance battles... It's a ton of funk and r & b electric breaks that you'd dig... Oh and by Battle of the Year, I don't mean the movie....I mean every year there's a big international breakdancing dance battle and watch one of those lol
it was the first rap song to be a commercial success. i personally feel it opened the door for a lot of african americans into the music industry as well.
i am so excited for you to see some of the steps it took to get to something like kendrick lamar or any lyricist. i really am so excited for you to get to things like jazz rap, stuff like the low end theory by tribe called quest and to pimp a butterfly by k-dot. can not wait to see where this journey takes you. it is going to be a blast!
This is going to be an interesting series. Going through hip hop chronologically is not only going to expose eras, but it is going to organize some of the callbacks. Hip hop is very referential, and people who jump into it in 2022 have quite a learning curve. Starting from the beginning you get a better understanding, and how you absorb new entries into the field changes. Btw, my mother knows Rapper's Delight word for word, and if I concentrate so do I.
Good afternoon from New England....Man this is a blast from the past...I was 10 when this song came out and I must have played it 100's of times and really bugged my parents lol...S.H.G. are one of handful of geniuses hip hop acts that have inspired 1000's of rappers and even Numetal bands as well..Great song..Peace from the Northeast...
It was the first Hip Hop song (known as rap at the time) to get national radio play. Many of us outside of New York just thought it was a fun novelty song in the vain of Rudy Ray Moore comedy and StaggerLee blues story telling. This was before sampling, but after "toasting" MCs over a break beat played on two turn tables.
Wow, I Love this song the only Rap music I can to listen all day!!!! clean no dirty words pure voice and deep !!! Loved you , your honest , I wished there more reactor like you!!!
Please react to the full 14 Minute version od Rappers Delight by the Sugarhill Gang. Everyone learned the words to the 7 min version. The 14 min version was played at school dances and clubs and at the skating rinks. Yes I was able to sing along. I was 15 when this song was released and memorized the words. I also remember alot of the wors to the 14 min version. When people called into the Radio stations they would say that Hip hop Song. This was part of the reason the Genre became known as Hip Hop.
Great video as always man, love the range of music you check out! Twenty One Pilots performed new versions of some of their old songs, including Stressed Out this week for MTV Unplugged and they sound totally different to the originals, using live looping, layering vocals and they even sampled the audience, would love to hear your thoughts!
Ok look…..who is this Howie person you keep referring to? We’ve never seen him! This was such a fun song...the funk is what drew me in. I’ll admit, I know every word. I want to see you in that outfit..😂! Also, I don’t think you’ve ever done a Chris Whitley review….he was so great! I’m officially recommending Scrapyard Lullaby or Kick the Stones.
Big Bang Hank took Grandmaster CAZ rhymes. CAZ gave him a sheet of rap lyrics when he came up with and gave it to him. He later rapped it on this record. He even says his name C A S A N O V A F L Y.
True. He gave or let him borrow the sheet of lyrics. Big Bang used them. Now if the song didn't blow up and make history, would we have known that fact Kaz still claims that fact but Big Bank is not here to defend himself about that fact.
It was a great one but not political or meaningful - rap is more lyrically meaningful than this. Grandmaster flash would be more insightful to meaningful hip hop

Yes. I'm exactly your age and I know EVERY SINGLE WORD. lololol. This was the coolest thing I ever heard at 9 years old. Roller skating.....
Back to the roots of RAP! How great isn't this, so much good vibes and energy!

I agree!
I don't remember ever hearing the verse about shitty food at a friend's, that's hilarious.

i recommend you do FIRST TIME HEARING REACTIONS, not only reviews
i agree
what a classic that was in 79'.
I still to this day, know all the words to the song, the one thing about this is this video was done in one take, so what you see is free styling.
I can sing EVERY WORD!
Do it!
Had this 12” vinyl
The word is that's not a sample. That's a band recreating the song. Also the story of Hank stealing his verse is just as legendary as this song.
He didn't steal it. He ask to borrow it. Now if the song didn't blow up like it did, would we even have known that story?
Love the content 💕
I call my mothers little words of wisdom, “Bobisms”.- The older I get I realize how little I know.
I'd love to see you react to ClownCore's Earth. It's amazing technical skill yet hilarious.

And MS, why didn't you groove along with it on your PIANO? I was expected you to play the bass line and guitar part.

Hey, if music is FIRE, it's GOOD! Throw the GENRE out the window. Get FUNKY!!!
Please check out berried alive!!
Dude, it’s 45 years old. Give em some slack for a one take performance.
