I can tell what’s being played when, and it aids in distinguishing the Kick from the Floor Tom in those intro fills. I’m actually starting to pick up some reading skills by attrition, so that’s a Plus!

I'm playing this on Sunday with rehearsal tomorrow. Two questions: do you only hit the crash cymbal if the keyboard/guitar hits the unbeat? I've seen it where they just stay on down beat.
You can always simplify a beat to anything you like so long as it's in time, but it won't feel as appropriate. There's no way around practicing to increase your vocabulary - can be done but takes time! Try working on it just one beat at a time slowly and loop that with a metronome, then the next beat, two together, and so on.
