So which one do you prefer? Also heard the infrastructure is much better in Malysia, I live in Dumaguete Philippines, I might be moving to Malysia once things open up again.
Yes, the infrastructure is very good compared to almost all of SE Asia. Thanks for watching and commenting. It helps our business grow. Feel free to subscribe to my channel if the mood strikes. Best, Dan
Mr. Paul, just curious, what do you dislike about Dumageut? I was thinking about it for retirement.
My wife studied in Dumaguete's Silliman University. I don't care much about "infrastructure", I prefer a comparably simple life.
U guys came from countries which has good infrastructure so why do go in the same place which has more infrastructure. I thought foreigners wanted or looking for for a place which is simple living but comfortable and far from rat race. That's all matters.
I support this channel btw.
The infrastruture and healthcare are much better in Malaysia.
Congratulation for a good looking companion? I find your video quite informative, I like the choices of lifestyle and the narration of what could be important for a person wanting to live abroad. One question, do you carry your passport at all times when living in these countries? My assumption is that you would? Malaysia indeed is a very strict place to live I assume? I am for it if it is, I prefer a government where has good policies and are enforced, the fact that alcohol isn't allowed doesn't bother me and I have seen images of Malaysia that are very clean another plus in my desire for visiting there. Thanks for the video.
We do not carry our passports. But we keep a picture on our phones so show if asked. But we are never asked. Malaysia is not strict. The police have never stopped me there nor asked any quuestions of me. They have alcohol in Malaysia for the tourists, local Indians, and local Chinese. It is ols in 7-11 and grocery stores and in bars and restaurants.
Another great ๐ video!
Thanks for the visit Mio.
Very nice comparison between the Philippines and Malaysia. My wife being from the Philippines I have live there for over a year and half and visit there many times. She used to work in Singapore. So both Singapore and Malaysia are on our visit list of countries we want to visit. You have convince me even more to visit Malaysia. So that will be on our travel destinations next year when we go home to the Philippines. Just one comment. I know you are talking about find love overseas and staying overseas but if you bring your spouse to the USA and get them an American Citizenship, then you will have no problem traveling anywhere in Asia except for North Korea. This is a solution if you find love earlier before you retire and your spouse lives in the USA with you. I just wanted to share that option so people will know. My wife is a duel American and Filipino citizen and we have no problem traveling.
Yes. The American passport travels nicely. Almost as nicely as a Japanese passport. Thanks for sharing.
Great stuff! Could you do a comparison between say Indonesia and Malaysia please? Appreciated! Iโm looking to move back to Asia as soon as traveling resumes!
Coming soon!
Come to malaysia.

Weather was never mentioned, which is More bearable?
They are fairly similar. But you would need to check by city. The Philippines is slightly more moderate because the towns are primarily all on the water and the ocean moderates temperatures somewhat. Thanks for commenting. You help our business grow. Please subscribe if you like, Best, Dan
Malaysia is hot and sticky everywhere because they do not get any fresh ocean winds, which Philippines do get. On the other hand, Malaysia is also out of the typhoon alley, on which Philippines unfortunately is a major bowling pin. Rainy seasons in both countries mean just that. It rains, insessantly. Everything is wet, nothing dries unless in an air conditioned room. Sunshine, being tropical, dries everything quickly, but also burns your skin. The locals stay as much in the shade as possible. Only dumb foreigners and they coerced companions spend time in the sunshine wilfully. :)
Malaysia tourist visa 90 days then you can only get a two month visa extension for 200rm. After 5 months you have too leave Malaysia.
I have never bothered to get the extension Paul. I just pop out for a week or two to Thailand or somewhere else and come back into Malaysia. 90 more free days every single time. No exceptions. Maybe you need to try not getting the extension? Thanks for watching and commenting. It helps our business grow. Feel free to subscribe to my channel if the mood strikes. Best, Dan
Only that in opposition to the Philippines you'll find a lot of people in Malaysia, who don't or hardly speak English.

recommend Taiwan for Budget Retirees
1. Public Health care are rake No.1 around the world
2. Safety - 1 of the safest country in the world (the newest data that i found is 2015 - 0.8 per 100,000 ppl )
3. cost of living, depend on your life style, but since we are talking about Budget, in Taiwan can be as low as $1000 USD per month and still have reasonably good life style
4. expats - there are fewer expats in Taiwan, since most of the westerners doesn't know about it, but English is not a problem, most of the people here in Taiwan can speak English, even if they don't they will find someone who can speak English to help out
there are lot more to discover for your self, come and see it with your own eyes

Not sure when is your data, but Taiwan has ranked the 1st since 2019

I saw the article that rank Malaysia the world no.1 health care in 2019, but the new article of 2020, rank Portugal the world no.1 health care, and the no.1 last year didnโt even make it into top 5!!! Which can only mean, the ranking is not accurate! Could be paid article!

Very interesting comparison. How about climate?
Overall, it is slightly cooler in Philippines. Because most people live within a few kilometers of the ocean.
As a vegetarian, Philippines isn't a good choice as far as restaurants. If you cook at home many local vegetable markets make it easier.
True. I am too. :-)
A big plus for the Philippines is English is widely spoken there.
True.
Hey Dan. As a fellow American, I want to ask you your opinion about living long-term in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia. I am certain you have been there if you have not lived there. Thanks in advance
I think it is a safe easy going town. Not enough going on there for me though. I like more stuff going on around me.
Quick question off subject: with all your travel experiences, which country would you recommend to have your teeth fixed ? I am 58 years old and while Iโm planing a 6 month stay anywhere and everywhere in around Asia, I would love to combine my experience with some needed dental work. But Iโm wondering where I would find the most qualified and technical advanced medical centre. And it doesnโt necessarily has to be the cheapest. Sure the price matters, but the outcome is a little more important to me.
I would definitely appreciate your recommendations and for that Iโd like to thank you in advance for your time and effort.

Malaysia is the ONLY country in ASEAN that allows Freehold ownership of land and property once the minimum amount threshold is met. RM1 million in most places, though some may have higher requirement. Freehold means ownership in perpetuity.
@@VagabondAwake Boy what a great article! So many potential pitfalls simply spelled out one may have never thought of, until too late. Especially if the value tanks, unlike the relative stability in Western markets. But of course now there's the whole protester chaos going on here in cities.

Vagabond Awake ...... Outside of BALI - which has high cost of living - if you like Western conveniences ,
I recommend Manado area ( North Sulawesi ) which is more Foreigner friendly & majority Christian plus
more relaxed style of living .... however the Indonesian VISA rules are complicated & expensive for longer
than 1 month stay .... For people of Chinese / Far East origin , you'll like Pontianak & Singkawang area in
West Kalimantan - bordering Sarawak , Malaysia .
Flights : Kuching , Malaysia to reach West Kalimantan . Davao , Philippines to reach North Sulawesi .
Jakarta Int. Airp. ( code : JKT/CGK ) has frequent flights to both areas mentioned above .
Although large Christian communities exist in North Sumatera ( Lake Toba ) , the Moluccan Islands with
Ambon as its transport hub , plus NTT province via Kupang .... Mass tourism is still limited .
Thank you Dan!

Excellent, V.A. A perfect mini-documentary. BBC and National Geographic have nothing on you! I live in the lovely hills of Tennessee. My wife of 20 years is a Filipina. Our paths crossed because of our related work in Health Care. She got Canadian citizenship and the rest became history. Depends on what one considers comfort. Our house is comparably simple and doesn't even have air-condition (I don't need that). And this is not a rich area around us, no expatriates, only locals, from relatively poor to middle-class, no high buildings either.

one advantage with Malaysia is that it has borders with Thailand and Singapore (I live in Singapore) and it is easier to get to just about anywhere from there, though the main airport in KL is actually in PJ and is a bit of a long way from the city. Whilst I like Malaysia, I do get rather tired of it. It is hard to say why. I liked it more 30-40 years ago and now it seems to be rather bland.
Given a forced choice, I would pick Malaysia but would still prefer Singapore despite its higher cost and until recently, have thought of Thailand. Unfortunately, the Thai govt is not very interested in tourists or long stay visa residents and it is better to avoid it on that basis. Yet I have a few friends there who love it. Some parts of Indonesia and particularly Bali are worth considering and I think Vietnam is getting better.
Nice summary. But I think Singapore is a bit to antiseptic for my taste.
@@VagabondAwake
No way!
The govt here wants it to have this shiny, super-clean image. It actually makes me laugh a bit - no bubble gum, yeah whatever.
It isn't when you get to know it. But being able to live in a place where the water is drinkable, the food is pretty good and everything works well does have its advantages.
I lived in Indonesia some time back and frankly, it is better to visit than to stay, as the endless failures get to you.
I mean the electricity cuts out, the water does not always flow, the mobile network is limited, transport is a nightmare, whatever.
And living here, I can easily get to any SE Asian nation quickly and cheaply, so it is sometimes a good idea to live here and use it as a base.
And if you want to get to Malaysia, it is a short distance across the causeway, and a half hr ferry to some Indonesian Islands.
Putting Covid-19 aside, I can get to/from most cities and beach places in surrounding nations for less than SGD100 (USD70) return.
And if you want to go travelling, you can just throw your goods and chattels in storage here and head off.
did you buy one way airline tickets when you enter Philippines? please let me know. Thank you very much.

Does the USA murder rate surprise you at all? Only 1.5 per 100k less than Philippines.
@@VagabondAwake Not at all. America has more guns than citizens. Which is why I thought it would be less than the U.S. Especially given the rates of some other Southeast Asian countries. @@PhilippinesLife101 so very true , it used to be , not anymore .
Malaysia boomed earlier therefore had the advantage of better things ahead of the Philippines.
Not so anymore. In the next 10 years better compare again as the disparity between the 2 Will be more pronounced in many ways.
Duterte is doing a very excellent job in redefining the country eliminating corruption, fixing peace & order, initiating an infrastructures boom, better government services and amnenities, etc.. In short things ate progressing for the best.
10 years from now, โdeuteriumโ as the next viable Green energy source to replace oil & gas would have already been mined and refined in the Philippines which holds the largest replenishable deposit in the world.
You can see where Iโm getting at.
The Philippines is an island paradise nation with so many natural tourism destination, English proficient speakers and the most friendliest and amicable prople in the world.
Couple these developments with an pan-island Bridge being built to connect all major Islands, the country Will greatly be highly competitive and developed in the next years to come.

If you intend to drive yourself around, Malaysia is the clear winner in SE Asia - no special skills needed other than to be a little more defensive. However, stick to local branded vehicles like Proton - imported brands are roughly double due to protectionism taxes.
Exactly. Big parts and labor savings too on the Proton cars. Plus, Grab (the Uber of SE Asia) is super cheap in Malaysia.
I will take Malaysia or Philippines for long term retirement. Food, safety, transportation, infrastructure is just no comparison. Thailand is still the best country in SE for retirement period.
Only that should learn proper Thai, because too many people don't know English outside the tourist-zones. In the Philippines I can talk to everyone in English even in the smallest village.
SE Asia has a place for everyone. :-)
Malaysia has no natural disasters like typhoon, volcanic eruption and earthquakes. Gun violence and expatriate kidnappings are least heard of in Malaysia, compared with the Philippines.
True, But they are rare all over SE Asia. Watch your back all over the world you will be fine CLT.
But still malaysia is a third world country ๐ stop candy- coating your country and downgrading other countries so that you will look good, no typhoon but you have deadly tsunami

the economy is going to be in big trouble after November, people are losing their jobs at a catastrophic rate, i`d say the Philippines might be a bit dicey for foreigners , but in chaos is opportunity , bars, apartments, housemaids , condos, working girls in the Philippines will be at bargain basement rates
Only time will tell.

There are always politicians around the world that need attention, but there seems to be way less of that in Malaysia as compared to the USA in my experience. Like 95% less. Thanks for commenting. @@VagabondAwake Malay's are one of most beautiful, friendliest people around the world.
@@VagabondAwake you're right, polticians uses race and religion to gain support in malaysian politics, especially old political parties.
In the Philippines one can openly discuss ANY religion without consequences. And there is no law that requires one to convert when wanting to marry someone with another religion. This is all not possible in Malaysia.
The Malays can get away with making racist comments or having mass Malays power rallies. Let's put it this way, it is like having a mass white supremacist rally in America but nobody dares to speak up against it. But the system only oppresses the minority citizens. You don't have to worry too much if you are white foreigner. They won't dare call too much international attention to any obvious racial bias against white people. But you are right if you are talking about religion. Anything that they deem insulting their religion, they will be less willing to forgive. So don't do stupid things like trying to preach to them on the streets or drink beer and eat pork in their faces or in certain states, walk around the beach in a skimpy bikini. But like all religions, there are moderates and extremists in equal measure. Oh, yes. If you want to marry a Malay girl, you have to convert to Islam. The downside is you have to forgo your beer and ham, but the upside is you get to marry up to four wives.
Malaysia at the drop of a hat . The people are very honest in Malaysia not so in the Philippines. Sorry but true .

Six months in Malaysia and surrounding countries for me every year and the remainder in Oz. Mostly because it's easy to get to Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand etc. No need to worry about visa's, just keep moving between countries. If I could find cheaper accommodation in Singapore, that's where I'd be living.
All true for me too, but Singapore. I find it a bit too sterile.
Malaysia!!!
Its a great place.
For re-entry without visa, beware of malaysia as many singaporeans bought houses in malaysia, commuting between the 2 sides over the weekends, ended up being denied entry. The immigration officers warned that even owning properties in the country do not automatically warrant an individual of residency. Beware!
Thanks for sharing. I recommend not buying real estate in foreign countries. Certainly not before obtaining a retirement visa.
For american expats central and south america is better than asia.
Thailand is better than philippines, malaysia is better that philippines.

Hi Dan. Excellent video as always.
Why have you not kept Thailand in the comparision?
Could you please reply me in more detail about the most beautiful white sand beaches in the world you said you saw in Malaysia? There location and names because youve seen them all.
A small town or island which itself contains white sand beaches is what most viewers are looking for, not for a 10 to 60 minute boat ride away.
Thankyou Dan awaiting your kind and detailed reply
Will do soon Eddie. no time today. That will require a video it is so detailed. Thanks for the idea for a video. thanks for commenting and subscribing. it helps our business. best, Dan
Guys have you heard of Langkawi island? It s duty free tourist island north of Penang, has several nice beaches on the island and many small unpopulated islands minutes away. Being duty free means cheap liquor and cars. I mean really cheap. RM3 or less for a can of beer. It has an airport too. As semi retiree, I prefer Langkawi to Penang.
If you like to view it's beaches, check out video below:
