So happy to have found your channel on RUclips. I have been wanting to get out find a place to retire out of the US for awhile now. In my late 20's & early 30's, I spent two-3 month stints in Mexico and Central America. But, I wasn't alone. I traveled with a male friend from New Zealand the first time and 2 years later with an Spanish speaking boyfriend. I loved parts of Mexico & Guatemala, but I would not have felt safe without a partner. Now, I'm retired and alone, and squeamish traveling alone. I speak some Spanish, but I've become rusty at it over the years when I was working as a Counselor in Arizona-in large part in an Army base town and on an Indian Reservation. I'm in my early 70's and in good health except for Osteo Arthritis in my Rt knee and lumbar spine which makes carrying a back pack difficult. Wondering how I could find people to travel with for safety and also wondering about medical insurance as I do need pain meds from time to time when my arthritis acts up. Doubt if my Medicare or Supplement would be any good down there. I have enough money to get around, but walking distances would be difficult, so I'd need a cart or some kind of scooter. (Don't need a wheel chair. I'd likely have to rent a place close to shopping and use busses or taxis to get around. I do have friends in Boquete, Panama, but not sure I'd like the rainy season there as it is intense in mountains where they live. Do you think it even possible for me with this arthritis? Medical insurance, at my age, would be necessary. Also wondering how I'd get my Medicare retirement check and State of AZ pension down there? Any feedback.

My two cents: Fruit is better in LA, mostly. BUT SE Asia’s got DURIAN!! If you go to Penang, Malaysia in July, you can do nothing but eat Durian. This shouldn’t be, but is. More variety of fantastic fruit in LA (Central America, at least). SE Asia can grow it, but don’t show up. E.g. Panama has bananas to die for. In general, the huge Mexican papayas in LA are better than Asia. India grows more banana varieties than anywhere (like 40) but I see like three or four, none as good as Chumbas in Panama. Thai food is best overall if you want to feel good after meal (besides cook yourself). Find the serious local wet markets. There’s usually cheap foodie restaurants and stands attached. Hawker centers in Singapore, night markets in Penang. You start to get cravings for local specialty dishes which will start to rank up there on how well you like an area. Sorry for rant. Here’s a request: best quiet, nature and urban amenities ( transport, internet, art and music) for cheap?
Just subscribed to the channel. I like going to Southeast Asia a lot but dislike there are some restrictions like the inability to get a second passport and buy land. Latin America on the other had does allow this and since I can speak Spanish the language barrier isn't as big of an issue. Travel and food in Asia period is good in my opinion.
How would an Asian country know if you gad two passports? Can you please clarify? Thanks for watching our videos and thanks for commenting that helps our business grow! Please subscribe if the mood strikes. Best, Dan

Thanks, this is a very informational video for anyone thinking of retiring cheaply. One big question we have is if you are traveling the World, where do you have so many different clothing outfits? Every picture has you guys in a different outfit! What’s the secret? We can barely make it 10 days with big overstuffed suitcases.
Qiang has mostly clothes and I have mostly technology. We both have just 20kg checked and 7kg carryon. Qiang has curated here clothing over the previous 10 years as a model living out of a suit case before joining me 4 years ago. She is just good a mixing and matching.
Hello my friend hope you are well and having a great start to the week. Thank you for sharing this very informative video. We are coming to Thailand in November for the very first time it's a dream come and I think I would want to retire in Thailand, take care and stay safe bro 👍❤️🙏
I'm torn between safety and climate. I really don't like sweltering in hot humid weather, so I'd prefer a place that has as little as possible of it. On the other hand, I'm not crazy about living in a place where I have to constantly be on my guard against crime. Therefore neither Latin America or Southeast Asia is ideal, although I do really like Malaysia and am intrigued by Ecuador. Portugal sounds really good, except that it seems it would be more complicated to stay there long term.
If you like fresh breeze and sunny weather all year lobg you might try a country located in the andes region in latin america. About the safety it varies between countries in LA or SEA. Some are a lot safer than others.
@@VagabondAwake Yes, we have been inspired by you to be nomads for at least a year after we retire before we pick a place (or a few places) to settle in. Thanks for letting us see another way of living!
A trip to Taiwan? It is a small island country north of Philippines. I like to know what you think of Taiwan and if this place is both people friendly and budget friendly.
Taiwan is like a giant overgrown Chinatown… very traditional, but also a highly developed country in most ways. The cost of living is more comparable to Singapore and Hong Kong, so not a popular retirement destination except for a few wealthy Chinese. Most western expats in Taiwan are the working type, either in business or teaching.
Love your content. I am struggling to find accommodations anywhere near the price points that you mention. The prices on AirBnB seem to have skyrocketed and finding another resource to locate monthly furnished apartments has been frustrating at best. Any suggestions?
You are so right. I predicted this would happen when things opened up again and it looks like it is. Here is what we do to find cheaper places: vagabondbuddha.com/how-i-find-perfect-apartments-traveling-the-world/
Having travelled extensively in both regions and having lived in Asia for the last 10 years, I pretty much agree with the assessment in this video. Probably a few considerations to add that weren't covered: Macro political economic situation, climate and music culture. In the last 10-20 years SE Asia has become a lot more stable politically and economically compared with LatAm. Government, currencies and inflation all appear far more stable in SE Asia versus LatAm where the threats of revolutions, currency crises and bouts of runaway inflation rates all remain a constant threat. This might not be a consideration for a vacation but definitely would be when considering a retirement choice. Inflation or currency swings could destroy your pension savings very easily and law and order threats to residency rights and privileges are not to be dismissed. As far as climate goes, SEA has a more homogeneous climate (tropical) with just wet and dry seasons and the odd typhoon, whilst LatAm due to its latitudinal range enjoys a much greater diversity of weather for you to chose from as a base or experience as well as seasonality. Music is also very different. Philippines feels by far the most musical nation I have ever been to but after that, live music in SEA is usually dominated by chart music driven cover bands whilst music and live music performance in LA feels more local and original. Other differences include the fact that SEA to a large degree contains an aspect of island living whilst LatAm is very much more continental living, (besides perhaps the Caribbean) - this plays out in terms of food (Asia has much more seafood) as well as activities and entertainment (scuba diving in Asia vs skiing in LatAm) and to a degree travel (Asia requires air flights or cruise ships to move around especially between countries whilst LatAm's continental layout enables more surface travel within and between countries). In the future there could be a different trajectory in terms of Geopolitics with potentially the US dominating the scene across the LatAm region and China increasingly exercising influence across SE Asia.

Another decision for people from USA is how close do you need to be to your home country? Central and a lot of South America is probably about a half days travel time where Asia is going to take you almost a whole day.
Spot on! Really enjoyed listening to your thoughts and experiences Dan. S America has an edge when it comes to proximity to the US; geographical diversity, "passionate culture" and language, as Spanish is relatively easy to learn. SE Asia is generally safer and calmer and more accepting when it comes to a genuine relationship involving an age gap. Having been previously married to a Colombiana and now happily married to a Filipina, I would recommend Philippines for xpats looking for love. Extra dangers in Colombia and Peru to be aware of: FARC, corrupt police and young men (sometimes working together) looking for an opportunity to separate you from your valuables. Haven't had any trouble in China, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Cambodia or the Philippines.
Great video thanks for sharing! For a vegan expat starting out would you recommend SE Asia (when it opens) or LA? I like the beach vibe, more laid back and less people, but food and weather are most important to me. Any suggestions for cities meeting this criteria also?
I've been to Colombia Brasil Ecuador Costa Rica ...brasil and Colombia 30 times each country. But if you want every thing Thailand is for me but now brasil can get boring after a few weeks and Colombia not much English so I say Thailand.
Been an expat in Asia SA weather too HOT humid rainy in Asia year around prefer Cuenca/Loja Ecuador great climate also Pasto Colombia CHEAP women are great there also.

Hi! I have been devouring your content and have found it very helpful in helping me make a decision on where to go.. I asked this in one of your Panama videos but would my VA disability of about $3200 a month work in any of these places in SE Asia? SE Asia seems to be my preference right now. Hi Dan and Qiang . Thanks for sharing useful advice and your travels with us. Instead of just writing about the most popular cities, can you also look into alternative smaller towns in Philippines, Malaysia, and Vietnam? For example, I heard that Valencia near Dumaguete a nice town, including some mountain and higher elevation towns. Also, can you talk about dental care with more details in each country as some of us will need dental services abroad. Thanks and take care.

Hi, just discovered your channel today and am really enjoying your content. You provide a wealth of very clear information with some wonderful photographs. I would retire in SE Asia anyday over Latin America. It’s cheaper, safer, better transportion, friendly people, better beaches and a more structure culture! 😊

Great content as usual! As far as I can tell for the time being you guys are doing southeast Asia slow traveling but have you already done the Slavic countries or Europe particularly Spain or any of the Nordic countries?
I can imagine Thai, Singaporean, Vietnamese and Malaysian foods are delicious because I ate a lot of foods of these 4 countries when I was in Hong Kong. I am not sure about the foods in Philippines. I didn’t have pleasant experience about the foods when I was in Philippines except I ate a lot of pineapples and papayas.
I'll be staying in SE Asia (when I can finally go there) as long as I'm a renter. If I get to a point in life when I want to buy property, like a small farm, Latin America is where I'll look. Speaking of which, is there anyplace you've visited that would be attractive to you for owning real estate (other than condos)?
Dan made an excellent vlog not too long ago about the reasons you probably shouldn't buy real estate in developing countries, basically saying it's too risky...
Can't fight your business model, it's successful... But I wonder, do you have time to try new things with your channel, or possibly create a new channel covering different topic possibly a more indebted way. For example how about covering local festivals in the areas that you travel, the history, the social dynamic of a culture... Thinking like a social scientist way... You seemed to think that way naturally even if you are not a scientist... Seems you are a natural... Possibly interview artist, educators, doctors, police, local officials, farmers and famous people of those region... I am thinking "Charlie Rose," style... Seems like a lot of work but I think it could be fun for you both... You have the question already prepared for the interview in advance and you shared them with your interviewee in advance, no need for surprises or gotcha questions... I would steer clear of politics though, could be too controversial... Either way I am a Fan, either way you go... Thank you
Yeah, but the rest of the world isn't remotely close to the paradise and safety southeast Asia offers. There's a reason it's the most visited region on Earth.
Love your info. Not a big fan of the constant shots of your girlfriend. Sorry. I just think it would nice if you were in the photos too. I get that she's eye candy. I get it. Latin America is too dangerous. Highest crime rates in the world. Sure, it is beautiful and nice for a vacation if you take your precautions, but not to live there when you're old and vulnerable.
Thanks for your opinion Kay. Here are my thoughts on safety. Personally, I think it is more neighborhood based than country based. vagabondbuddha.com/how-to-travel-the-world-safely/
I traveled to Costa Rica 6 times in the 90s with the intention of moving there and opening a little B&B with the ex, but it is not cheap these days due to the large influx of Americans, raising the cost of real estate.
Yes, CR is a nice place. But it is getting more expensive each year and more Americanized. I prefer living in more foreign feeling places. But I totally see why some people love it. Especially if it is their first time living outside the USA.
Dan...how did you avoid the gold digging girls since you were a target when you started living in south east asia. You mentioned you came across a few before you met your current girlfriend. What should us novice guys look out for when we meet our first mahal? Do you have any horror stories to tell such as a jealous scorned ex filipina? How did you meet such a nice girl friend since you dont frequent bars or hang out with rich expats who seem to have many mahals at the same time. Can a nice girl be found online such as in dateinasia or filipina cupids? Or should we frequent the malls or discos? What so far has been your worse experience in the philippines?
We met on Tinder. You might see some obvious signs when you start dating. It should start to get obvious within a few weeks or months. She should be able to roll cheap in local restaurants. If she is upity, she will try to get you to go to expensive places all the time. Once a week or s is okay depending upon your budget.
Hey Two Bear, thanks for sharing this idea. We love the Philippines too. Thanks for commenting too. When people comment our video is shown to more people. Best, Dan
Yeah especially the religion. If you want a more closer look to its pre-colonial culture, just go to the northern most part or southern part of the country.

Thanks for the fruit summary. :-)
Thank you very much for a very clear msg....am new to your channel and appreciate it from the bottom of our hearts....lucky to find you....peace
Thanks and you are welcome Ashe_n. Please subscribe if the mood strikes. It will help our business grow. Thanks, Dan
Best, Dan
@@VagabondAwake I'm talking about getting a second passport from an Asian country. Not if a person has two passports already.
Thanks for youy travel videos. I am visiting Cebu Philippines also but still here in lockdown. I came here in September 2019. Still here in September 2020. I may check Latin America. I moved to Toronto in 1974 from Guyana. SOUTH AMERICA. Latin America and South America will be closer for me to travel around
Sounds great!
Great video with important insights and thoughts. Thanks!
Thank you Gary!
Very helpful info, thanks
You bet!
Hello my friend hope you are well and having a great start to the week. Thank you for sharing this very informative video. We are coming to Thailand in November for the very first time it's a dream come and I think I would want to retire in Thailand, take care and stay safe bro 👍❤️🙏
Thanks for visiting
@@VagabondAwake you are very welcome
Very nice photos too !

Very informative video !!! Thanks for sharing your expertise !!!
Glad it was helpful!
Try Dalat in Vietnam. It’s like 18C - 26C
They are all good ideas. I would visit before deciding which one is for you.

Its on the list but haven't been there yet.
East Asia isn't cheap. Might as well retire in London, NYC, SF or Geneva.
Here is what we do to find cheaper places: vagabondbuddha.com/how-i-find-perfect-apartments-traveling-the-world/
I lived in Makati Philippines and ready to go back to Latin America I guess I should visit more of the other Southeast Asian countries to be fair
Thanks for the ideas Phillips.
Very Informative. You really Helped My Research. Thank You!!
I'm so glad!
Thanks for sharing your perspective AMS. Thanks for watching our video and sharing and thanks for commenting that helps our business grow! Please subscribe if the mood strikes. Best, Dan

I didn't find the people as happy and joyful in Southeast Asia is I did Latin America perhaps I need something to see some of the Buddhist culture my understanding it is very peaceful said to be fair I should try to visit them
Try it out. I think you will find happy people in both places. :-)

Another decision for people from USA is how close do you need to be to your home country? Central and a lot of South America is probably about a half days travel time where Asia is going to take you almost a whole day.
Well said and accurate.
Thanks for another great video.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing Dave!
Great video thanks for sharing! For a vegan expat starting out would you recommend SE Asia (when it opens) or LA? I like the beach vibe, more laid back and less people, but food and weather are most important to me. Any suggestions for cities meeting this criteria also?
I would pick SE Asia first for vegans. I am vegetarian and I find SE Asia easier than LA.
@@VagabondAwake nice! Thanks for the info. I'm awaiting more SE Asian countries to open up then I'll visit a few cities to see what I like

I was curious, how do taxes work as an American? Whether one is retired and your income is from Social Security and or investments, or, if you are still working and traveling like you are? Have you discussed this elsewhere? I just hit subscribe and look forward to going through your other videos.
Welcome aboard! I don't really pay much attention to taxes. I have had the same CPA for 20+ years in the USA and he takes care of that. :-) Sorry.
It would be great to hear about this for a single woman as well and for people not wanting a 30 year age difference with their partner.
Pretty much all mainstream travel channels cater to those groups. This one is different, no need to change it.
Thank you both for your ideas!
Colombian busses are scary as heck. They overtake each other on the mountains.
True. You have to put your game face on. lol.

Thank you

There is more too the world than just south east Asian

Yeah, but the rest of the world isn't remotely close to the paradise and safety southeast Asia offers. There's a reason it's the most visited region on Earth.

Latin America is too dangerous. Highest crime rates in the world. Sure, it is beautiful and nice for a vacation if you take your precautions, but not to live there when you're old and vulnerable.
Thanks for your opinion Kay. Here are my thoughts on safety. Personally, I think it is more neighborhood based than country based. vagabondbuddha.com/how-to-travel-the-world-safely/
costa rica is inviting Americans to come there and building whole communities for us. there government does not have a skewed view of Americans.
Philippines offered 36 months (3 years) visa free.....
Its 36 months but not visa free. You have to pay about $30 month. But you can pay every 6 months so you aren't going to immigration every month.
👍:-)
