We have had great Internet in Mexico but Puerto Escondido is not the best. Sad to say that. We had great Internet in most other places in Mexico in the past. Many of my retire cheap reports have the Internet speed where we stayed.
The tip on getting to a place first and walking the neighborhoods is useful advice. What's still not clear is once you found the neighborhood you like, how did you find the particular property? Do they all simply have signs outside letting you know they are for rent? Are they all like this? The tip about the app to test internet connection was quite interesting.
Each country is slightly different. Some hate signs, some are not well connected digitally, and others are all agent based. You walk the neigborhoods and look for rental signs. If you don't see any, then try Googling "Apartments for rent" in the local language and see what comes up. You can also find landlords on webpages like Airbnb, Booking, etc. Tell them you are in the neighborhood and want to see the inside before booking.

I think the tough part for digital nomads working for traditional companies remotely, is that we're expected to be online and working M-F. So following the "book 4-5 days first..." route would involve taking vacation each time you move to a new location to go on this in-person fact-finding mission on where to stay. There are certainly benefits to being able to check out a place in person, but it may not be feasible for those with traditional/set work situations and we may be forced to book longer-term rentals from the get-go based on online reviews. Also, for "slow travel" nomads, taking the "book 4-5 days first..." approach may leave you in a pickle to find those better long-term rentals, as they may not be available on a monthly, discounted rate by the time you complete your onsite fact-finding mission.

I think the place looks very nice and it certainly makes sense to pay a bit more and be happy for an extended stay than just save and regret the decision. I am from Vienna, Austria and usually try to get away for the winter months ... last year, I went to Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam but Southeast Asia is pretty much off limits this year ... your videos made me consider Mexico ... Thanks for the tip about the internet and finding a coworking spot. I am living in Huatulco and we have internet and phone outages (both Telcel and internet at the same time, for 5 to 6 hours) regularly. Considering moving to Puerto Escondido if I can't find an emergency backup place here for uploads. Thanks!
Vagabond Awake Dan. I have followed your Chanel for couple years. May I suggest mind body exercise like Qigong to you? Overseas travel constantly and family member health are a lot on one’s mind. Please take care of yourself. A good beginning Qigong movement regiment is called Eight Precious Brocades which you can find on RUclips easily. Think of it as a moving meditation. Just try not to practice the routine when there are thunders or lightenings outside.
Another excellent video. Thank you. i totally agree. One thing I thought of and you may have mentioned it else where, is deposits. My experience has been that more than 50% of the time, the landlord will not return your deposit. They know you have a deadline to leave and they will put you off for absurd reasons, so as to not return the deposit. And of course if you are leaving the area, they will promise to send it to you. Then they simply disappear and you lose your deposit. Dan do you have some input on this?
Thanks Dan for a very informative video. It's been my dream to retire in Mexico. I'm glad to hear that you'll be reuniting with your 'partner in crime' soon!

Hi Dan, I just found you on the web a few days ago and have been "binge watching" your channel. haha. You put out some great information, thank you. I do sincerely want to travel as you do, but a little hiccup is I have a small dog. My guess is it complicates things. Have you done any videos yet on how to travel with pets? I don't think half the places for rent would like animals. And I am thinking many countries want to quarantine a dog for a week or a month first over rabies issues. How hard is it to through a dog into the mix? If you have info or a set of videos on this that would be awesome. TYVM and Hope you can get back to me if you have a min. Have a great week.
Hi Mike, I no longer have a dog so I am not experienced in solving this problem. So Sorry. But each country has its own rules about pets. You just have to read one at a time when you are going to make the move. Dan
I’m heading to Mexico next month so I was really looking forward to the info. I don’t understand the title. Book a week then get there and look around. Thanks for the valuable information 😂
@@IaintTheHerb - Yes. A wire through the backpack drawstrings, a slash-proof covering and a lock with strap to secure to a pole wherever you are. I have one. Wouldn’t travel without a Loctote bag!
Can you do a video on environmental factors like places to avoid if you have mold sensitivity or which countries have more issues with mosquitoes etc. Thanks
Renting a place for a night or two to check it out has one big risk; that someone will rent the place in the mean time because it appears to be a good deal. So after the two days that you rented it for you learn that someone else will be in it shortly after your two days so there goes your idea of renting it by the week or month!
True. When I book the place, I ask the landlord to mark me down as tentative for the month and I will confirm with 72 hours when I am on the ground there. That keeps it open for an extension. Most will do it because I will be taking it for the month versus leaving it open and having someone take 2 days in the middle of the month and ruining the more steady income.
We are flying to Merida first then want to follow your advice on finding a place to stay there. Or maybe a new city we are hoping to follow y'alls video's on what to do Thank you

Hi Dan, is it a good idea to travel with your own router if wifi speed is not so important? What else do you recommend bringing with you (kitchenware, appliances, etc) apart from obvious personal things?
@ForeignGalaxy, Dan here. I have been traveling the world since 2007. Here is my packing list of light weight and heavy weight. vagabondbuddha.com/what-i-pack-to-travel-the-world/ Thanks for asking, Dan
Very cool looking digs! For most people it’s so unusual to have a refrigerator outdoors because then it has to compete with the heat however it saves space indoors I guess. Outdoor bathrooms have their ups and downs. If you need it in the middle of the night it can be a little inconvenient but other times it’s just fine. I could almost sense the pleasant vibe you were talking about. I was YouTubing around PE and I noticed quite a lot of “hippie culture.” Would you say that’s accurate/prevalent?
I would say yes, hippie happy place. Check out the La Punta neighborhood when you come here. Hippie central. Thanks for watching our videos and thanks for commenting that helps our business grow! Please subscribe if the mood strikes. Best, Dan
Vagabond Awake lol!! Oh nooo I’m not a hippie lol. It’s not really my style at all. It’s good to know because being that is the case PE isn’t for me. I’d definitely visit though. I’ve been to Chetumal, Playa Del Carmen and Mérida. Merida is really appealing. Being so close is Oaxaca a different culture? You also reviewed Queretaro. That’s very appealing too.

Settling into safe surroundings is a challenge in itself traveling as you do. Finding a central location between the markets, vacation spots(beaches), and transportation points is an exercise in perseverance. I noticed you showing a clothes line was there laundry facilities nearby?
100 Mbps Starlink will be capable of delivering internet speeds of 100 Mbps or more with ultralow latency to people all around the world. I can't wait. Musk is transforming many parts of our lives.
I was surprised and dissapointed with this video because the rent was nearly 600 bucks for one month....really? Yes I understand your rationalle about the internet speed but it would seem that you could have found a hotel in the city center with internet speed for less. Otherwise, I really love and appreciate your genuine attitude and the vast amount of videos you offer for us to view...thank you.
Since you’ve done this a lot more than I have I was kind of looking for a little more detail… This was good but you didn’t confirm if you did book this with Airbnb or off a sign… And if you did book it with a sign did you use pesos and did you try to negotiate… As this is more acceptable in Mexico…And what neighborhoods did you find suitable to your needs in Puerto Escondido? What were the upper and lower limits of the rentals? You mentioned an eight step process… And how do you find Puerto Escondido as compared with many of the other cities you’ve stayed in in Mexico? This is not a critique it’s just some of the questions I’m left with... thanks for all you do Dan you’ve helped me greatly I have traveled like you and when the Situation gets better I’m going to go back to it… Thanks!
Yes. I spent more time on the web page when writing about the process. There are 8 steps there. Click the link in the notes below any of our videos for more details.
Check before you fly, but meds are over the counter in many countries. Go to Facebook and search for "Expats Countryname" or "Expats Cityname" Join and ask if that med is available in that country, Many of not most are. Once you verify, then also fly with a months supply in case it takes time to get your refills. Thanks for the great question. I will do a video on this.
Sorry, I don't disclose where I am for security reasons. As soon as I leave I will publish it then in my retire cheap report for Puerto Escondido here: vagabondbuddha.com/ Sorry I couldn't be more immediately helpful. :-)
HELLO, ANOTHER GREAT VIDEO! MY QUESTION FOR YOU...IS THERE A REQUIREMENT TO HAVE A PROOF' OF RETURN FLIGHTS FOR SOME OF THE PLACES YOU TRAVELED? I KNOW WHEN I WENT TO ITALY...THIS WAS NOT A REQUIREMENT...HOWEVER I AM RECALLING SOMETHING ON LINE REGARDING CERTAIN AREAS REQUIRING THIS?
Great question Joylight, As you have probably heard we almost never buy round trip tickets. We move forward slow traveling the world. But some countries require a return ticket or onward flight. But the rules change all the time so don't assume what I am about to tell you is true for any airline or country. You have to check the night before. But is they require a return ticker or onward flight, here is what we do. If so, when you try to board your flight going to the country, with a one-way ticket, the airline will ask for proof of a return flight or an onward flight. We handle this three possible ways. If you can find a refundable ticket a few hours before you board your flight, buy that, and cancel after you clear customs at your destination. If not, buy an onward flight from one of the online companies that offer onward flights. They cost about $12 USD. Just Google the words "Onward Flights" and a few will pop up. But if you decide to buy the $12 onward flight, show up at the airport 3 hours early. We had one refused by the airline once. So that brings up the third way. When your $12 onward flight is refused, step out of line, and log on with your computer or smartphone and buy the cheapest flight you can find exiting the country. For example, we search online for the cheapest ticket to a nearby country, leaving that country. Then you lose much less money than you would if you bought a roundtrip ticket to your home country. Skyscanner is the best place to find cheap tickets in our experience. Some countries will also let you buy an onward train or bus ticket to another country which can be even cheaper. Use RometoRio.com to find those. Best, Dan

Very! The palm roof is much cooler than conventional roofing. If I had AC here I would not have turned it on yet. Its been 4 days already. The other place (conventional roof and walls) I would have turned and run the AC 24-7.
3 nights so far. I wouldn't have turned it on if I had it. The roofing and open floor plan makes all the difference. The other place I stayed needed it but didn't have it. It was no hotter outside then so its just the construction materials.

@@VagabondAwake Thank you Dan I’ve seen it. What I meant was how do you choose a long term rental from a distance when you can’t walk the neighborhood…
I am a little embarrassed to say ... I have been going to Mexico for 40 years and keep going back. I speak very little Spanish. I get by fine. I speak about 10 lines. Bathroom, beers, thank you, please, very good, where is, how much is, my name is, what is your name, vegetarian, does this have meat, fish, or chicken? If they don't speak English, they listen to you struggle for about 10 seconds and then go get the person nearby that speaks English. English means money in Mexico so they learn if they are in a tourist area. You will struggle more when you get off the beaten path, but that is when I use Google Translate. If I waited to learn the language before traveling around the world, my country count would be 5 instead of 65. I am not delaying travel because I am language lazy. I love it too much. I usually find that from watching RUclips videos of other expats. Look for the names of businesses on streets that you like when they walk by. Or come to my retire cheap reports. I usually have a walking video of my favorite area(s) of town. :-)
That is correct. Both are for only this apartment and each apartment on this property has its own exclusive kitchen and bathroom. Whenever we are done documenting a city we write a retire cheap report that includes everything we learned about that city. Places to stay, things to do, where to eat, and maps and links. This place will be in that report.

Given that there are at least 20 countries that use dollars as their currency, it would be better if you clearly state which dollars. Just my two cents worth. Good job otherwise.
Not a lot of information; too much random filler crap like tour of your rental. So the technique is to walk around looking for deal and call. This is such a crapshoot that takes more than two days. And if you find one, it’s just so happens it’s available for you to move in like now. Who post a for-rent sign for a 2 month rental? And forget about a 1 month rental.
Thank you for your insight! It is very informative for me and can be applied just about anywhere. Looking forward to travel like this when my wife has her us passport.
Please please get to the point already. You act like we would know or care what port Escondido is. We don't. We don't care how important the internet is to you. We don't. You told us 8 steps. OK, 15 min video 4 min in, I've not heard Step 1 yet. ORGANIZE man. Get it together before you start talking. You're giving us city info, didn't tell us what country you were in. Jesus Christmas.
Okay Paul. Thanks for the constructive criticism. 8 steps are on the web page here: vagabondbuddha.com/how-i-find-perfect-apartments-traveling-the-world/
You can see the length of the video before you watch it. Maybe you should choose shorter videos since your screen name clearly makes it obvious what is most important to you. Also, many of us do care about having good wifi when we travel. However, I will agree with you that it would have been nice to mention this was in Mexico much earlier.

Thanks for the tip about the internet and finding a coworking spot. Hi!!! Love your channel! What CAMERA do you use?
That is a long story. This video is mostly the Canon M50 with the lens that it comes with.
@@VagabondAwake That's a great camera. You probably use a few different cameras I would guess.
Thank you Dan! You are very courageous.

Very nice place. Thanks for sharing. Nice neighborhood too.

Thank you Robert Rishworth! Thanks for watching and commenting. :-) Dan
I dont make deposits.
@@VagabondAwake Great. I simply mentioned it as possible important information for those who have not yet learned this. :)

Dan
Awesome video, very informative, on things to do. I like the idea of "The world is your home, what time will you be in for dinner?"
Thanks. Trying to get people thinking about traveling the world. Our governments think they own us but I say we are free.
Good information Dan; my wife and I want to slow travel when I retire in a few years
Go for it!
I’m heading to Mexico next month so I was really looking forward to the info. I don’t understand the title. Book a week then get there and look around. Thanks for the valuable information 😂
That about sums it up. The 8 steps on the web page ae a little more detailed. Click the link in the notes below the RUclips video for that. :-)
With such a seemingly open living space, can you share tips on keeping valuables/electronics safe?
We keep valuables in the room which is locked when we are not at home. :-)
@@VagabondAwake you should look into a Loctote bag.
Thanks
Thanks for the ideas Eddy. :-)

Settling into safe surroundings is a challenge in itself traveling as you do. Finding a central location between the markets, vacation spots(beaches), and transportation points is an exercise in perseverance. I noticed you showing a clothes line was there laundry facilities nearby?
Sometimes our Airbnb has a clothes washing machine, sometimes we send laundry out 1 or twice a week. Here we send it our for 17 pesos per kg.
how about In season, out of season timing any tips ?
Great question. Let think about doing a video on that. :-) In general we try to stay away entering during high season. Too much competition.

@@VagabondAwake jury is out on whether exporting more American "culture" will be a good thing.
We like to cook. So we need the kitchen. :-) But we could definitely find cheaper if we rented long term. That was for a month including utilities.

When you travel all around the world like 3 months here 3 months there. How do you handle prescription meds? Like where do you get them?
Check before you fly, but meds are over the counter in many countries. Go to Facebook and search for "Expats Countryname" or "Expats Cityname" Join and ask if that med is available in that country, Many of not most are. Once you verify, then also fly with a months supply in case it takes time to get your refills. Thanks for the great question. I will do a video on this.
@@VagabondAwake I appreciate it. thank you
Another great video Dan, how do you feel about the COVID situation there? Are masks mandatory?
Masks are required in stores and enclosed places but in open areas not everyone is wearing a mask.

Hi Dan love this place my brother is traveling Mexico right now, can you tell me the name of this place, I am going to send him this video
Great question Joylight,
As you have probably heard we almost never buy round trip tickets. Best, Dan
@@VagabondAwake THANK YOU DAN...RIGHT ON TIME...I AM PURCHASING TICKET WITHIN 72 HRS. WOULD NOT HAVE FELT COMFORTABLE ...WITH OUT YOUR 'EXPERIENCED INPUT'! SIGNED "A FAN FOREVER". STARTING IN THE PHILIPPINES...
do you find that they rent goes up when the owner/landlord sees that you are a foreigner? Have you ever had a local ask the rent price before you go to check it out and get the rent price?

Hello Dan
I just got back to U S A from southern Europe after. 9 months. I am considering Mexico or Ecuador for few months .
I value your opinion , could you help
Sincierly
Gani
I love both Mexico and Ecuador. We spent months of 2018 in each. Go for it. Lovely places.
Nice place but are you sure you'll be comfortable there without an AC? It gets pretty hot in Puerto Escandido
Very! The palm roof is much cooler than conventional roofing. If I had AC here I would not have turned it on yet. Its been 4 days already. The other place (conventional roof and walls) I would have turned and run the AC 24-7.
@@VagabondAwake that's great. What's the temperature inside without AC? Does it get hotter than outside?
The apartment seems great for the price, a shame though that the bedroom does not have air conditioning.
3 nights so far. I wouldn't have turned it on if I had it. The roofing and open floor plan makes all the difference. The other place I stayed needed it but didn't have it. It was no hotter outside then so its just the construction materials.
How would you book a long term stay in Mexico now when you’ll need to show a place to stay for the duration of your visit to get a visa for that long?

Thank you Dan I’ve seen it. What I meant was how do you choose a long term rental from a distance when you can’t walk the neighborhood…
Hey Dan, can I ask, did you take a direct flight to Mexico?
No. I had to go see my mother in California. Ten I flew to Mexico via SFO-Houston-MexicoCity-PuertoEscondido.
Have you been to Mazunte , and south?
Yes. I will be reporting on that soon. :-)
Where's Puerto Escondido
Google Maps? goo.gl/maps/hyV5DpEZEk95BKuz5
so in the first 4-5 days, do you actually make appointments & go look inside at several places before choosing one?
Yes. We test internet, AC, and wifi, then make an offer.
Amazing deal ! Just would like to know how do you pay for the rental? Cash or ?
They give you the options ... peso, dollar, or credit card. They add 5% if you use credit card.
Safe. Owner leaves kitchen appliances out. Thatched roof = cool
You got that right!
I slow travel 3 to 6 months in one place.
Interesting video. Just wondering how difficult it would be to survive without speaking Spanish?
Please subscribe if the mood strikes Phil. Best, Dan

@@VagabondAwake Good idea on the link. I am more impressed by your professionalism.
But . . . how do you find the neighborhood that you want to walk around in?
I usually find that from watching RUclips videos of other expats. Look for the names of businesses on streets that you like when they walk by. Or come to my retire cheap reports. I usually have a walking video of my favorite area(s) of town. :-)
Got it but where the he'll is it?
So that apartment/villa kitchen and bathroom is just for You? Not shared with strangers?
That is correct. Both are for only this apartment and each apartment on this property has its own exclusive kitchen and bathroom. Whenever we are done documenting a city we write a retire cheap report that includes everything we learned about that city. Places to stay, things to do, where to eat, and maps and links. This place will be in that report.

I TOOK EARLY RETIREMENT....
And yet it works.
