Those Cheetahs look more confused than anything. Usually when they attack their prey they go for the neck or throat to suffocate it. They were both looking at that robot like "Dude, this thing doesn't even have a head"

cheetah acted exactly as a cheetah acts, the way this went down was reminiscent of a honey badger vs a big cat, but i think this was scarier for the cat as it doesn't have it within its Rolodex of instinct that an animal who stands up to them keeps moving its feet ,or maybe that was the part that calmed them down, as it might have signaled "i am standing up for myself but have no intent to harm you"

Can’t tell if it’s back it’s turned or not, or where it’s vulnerable. It’s just basically an intimidation and assessment situation, but no return on investment on the intimidation factor so assessment is a ???
From the cheetah perspective, this would be the equivalent to a horror movie scene. A headless creature with jerky unpredictable movements invading your space.
Yes, the cheetah responded like any other animal would (including humans) to a novel object- with caution and curiosity. Once the animal got used to the robot his behavior would be different.
I believe the Cheetahs behaved like that because the robot gave no sign of fear whatsoever. Those animals are fine tuned into smelling and seeing reactions in their prey. They could even be able to smell hormonal changes. So if they see no fear response then that signals that the robot is stronger or more dangerous than them, which in turn makes them fear it. That's quite fascinating to observe. Makes me think the whole predator/prey interaction is such a dance. I also loved how at the beginning the 2 cheetahs passed walking as like they were dancing, they were sinched. Metal robot met flesh robots. Very cool!
It's instinct to react with fear/caution in unknown interactions with a strange creature. Best to retreat and avoid direct contact than potentially get hurt. Also why humans aren't ready for aliens lol.
nothing like that .. animals react with caution to what they dont know .. there is a video of a man laying down in front of a clan of lions and they didnt dare to attack .. because they dont know what to expect .. and the human himself does not show fear .

The kids screaming certainly didn’t help the stressful situation. Having cheetahs defend their territory from something unfamiliar is fine and scratches that instinctual itch. However having the the children yell and observe at that time was halfwitted.
Actually, I'm sure they're used to the kids. NOT having them making noise would have been a change in their environment, thus invalidating the test. Remember, these are not wild savannah cats. They're in a zoo.
@@kmcd6140 Theyre not domesticated, theyre captured. They dont have a choice weather a bunch of kids scream at them or not. If this was truly for "science" they would have told the children to quite down. This was just for shits and gigs. Not really a test.
@@fight4ourright306 Nope, not domesticated. Never said they were. They live in a zoo. Probably born and raised. This is home. To remove the kids is a change to their environment. Whether you believe in the good work that zoos do is irrelevant. This is what they know. The handlers were there to ensure the cats didn't harm the device or themselves, and the pilot did their best to test reaction ranges. You can hear them talking about using the device to get an aggressive animal to back off w/o harm. The cats can't understand the kids. They hear yelling and honking, and whatever else all day, every day. If the kids weren't cheering for the cheetah to attack, it wouldn't be a normal day for them. Now, did the pilot show off for the camera? Maybe. That "sit up and beg" move at the end was pretty cute. The big tom seems to chill a bit at that point, too.
True that. Cheetahs are flighty and delicate animals anyway, they have to be cautious because for a wild cheetah, a debilitating injury is a death sentence.
What if the saviour of their race was a cheetah named john, then imagine sending a robot cheetah to the past a hybrid cheetah to the future and that shit goes on and on
Doesn't it make you appreciate how beautiful our animals are on this planet. Look at that man made thing & how it moves, & then look at how beautiful these real animals are & the way they move. That's what i get from watching this, just how beautiful mother nature really is.
Yup. Just like how a woman is intrinsically “female” without trying, compared to the man made thing of a man in a dress. Our brains spot the weirdness and artificiality in the same exact way that these cheetahs did.
Can't believe they've spent thousands of dollars to build that advanced robot using all the latest software and machinery but they don't have enough funds to film this without all the shaking and low resolution at times.
It's simply a question of priorities. Money spent on filming what is basically just a stunt, is money that can't be spent on improving the robot. It's no different that flat-earthers whining about the lack of HD video of space-flight operations. "Sorry, but we have more important things to do with our budget than cater to low-IQ morons!"
I think what explains the cats reaction is the robodog wasn't acting like prey and so It didn't trigger an attack response or chase. Plus these cats are well fed and not wild and starving
As someone with no expertise but love for animals I'd agree is the same behavior you see in videos of honey badgers and wolverines were even tho the other animal is bigger the lack of response in a "prey" throws off the instinct of hunting and brings a more cautious behavior from the hunter.
Or the cats aren’t stupid and think they can eat something that clearly isn’t food😂 they can see with detail and color just like we can. They aren’t stupid by any means.
Cheetahs also have a much more limited diet than other cats. Put it in a leopards den and you’ll have a different reaction. Cheetahs won’t even eat a human
It's because the robot they're using is a piece of crap and it needs to keep its legs moving in order to figure out what the footings like to keep from falling over... It's what the piece of crap Chinese copies did before they managed to steal a copy of Boston Dynamics software and make that little routine stop. The cheetahs wouldn't have freaked out so much with Boston Dynamics Spot, thats for sure.
That robot dog is a truly impressive piece of technology, maybe one day there will be a camera that doesn’t shake and lose focus throughout the whole video.
Yeah, funny that they can create this highly sophisticated robot, but do worse filming the encounter than a mom holding her baby and filming the older kids at the zoo.
@wade hi mate from Australia- unplanned, cheetah test on a walkabout the zoo and those fu***** kids- we agree but it was a research test with no idea our little video would become so popular- We will do better next !!!1

They live in a zoo. I bet it would be way more scary to hear kids screaming all day every day but hear nothing the second that thing walks in. Sounds like a horror movie tbh lmaooo
@@krashd lmao it's a zoo? Like, zoos are literally are a place for children to learn about animals. I'm sure being in a little cage is shitty too, but most of these animals cannot go back into the wild without dying, so would you rather they be euthanized? Also, a lot of zoos do heavy conservation work for the animals that do live in the wild, especially dealing with repopulation of endangered animals. Don't forget that the animals in the zoo are ambassadors for their wild counterparts on top of not being suitable for release back into the wild. That's not even mentioning that these are big cats that would gladly eat these little screaming kids, not a rabbit who's heart can explode if you look at it directly for too long. A zoo is a place for children, stop being a Karen and go to a museum or reserve like an adult.
These animals can sense fear in their prey. I remember a story about a city boy who didn't know what lions looked like, this was before the internet, he tried to chase them and they feared him instead of attacking him. When asked why he was chasing them he said they were cows. If he knew they were lions he would have felt fear and in turn, would have caused the lions to attack him.
The thing here is that Cheetahs can not feel/smell the fear or any emotions from a Robodog cuz its a maschine, i think thats why they feel unsecure to approach and tear it apart.

I would freak out as well if a robodog kept tap dancing like that while following me around...it's not normal. Cheetah response was perfectly understandable. 😂
Cheetahs are lightly built single hunters. In the wild any injury that slows them for a few days means death. They have evolved to choose their targets very carefully and avoid confrontations that risk injury. They don’t know if this can hurt them so are being appropriately cautious.
States of transition of the cheetas' feelings: Leaps out and thinks, "I will get it" --> "Wait, what is it? And WHICH WAY IS IT FACING?" --> "Dang, it's stamping neurotically" --> "Oi! it's charging at me" --> "Nah... not worth it" --> "Shut up you noisy brat"
The robot's quick gait was like that of an excited puppy. Based on how calm the cats reacted, very likely that would treat the robodog as a friend/toy once they got used to it.
@@Durzo1259 At 3:14 the cat sits, then the robot sits upright for the first time. The cat maintains sitting position. Narrator "Well he seems to have calmed down."

It doesn't have a head or tail, and when they approach it, it turns toward and approaches them. They are conflicted on wheather to chase it or run from it
That's a very interesting idea. In that robots can be used to distract the animals in a situation where staff have an important mission within the enclosure. The animals might respond in a more favorable way when confronted with something that moves similar to animals they would normally eat - but because it's behavior is so different the animal will constantly observe the robot to take in all that movement information.
Their claws can support their body weight when they climb trees and i also doubt the exterior of the robot is metal, it probably has a metal skeleton with a plastic shell they would be fine.

I am positive it added to the stress the animals were experiencing while trying to interact with a foreign object. My suggestion would be to try again in an different environment.
They are what we would call....paying customers who allow us to invent cute machines. No crowd, no money...
My guess is children yelling is those cheetahs natural habitat now sadly. They are probably more used to that then to silence.
Kids are basically wild animals so I don’t see the problem

Without a doubt, that's the world's most expensive cat toy.

The cheetahs are smart and correct to keep their distance. They don't yet know if this thing is venomous, and what threats it poses.

As someone with no expertise but love for animals I'd agree is the same behavior you see in videos of honey badgers and wolverines were even tho the other animal is bigger the lack of response in a "prey" throws off the instinct of hunting and brings a more cautious behavior from the hunter.
