I’m putting together a bunch of demos for drawing the hands. I want to know what poses and variations you want to see. Reply to this comment to vote for one of these or suggest another: Holding Objects, Fists, Foreshortened Hands, Female Hands, Cartoon Hands.
Holding Objects and Foreshortened Hands. Probably foreshortened hands are more preferable. I find cartoon hands on one hand really interesting (since simplification sometimes helps to understand structure/gesture/appeal better) but on the other hand kinda... too easy. I guess more complicated topics would be a little bit more useful, 'cause they are harder to study on your own. Oh, yeah, and i really wanna to see hands interacting with each other, like holding hands and locked fingers.
Here's the biggest tip for everyone I can offer: Block out your shapes first and look at the angles of the shape. Don't detail until it looks fantastic with only a few shapes
He emphatizes the perspective like a gesture drawing does And he attenuates the form tridimentionality showing the "around", very suddle, but With a lot of helpful tips to make dynamic drawings in general,Thank you proko for bringing this talentful man!!!❤️
@Proko, please do more of those with him. I actually am not an artist (yet) and I never drawn anything other than frustrating doodles, but I'm finally learning and practicing it correctly and the way Steve draws, his shading process with cross hatching and the way he explained the shapes, etc was very helpful. One of the best shape and gesture breakdown I've seen so far. I mean in a broad way, not hand related.
Very illuminating. I really like how he talks about designing the drawing - this is informed by his anatomical knowledge - its what frees him from merely drawing what he sees.
Extremely helpful. I think the biggest issue I have with anatomy, and not just the hands, is the design invention of it. Too many times i go into "detail overload", drawing what I think i see and never considering what to include and not include, and how to approach my line outside of contour
I enjoyed this entire video, but, strangely, the drawing theory that Steve began at 24:50 was one of my favorite snippets. In addition to that, I write exclusively with fountain pens on a daily basis, but when drawing traditional it's usually graphite, Conté Pierre Noir, a Windsor & Newton brush for inking, etc...filling up a sketchbook of just my fountain pen has always been on my artist bucket list (so to speak). This video fuels me into making that happen. Thanks Steve & Stan.
Very much appreciated this "show and tell!" Wonderful communicator. Learned something new. Loved Steve's gestures and his wording describing what he was doing and why. Thank you Steve! :)
After listening to Mr. Houston’s interview I was curious what kind of teacher he would be. And after watching this lesson I was not let down, he is amazing. I can see why you have such a high opinion of him, I only wish that more taught with his style.
4:21 darkenning 8:19 2nd hand demo 9:40 about wrist as wedges 11:22 hand become wrist 11:54 back of the hand 13:00 finger shapes 15:57 breaking contour 20:00 next fist demo
I could watching him doing this all day! What he's saying is quite deep, and interesting. Like there's meaning to every stroke, not just to make it pretty. Maybe it's because I'm such a beginner here.
Thank you for yet another wonderful video! It has helped me understood more on how to approach drawing hands. Would love to see how to tackle drawing fingers in a video since I am quite weak at drawing fingers and the joints..
How to lay out and remember (think?) about the underlying structure of the hand and understand it so that you can draw it from any direction, position. or pose.
It feels like I'm learning from Optimus Prime. lol. I really like his voice. And I also like the philosophy that he has on his drawings. It's not like one of those Tutorials on Proko channel. It's not about just how you draw hands. Or anatomy of hand. That's what makes this vid special I guess.
Steve Huston thanks to a very nice expression. And Proko, thank you. You've created such an opportunity for us. I need a camera and a tripod. Can you tell me your brand and models?
Thanks for the demo. Does the direction of the hatching line matter? Mr. Huston does his from upper left to lower right. Can I do it from lower left to upper right? (on the same drawings in the demo)
bzwatching For hatching, either make all your lines follows the form, or follow the light. In the first example (still watching) he goes left down right because that's the way the light is shining down as well.
Tapa Hoover I think it's also because he's drawing with his left hand. Drawing diagonal from up left to low right is more comfortable for the wrist and arm than the diagonal up right to low left.
Hi Stan, thanks for posting this video. I am curious about the camera set up that you have to record Steve's sketching. What do you use and how do you set it up?
So you're telling me don't use white out pen for highlights, use white pencil or the same as Sir Huston is? I need to learn to properly learn highlights.
I have such an issue with hands. steve needs to write a book. art book. I'll have to also need to study your anatomy of hands. I am in the process of buying figure drawing author is hampton..something like that name.

Foreshortened Hands! Super fun :)
Foreshortened Foreshortened Foreshortened :D
Hands that have pressure applied to (for balance).
I would like to see a doggy,a missionary and maybe a spoon

this. I didn't realize I would mirror subtle angles into the opposite direction if I didn't slow down and make sure the shape block in was nice.
I would love to just chat with Steve. He is so wise, skilled and funny. Thanks Proko for sharing this and the interview with us.
Oh man chatting with Steve would be a dream. Could talk not only about art but also lifting! That guy was SWOLE in his prime!
He just like me man
22:32
"and its going to help me feel the, uh, *_'go-awayness'_* quality."
Beautiful hands.
indeed, i feel the same on that part

you can tell this man is an expert, and hes amazing
Steve was a sub in several classes at Art Center in 1985-86. Never forgot his instruction.
@Proko, please do more of those with him. This is like improvisational jazz of drawing. Steve is amazing
Very much appreciated this "show and tell!" Wonderful communicator. Learned something new. Loved Steve's gestures and his wording describing what he was doing and why. Thank you Steve! :)
Honestly Hutton provides the best learning videos I've ever seen
Amazing video! Not an anatomy tutorial but it really helps you understand not only how hands work, but our bodies in general
Absolutely amazing drawing and explanation! Please, please make more videos with him. I really love how he explains motivation behind his strokes.
I love this video. Finally, someone addresses suggesting values via lines. Crosshatching is one of my favorite things.

dias.piano never so many hands puns, NEVER!!
What You See ? so many puns ... hands down.
What You See ? Well I gota hand it to you.
What You See ? I always love it when an artist lends a helping hand.
I could watching him doing this all day! What he's saying is quite deep, and interesting. Like there's meaning to every stroke, not just to make it pretty. Maybe it's because I'm such a beginner here.
Bravo Proko, Mr Huston est un technicien et un artiste remarquable. Chapeau pour ce tuto.
Steve Huston speaks such beautiful truths
I like how the fingers he draws look like actual fingers...I can't get mine to look genuine. I struggle with drawing knuckles.
i came in trying to understand hand drawing and i got more on understanding drawing as an artist.
Thanks Proko, I appreciate so much this amazing teacher.
Thank you!
This is very useful!
This video actually gave me a lot of tips to improve. I recommend to watch it some couple of times
Your video is very helpful in term of explaining the plane and how to utilize it in a right way! THANKS A LOT

Thank you for yet another wonderful video! It has helped me understood more on how to approach drawing hands. Would love to see how to tackle drawing fingers in a video since I am quite weak at drawing fingers and the joints..

Those are beautiful hands.
Worth it weight in gold! Great video
How to lay out and remember (think?) about the underlying structure of the hand and understand it so that you can draw it from any direction, position. or pose.
Looking foward to you coming out with lessons about legs and feet. :-)
It feels like I'm learning from Optimus Prime. lol.

Excellent. Lots to ponder.
love this tutorial it´s so"fist"icated
To me it is always weird seeing somebody drawing with his or her left hand :D But it was definetly helpful! Thanks for this and for upcoming videos ^^
I'm left handed and I was surprised to realize that Steve Huston is also a fellow left-hander, haha.
I wish you could made a unit about legs anatomy.Proko, are you going to made legs anatomy in next times?

Based Steve Huston
" Mmmmmm! Oatmeal paper you say?" Asked the goat that's also an artist.
Awesome class!
The model of the pen is WATERMAN EXPERT BLACK LACQUER GT with EXTRA FINE nib.
this is really helpful!! :')
I notice that a lot of drawing artists do practice stokes above the page first. Sort of like a golfer taking practice swings. Is this a best practice?
which kind of camera do you use to record these videos?
Thank you!!
Thanks for the demo. Does the direction of the hatching line matter? Mr. Huston does his from upper left to lower right. Can I do it from lower left to upper right? (on the same drawings in the demo)

Hi Stan, thanks for posting this video. I am curious about the camera set up that you have to record Steve's sketching. What do you use and how do you set it up?
It's a GoPro setup that Stan built. He used the same setup in the Stephen Silver video.
I love this video
So you're telling me don't use white out pen for highlights, use white pencil or the same as Sir Huston is? I need to learn to properly learn highlights.
Anyone knows the name of the pen he used, or any similar pen for sketching ?
Peter Jackson he says it right in the beginning bro.
2:30 Never tough of that!
Good Job! :)
