FIXING A BIG PROBLEM The LEAKING FLAT ROOF / Glamping update

  • This roof has been a challenge. To get this far and still discover a leak was disheartening. Hopefully now it will be resolved and the water barrier membrane will do the job.
Sometimes the simple looking jobs can be the hardest yet this will be satisfying when it works.
Thanks for watching and all your support.

I feel sorry you’ve had to deal with the aggravation of all this unfinished business. Great you have taken it in stride…..serves no purpose to stew. Now is the time to focus on the positive and not let circumstances suck the joy from the possibilities of your soon to be amazing home on your gorgeous land. You’ve got that figured out, and you are skillful and hardworking . I will enjoy watching your continued progress !

I truly wish you well with this new product layer on the roof. It really is hard to push ahead, and be forced to re-do someone else's job when they should be the ones re-doing it. I understand, however, that you have made the right choice to put it behind you and do it right yourself. You're setting a good example for all DIY-ers who may find themselves in a similar situation. I hope the weather cooperates and allows you to get this done as soon as you can!

My husband noticed some things that the roofer was doing, that would later cause an issue, he even specifically said, leak. I am very sorry I just did not put in comment, but did not want to be "that person" :( Then maybe you could have at least check out what he noticed and it would not have gotten this far. If he were home right now I would ask him what he saw.

You might want to consider doing the same steps up and over the top on the inside of the parapet. It is an area often overlooked, and with the amount of work and destruction done on the parapet it could easily create a path for water intrusion to run down the side and under the roof membrane. Not necessary to do the outside of the parapet.

I am watching all of your hard work and thinking that I might do things a bit differently and go to plan B. . By the third or fourth time of roof leaking, I would be putting me a roof over the roof/ terrace. It would still be a nice place to be outside in the fresh air but it would not rain on this pesky roof. It would make a super party covered terrace with grill, pizza oven, party lights, and anything else. An outdoor kitchen maybe for too hot to cook inside days.
That’s what you do. You make us dream about this place. lol!

I manage to convince myself a little thicker is better and wind up with three or four extra bags. Then...Because I'm worried about coverage, I forget to include overlap in the mesh and wind up three feet short on the final application.

In Israel there are bituminous sheets for sealing roofs. The tarpaulins are made of tar with a mesh and a thermal coating from the kamesh that reduces heat transfer to the roof of the house. The sheets are applied by soldering with a gas burner. Such a sheet lasts at least 15 years and even more. A layer of light concrete can be made on the sheet and you will have complete silence from long-term leaks.

It's so easy to feel overwhelmed when things go wrong (like after all that time, cost, and effort spent to have your contractors work on the roof and then having it leak!) Most of us have experienced that kind of setback, in one way or another. But not you, Andy! When you're knocked down, you just seem to pick yourself up, dust yourself off and then you go figure out how to solve the problem! Thank you for your videos. They make me feel as if I can find a way to be more competent (like you clearly are) when I see how well you handle the various problems that arise! Keep up the good work.
