Hello from the Al Jazeera Fault Lines team - let's keep the comments here pertinent to the episode and please no off-topic or offensive comments or personal attacks.
Glitches or bugs in artificial intelligence are really difficult to predict , so this is really a dilemma of the autonomous systems when get very complex , self awareness is one possibility , because nobody knows what self awareness is or how is developed . So this glitch you talking about is called terminator for me the chance exists .
There is no doubt in my mind that there will be a Data, a Lore and even a Borg, the question is only when not whether. It boils down to adapting to the new reality not trying to stop it. Law and rules will follow as the number of precedents goes up.
9:10 "the barriers to war in our society are already being lowered. Now we have a technology that literally take those barriers to the ground" - good times ahead!?
just think in the 50s things like this were only dreams and in such a short time they have become reall. i think that a human element should always be required to use drones to attack, make everything else automatic just not that part. i think that is the best safety feature that we can put on drones.
If humanity continue to walk this path of spend all it's money in building weapons rather than solving problems like poverty; one day this world will eat itself up.
We are doing great job at creating intelligent machines to fight our battles, now if we could just create some intelligent politicians to run our countries.. We would not need to spend all the effort and money on the tech toys.
What an appallingly simple hypothesis, "The robots are gonna be smarter than us!" It requires the right roots, the right knowledge to grow into something great. Robots are clearly another medium of Human thought and we ALWAYS loose information through mediums.
23:28 That is a very true statement. But how would we as human beings go about shutting down those two institutions? Especially considering the fact so many people not only benefit from both but they have their behavior so ingrained into War and Capitalism.
Killing others from a safe distance is always cowardly ,imagine a boxing match where one stood in the ring and the other only pressed buttons controlling a robot
This report was fine until the 'experts' started telling us that robots will be smarter than us. Its true that in terms of pure processing power and data access, machines may be able to out perform most people, but in reality this isn't intelligence. Intelligence is based upon problem solving, and fundamentally self consciousness. The notion that we can create a robotic brain that excels our own when we don't even understand how our own works is absurd. Robots will never be smarter than us.
Terminators by 2050 :D Does this mean that robots should then be given equal rights to humans, tried under an equal rule of law if they eventually do possess individual autonomy and intelligence? Technology solves problems but seems to create so much more.
I prefer my war with people dying. It emphasizes the cost of victory more and pushes for better leadership in the battlefield. It's one thing to play chess with your robot toys it's more prestigious to send in flesh and blood mortals. A sweeter victory indeed.
We should keep progressing with robotic technology. When artificial intelligence is superior to human intelligence it will be able to work out a solution to human cultural differences other than using violence. Although we are smart creatures, we seem to deny the fact we will ultimately descend to our primitive impulses to resolve a problem... which is violence. Lacking these primitive survival impulses that override reason, artificial intelligence will provide us with ethical answers.
Pakistan “RISING” has established itself as part of a very dynamic regional paradigm amalgamating it geographically with Central Asia, Middle East and Europe. While also situated at the gateway to the Arabian Gulf, Pakistan will also have access to the waters of the Caspian Sea, Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea, Arabian Sea, China Sea and the Pacific Ocean. This positions Pakistan at the crossroads to peace and prosperity in the world and economic well-being as well as military clout
@xjehadix Your comment makes me realize that just maybe this oparation is aiming to increase the taliban numbers, not the oposite, just think about it, If the increase, well we will have more confrontation, hence more war, hence more money for the military. Do you agree?
At least 80% of those killed in tribal areas of Pakistan are innocent civilians, whose relatives then turn into militants. For every civilian killed by a drone strike, 10 more sign up for the Taliban. When the drone strikes started back in 2004 there were less than 5000 Taliban in the region. Now after the death of thousands of people in drone attacks, there are over 20,000 Taliban in the region.
Will all these robots be 'un-hackable'? Is it even possible to build a system that can't be compromised? What happens if the enemy takes control of these systems and either captures them or even turns them against their original controllers? It looks like it's already been done - case in point is highly credible claims that the Iranians captured a US drone.
@Djecho1109 Should men engage in warfare is a philosophical question. My point is, that military robots wont make warfare any more barbaric or murderous that it already is, and that there are true horrors of war that jourlanist should shed light upon. Instead, they try to catch the viewer's attention by some fancy sci-fi topic such as "Military robots". Its pretty much a hype. The theme is far LESS deserving attention than the media try to stirr about it.
Here's an idea: What if we had a war in which robots fought eachother, total number of robots lost in the battle field tallied, then real humans put in gas chambers and killed to simulate the loss? Great idea if ask me !
@alfredaskeljung I see your point, but personally I still disagree with the premise that robots will ever be smarter than us. Despite the fact that we can image the brain better than before, at a fundamental level we don't really know how a billion to the billion binary connections can produce consciousness. And I suspect that we never will, simply because of the sheer complexity of the issue. I'm a med student and the thing that strikes me when studying neurology is how little we know.
we are trying to build robots who can hurt us and we want them to be smarter than us.tell me what makes us smarter then computers, even birds are wiser then us.they make nests high on trees so as to save their young.lets all get togather and put an end to this madness .lets include more people in decisions of life dont tack people out of equation.and give it to piece of metal n wires.

Figures of Civilian deaths are distorted, drones cannot differentiate between militants and civilians, all armed men are not necessarily Taliban. It is a culture in the wazirstan region to carry weapons at all times, can a drone differentiate between a Taliban armed with an ak-47 and a local tribesman armed with an ak-47? The answer is no.
Hello from the Al Jazeera Fault Lines team - let's keep the comments here pertinent to the episode and please no off-topic or offensive comments or personal attacks.
It's a sad world we live in,bro.
Facts!!
@AlJazeeraEnglish great job aljazeera.please include more coverage of pakistan and afghanistan.this issue is so important to most of us

I missed the good old days like Achilles vs Hector

I am sure that robot shall dominate the world in the future.

I agree with you whole heartedly, however courage has a price; casualties
23:28 That is a very true statement. But how would we as human beings go about shutting down those two institutions? Especially considering the fact so many people not only benefit from both but they have their behavior so ingrained into War and Capitalism.
@AlJazeeraEnglish Thanks for the vid, I like military stuff
Excellent presentation...
I was hopping it would have a second part...
casualties deter wars...perhaps we need more of them so people will figure out that violence sucks
great report - thanks AJ. (PS. Who is the female interviewee? She should be heading the robot programme)
Nek minute, Terminator.
amazing words in the end...
This technology has profound implications for our unmanned space program as well.
Killing others from a safe distance is always cowardly ,imagine a boxing match where one stood in the ring and the other only pressed buttons controlling a robot

yeah we'll get right on that
Smith n Wesson Drones - the new point and click ...
@timigaguy you have such a beautiful country new zealand
This shows how important WikiLeaks is!
Holy crap, there is actually a company named iRobot. I thought it was just a movie.
I wrote my comment before seeing the video, but it is awsome that they are telling the same as me...
2012, the year of the terminator. Hopefully it'll turn on it's creators and leave the general population alone.
I prefer my war with people dying. It emphasizes the cost of victory more and pushes for better leadership in the battlefield. It's one thing to play chess with your robot toys it's more prestigious to send in flesh and blood mortals. A sweeter victory indeed.
As anyone that knows programing will tell you computers will never think they will never be smart. That's not how they work.
until Judgement day when the machines rise

Diaz likes this!!! WAR DIAZ
This is SPACE FORCE !!
''We have more in common with the Iraqi people than we do the
billionaires who send us to war''
- Mike Prysner
@Gormanmod I wouldn't call a robot that simply follows routines "intelligent", but that may be a question of definition..
Yeah, not so sweet when you are the pawn and not so good when you, flesh and blood, are playing chess against a very very good computer.
175 children... that alone will not justify all of these.

War is a Racket

@datworkers :
This is the price of war. War is supposed to be ugly.

@djorkid :
Actually the Fed holds the majority of US debt. China is just the largest foreign holders of US debt.
the brits have robots too buddy, infact u have the same exact kind we do lol.
Rita J King is hot!!!!
I , Robot ? For REAL? You MUST be kidding me.... (ಠ.ಠ)

just think without 9/11 we wouldnt have this much technology rite now and we wouldnt have to worie about robots that could kill us in our sleep.
what was the white walking robot they featured in this short film?
I luv aje
the new era will look like terminator 2 lol
@searcher619 We need to have a space program first.
at 16:09, is that girl assuming that in the future when people view this video people will think those earrings are fashionable?
robots as smart as humans? I don't think they know how complicated the human brain is.. We're far from that.
@DivineMoleculeDMT when we try our time machine

I forgot the "'D*mb Fu*k! at the end of that", Good luck, ya's need it!
Sounds like the IRobot move... : /
How do I get training to be one of the people using these things?
until the EMP barrier wars begin.
Cylons! 2012
change takes time, you want quick fixes and easy answers, we'll there aren't any
Really? Putting a slow, low pitch, scary background music?
Here's an idea: What if we had a war in which robots fought eachother, total number of robots lost in the battle field tallied, then real humans put in gas chambers and killed to simulate the loss? Great idea if ask me !
Coming to American Homeland in 2012. So F'd Up.

Where you at robots?
Ohhh please
If our brains were so simple we could understand them we would be so simple we wouldn't be able to. Something simler may aply to computers.
Fault lines proudly sponsored by apple...ridiculous...
And then man created Geth.
Only if your a Nieve! And Slow! (thats a given).
11:08 enemy UAV inbound.

I say we spend all of the military based money instead on Rita J. King love bot.
Uncle Sam's tech will dominate all.........................
How many more Apple product shots can you fit in a docu?
The future is here....
Ok picture this scenario ,a drone attack on NY ??? different thing now isnt it ,no difference at all in my book ,in fact more deserved
Probably wouldn't be a glitch... Most likely a video game nerd on a power trip.
@willythewildwino
i don't think you know what it is to live behind a shield.
Skynet is coming!!!
What is the music theme at the opening please?
I was going to comment about that. The theme song sounds good
911 = Drones
The use of drones is effective. Cowardice has nothing to do with it, it's only about killing.
wow I always thought Al Jazeera was some Propaganda Stuff... but this report is pretty awesome!
Thats a Strange comment. do u work for Alex Jones?

leave the wars to man, america is killing the tradition of man vs man
16:00 robots are fucking awesome
And Americans claim zyclon b is despicable.
