This Video is about a service call i had on a Daikin / Mcquay chiller that was surging.
It was a Mcquay model PEH / WSC centrifugal chiller from a little while back. it had many problems with the chiller and the chiller system that lead to the chiller surging violently until it eventually seized the centrifugal compressor, and required an overhaul. after we completed the overhaul there were a number of underlying problems we had to correct in order to get the machine to work properly.
Do Your chiller maintenance!
This fundamental applies to Trane chillers, Daikin chillers, York chillers, And Every other centrifugal chiller in the industry.
This video is for:
Building engineers
HVAC technicians
Mechanical engineers
Aspiring chiller technicians
HVAC contractors looking to get into chillers
Someone who wants to learn more about how centrifugal chillers work.
If You are trying to learn more about chillers the following channels will help you tremendously with learning the ins and outs of chillers, as well as walking you through service calls on these machines:

Awesome stuff John
Glad you like it brother!
If the approach was high on the condenser, was the pressure difference across the barrel high too? Causing insufficient heat transfer, laminar flow due to restrictions?
@@NROhvac That is a possibility, too much water flow could cause a slightly higher approach. However the Delta T (Temp difference) being high tells me that the flow was poor, and that we had ton of heat being rejected into the water, because the refrigerant has more time in contact with the water, even though it wasnt transferring well. hope this makes sense.
When we get into the troubleshooting i plan on spending 4-6 hours going back and forth with guys on interpreting the readings, and how you can tell the difference between a Heat Transfer / Charge/ and Flow issue.
@ this is crucial for me, thank you. So what you’re saying is if the pressure drop across the barrel checks out good, and we have a high delta, we can assume restrictions?
@@NROhvac typically the pressure drop will be low if you have a high delta, but it all goes off of the design. It would be low because you have a restriction, and the water flow / Velocity is slowed down.
If the tubes are clean, (Less velocity = less pressure drop = Less GPM = higher Delta T) because of the water coming into contact with the refrigerant longer, and exchanges more heat..
If the tubes are clean, (High velocity = Higher Pressure Drop = More GPM = Lower Delta T because of the water coming into contact with the water for a shorter period of time, and exchanges less heat.)
If the tubes are dirty, and the flow is correct, (Normal Velocity = Normal Pressure Drop = Normal GPM = Normal or low delta T) because even though the flow is correct, the water and the refrigerant are not actually transferring heat. Thats where checking the approach comes in, and why logging the entire machine is so important. In the last scenario, the pressure drop tells us flow is good, the delta tells us that we aren't transferring that much heat, and the approach tells us we aren't transferring heat.
There are many reasons you could be having a heat transfer issue. Could be low on charge, could be fouled tubes. could be too much oil in the Evap, could be a divider plate gasket. The rest of the log sheet tells you where the true problem lies.
Another great video John!
@@micahstephens7563 thanks brother!
Greats video! I work at a hospital and maintain the chillers to a certain point. I've had my chiller surge before and it actually helped to put more load on her. Our cond approach is a tad high at 6.5. She's a champ tho
Nice man!
What brand machines are they?
That’s a major case of tower neglect 😳. Thanks for the video!
For sure man, the worst I have ever seen to this day
i already hear that coz im an operator of a chiller sometimes the cause of surging is a high temp in condenser side and it will rattle if an air passes through the condenser system
An expensive lesson to be sure. Thanks for posting.
Your profile photo is hilarious lmao
Great videos brother
Thanks brother! We are planning some free live stuff for the guys, then I will be posting some more again after that🤙
Good stuff. Thanks for sharing
For sure brother, keep up the good work with your channel too!
Can you elaborate more on the chemical issue how did you solve it and what chemical did you use. Thanks!
correcting the chemical issues with the water? or Acid cleaning?
I love the video... awesome...
Glad you like it man, we’re going to try and do a lot more of these as time allows!
Great video. Thank you for sharing
For sure man
I thought that the surge was going to sound like the distress call from Alien.
😂
NO way this customer had a chemical co treating that water. Thats insane that they smoked a centrifugal due to nothing but poor "maintenance" if you can even say they were doing any to begin with. Nasty job to walk into.
@@acmekanik9135 for sure man, it was gnarly
Any air in the machine?
No sir! Thankfully she’s running good, and has been running good for the last couple seasons, but just sucks when customers don’t think about getting things taken care of properly
What is the karaoke text good for except making an otherwise great video nearly impossible to watch? RUclips already has subtitles one can turn on and off according to personal preferences. This hardbaked flickering text is incredibly annoying and doesn't provide any additional value or information. Please don't do this.
agreed. it’s a very tiktok kinda low brow thing to do. i don’t get it either.
I’m half deaf, so cc”s are nice lol but I can cut them for future videos if they are a pain in the rear? Do you think any cc’s are good?
@@princesswalt4010 you think pull the cc’s all together?
@@TheChillerGuysHub I don’t know how the cc is generated in RUclips, but there is the cc button you hit to get cc when you need it (when it’s available). My suggestion is to investigate that option so that its available for hearing impaired folks. I work in the video industry, and cc is metadata that is part of the video, you just need a tv to superimpose it… kind of like the cc button in RUclips. And keep up the good work with the videos! Chillers a fun!
@@princesswalt4010 A few people said they don't like them, so I will be pulling them from the future videos. I have done some with, and some without, and I plan on keeping them OUT in all future videos. Its actually more work to add them, because I edit them and add them manually when I am editing the videos, So pulling them out actually makes things easier on my end.
I am Fairly new to the video work, and I am Still learning how to put things together in a way that is the most helpful for everyone.
I am a chiller mechanic by trade, and I am trying to learn how to do the video thing as time goes on, but I don't know anyone that does it for a living to bounce ideas off of, or tell me when something is a bad idea.
Would you be willing to shoot me an email, and let me pick your brain a little on how I can make things better for the guys? I am not sure if there is a project I can help you with in return, but if I can help you in any way I will. My Email is on my channel, otherwise if youtube doesn't pull it from this comment, its: John.clemmer@capitoldiagnostics.com
If your too busy, I get it, just figured id ask the question, I am always trying to learn more. Thanks for all of the feedback, its really helpful, and thanks tuning in man! have a great rest of your week!
very nice giving the why and how's, But for next videos can you please STOP with the captions. It hurts the eyes as it is blinking and moving as you talk, you do not need this on the screen, just talk your way through the video. It's very very annoying to watch your videos with that moving captions things.
@@ThumperKJFK yeah the guys mentioned that they hated them, I haven’t and won’t do it anymore, thanks for the feedback. I was experimenting with this for a bit, but not doing it anymore.
I am not buying a bad flow switch the machine should have unloaded when the condenser pressure got to a certain threshold. Just like the evaporator temp sensor will shut down the chiller if you lose chilled water flow
@Billyflanagan9657
I’m not going to be running though the config in a video on RUclips, this was from a few years back, I do remember having to go through the config in the old 200 panel, however, I can’t remember every single thing that we did in the controller, but that’s not something I’m going to put on youtube so some guy can fumble around and ruin their machine.
Did you see the whole video, she had no flow also, you see how bad the tower was worst one I have seen to date.. these are wonderful machines, but they are murdered a lot unfortunately..
There’s is no setting for chiller to unload on the Series 209 MTech controls. This could potentially make the problem worse by closing the inlet guide vanes and increasing lift across impeller
@@rickmcelwee705 what about the 4 way valve? you can use that to adjust the timing? is that what you mean or no?
@rickmcelwee705 Rick I think you mean decreasing lift across the impellar with the vanes closed. The only way to increase the lift is to get the condenser pressure down and the evaporator temperature at design
Why Do so many Customers Neglect their Machines?
Because they hire cheap inexperienced maintenance guys to handle stuff.
I agree, and they want to save $1 to get 50% off 5x the price lol
