Tha ending fight was probably the weakest part of the movie. The entire time this monster is being built up as this menacing and dangerous creature and then this giant monster puts up basically no fight against this human who just pokes him with a stick a few times. But they didn’t do a good job of explaining the rules of the Wendigo - why did the satchels keep him in the attic? Did the satchels keep it in the mines originally? Does seeing the Wendigo cause infection or getting scratched by it? The vague details of it really hindered the effectiveness of the creature. Plus her story did not tie in well enough with Lucas’ struggle

And back to the point of it needing to be satiated to be weak - it ate the first officer that showed up so wouldn’t that make it weaker? Wouldn’t that have allowed Jesse Plemmons to shoot it? Once again it comes down to poor world building - and yes, I agree the build up was to a massive let down.

Movies ruin all suspense and scare when they take time to sit the protagonists down and say "This is the monster, it came from this ancient legend, oh and here is how you beat it ect" No one cares that the monster is a wendigo. You can look up the legend on your own time. The short story is much scarier cause we have no idea what the boy is dealing with, and its just him alone in his house feeding a monster in the basement.

    • @denneyalexander2115
      @denneyalexander2115 3 года назад

@@jakeryan2805 Agreed. I hate how modern-day horror movies are always explaining the monster/antagonist in their films. They think it somehow makes them scarier with exposition, but really it does the exact opposite - because when you take away the mystery behind something, you make it "understandable", and when something's understood, it becomes defeatable. That's why the fear of the dark is the most prominent fear out there - especially for adults, because it's not actually the darkness that frightens folks, but their inability to know what's there that strikes fear. It's why the fear of spiders and boogeymen are more common in children than adults, because once someone understands how harmless spiders are and how the monster in the closet isn't real, the fear they once had for them diminishes.
It's basically why my most favorite horror movies are Alien (1979) and The Thing (1982) because they don't have an exposition character suddenly show up and explain what the monster is about. The characters in the movie know just as much about the monsters they're fighting as you do, and what they learn about them is done so by trial-and-error and what you are observing alongside them. It's good horror and movie-making done right.

To me, killing the child, that was also a victim, could be like killing her past. She killed the big monster, her abuser, but the hardest is to kill the traumatic child still in her. It makes sense to me, I suffered from abuse before. And let me tell you, your traumas look like a huge fucking monster that you have to take one on one. You just don't have the choice.
As for the the teacher, I thought it made sense seing how she could see abuse when everybody closed their eyes on it. This is a very harsh reality that some people will see abuse and overlook it because nobody can do something. I think the abuse metaphor was very well played and was an important part. And for the Native... Wasn't it good ? I mean, Wendigo is a Natie legend, it should be told by a Native, plus it gives some exposition to these communities, not a lot, but still.
The only big criticism I had seeing it was that showing the monster as a monster takes away from the horror of the dad during his transformation. The fact that he was human was more horrifying and more realistic because abuses are committed by humans, not by monsters. Drugs and violence and rapes are not done by monster we can just kill, it is done by humans we trust and love and this is the most scary thing.

    SPOILERS
I personally have soo many complaints about this movie that I feel like it’s not even worth recommending to anyone. What is this movie for? What is it’s story thats its trying to tell us? What are we supposed to take away after watching it?
I’ve been looking forward to this movie since before covid myself, and I just watched it today. Needless to say, I don’t like it. Not saying i hated it, or that it didn’t keep me entertained and looking forward to see what happens next or anything, but that this movie to me, literally flopped. Felt like they built up a story and didn’t no which direction to go in and so what we ended up with is a movie about personal problems, a somewhat monster, family and a terrible ending in which none of these thing I’ve mentioned ever connect to one another effectively.
Ask me what this movie is about and I wouldn’t know what to say. I can’t say its a monster movie because the people who died were minimum and they died in away where they were literally asking to be killed.
The teacher projected her family problems onto the movie itself making it seem like the kids father is a bad guy and making the entire movie feel like we should have pity for this malnutritioned kid.
The kid literally changed character at the very end of the movie from being all about family to letting his family get murdered. Just why?? When?? Where was it that made this kid have a change of heart to literally backstab his family??
Why was the teacher’s brother begging her to take him with her to the mine at the end of the film after he’s been injured?? He did absolutely nothing. Why was e there?????????
Why wasn’t the teacher one shot by the wendigo?? Literally everyone in the film was one shotted by it. But by all means not this teacher, nope she has the knowledge/training/techniques to take this thing on and beat it…I am lying btw, she has none of those things yet she still fucking wins?? Tf
And the biggest complaint, why tf did the kid keep going to school?? Yeah the teacher projected saying “its a cry for help” but the kid’s character saids otherwise. Nothing about the kids character says “help me.” He is literally cleaning up murder to protect his family. Lol
Sorry for the spoilers but for someone’s who’s been waiting a long time for a good movie, this really disappointed me. We literally learned nothing about the teacher backstory but there were two jump scares where she screamed out of panic because of her childhood. What the fuck happened to her?? We learn a little bit but why should I care? How does this help the overarching story?? I’ll tell you how, it doesn’t. It was half ass. If it was better utilize I wouldn’t be complaining.
And then her brother says to her “you dont know what father did to me” and I’m all like “yeah me either, what did he do??”
Soo much family problems to our main characters but nothing is explained, let alone shown to us besides bits and pieces that leads nowhere.
Anyways more importantly, WHERE THE FUCK IS THE WENDIGO THAT STARTED THIS ENTIRE MOVIE?????!?!
Seriously where the fuck is he or she?? What is their story?? Lol I swear this film could of been sooooo much better if they just told a straight forward story. But it doesn’t, it wants to tell a bunch of different stories that fail to connect in my eyes.
why was this movie made? What message are they trying to tell us? What am I supposed to take away from watching this because this story tells me nothing.
Honestly i would of been fine if the kid stabbed the teacher. He should have, it fits his character. He wants to help his family. But on top of forcing the teacher to kill the wendigo(literally wtf, how?? What makes her more special than a trained cop who was one shotted mind you) they also force a happy ending where the kid changes sides last minute for no reason whatsoever.
Yeah I get it, his side was the bad side, but you can’t just make someone go from the bad side to the good side for no reason and expect not to have any complaints. Its forced. This movie is forced.
Why is the movie about a wendigo? He could of been a zombie and the story wouldn’t have been ANY different. So what story are they trying to tell us? What are we supposed to take away.
Anyways I’m done venting. If you want a way better movie to watch that is somewhat similar due to its monster, I highly recommend “The Ritual”

I feel like they should’ve had MORE Wendigo, which is strange because usually with horror movies its the opposite. But yeah the ending is extremely underwhelming, like this huge hulking beast who killed cops and grown men, and gravely injured another cop, is just killed by this random women who just learned about the Wendigo. The main character was also lacking A LOT. I feel that if the native man was the main character, or just a native person, the movie would not only have much needed native representation, but the fact that a native man is the one who kills the Wendigo would make much more sense than a random girl who just learned what a Wendigo is.

This film is based on the story "The Quiet Boy", written by Nick Antosca.
This will be the third time for Jesse Plemons playing the role of a sheriff, he previously played a sheriff in American Made (2017) and Game Night (2018).
The first film directed by Scott Cooper since Crazy Heart (2009) not to have Masanobu Takayanagi as the director of photography as well as Cooper's first digitally shot film.
Jay Brazeau, who plays a doctor in the film, was also in the similarly-named 2013 film "Horns."
The film features a 'Wendigo', a cannibalistic creature of Native American (Algonquin) folklore.
A Wendigo is also featured in Stephen King's Pet Sematary, however, is largely unseen and in the background influencing the characters actions.

The monster we follow in this movie is the dad after he's transformed. But in the beginning he and his meth buddy got attacked in the mine by one too. But that ending is super dark to show to audiences and would have to ultimately change it to what we have. It would have turned into a situation like The Descent and Funny Games, both of which are not produced in America and their endings had to be changed into a more "hopeful", not in Funny Games, but it did in The Descent.

I get that there is allegory in the writing but when you combine that with the actual situation that is going on, her character was no longer believable and borderline cartoony. I would say that it is nice to see the subject of the wendigo given some attention and it's form was visually impressive too. I wouldn't have given it 7/10 though. It would seem to me that if the movie turned into a mess or got worse as it went on and it had started with some silly message either veneered on or just beneath the surface about *something entirely unrelated* then the message got in the way of the story and, ultimately, ruined it. Perhaps the writer/director had no clue as to how to tie the two together, or how to continue on with the message while simultaneously making it a horror film about a wendigo... and that's pretty important, if you ask me. What's the point in a message if it ruins, stalls or stonewalls your movie? What's the point in a horror movie if a message takes more priority over any part of the movie itself? I would imagine that, in most cases, it is best to stick with your movie and what your movie is supposed to be about and to deliver an *experience*, not a *message*. I think Alex nails it.

@@jaykay1899 I’m agreeing on the part where he said most movies get too much into political agendas. Yes. Leave that crap out of movies because we don’t care. I just walked out of this movie and my first thought was ...where are the Joes... I’m angry! 🤣 great start but it went in too many different directions! Too many messages and it needed better focus towards the end. Now I’m waiting on The Black Phone

A 4 ?!? Lol smh bruh cmon… this movie was honestly shockingly good yeah the script isn’t like amazing but every other aspect of this movie is real close to masterpiece level. The cinematography alone puts this above soooo many new horror movies. This honestly might be the most well shot horror movie in a while the atmosphere too just all soo good. And it’s weird too because it’s actually pretty accessible idk joe needs to get some new reviewers who actually appreciate or at least acknowledge things like directing and cinematography they alwayyyssss brush it to the side when Joe talks about it it’s so annoying. Theres more aspects to a movie besides just the story but I digress.

I LOVED this movie, one of my all time favorites, it reminded me of the "golden oldies" like The Relic or Mimic. This reminded me of how how slow burn horror movies USED to be made, didnt rely on cheap jump scares or anything like that. The fact the kid still tried to take care of his dad and brother all the way till the end was terrifying itself, and the kid actor KILLED it.
EDIT: ONLY wish i had, was i wish Del Toro had more hands on with it.
