An Unlikely Bargain Watch - A. Lange & Söhne vs Patek Philippe | Watchfinder & Co.

- I’ll level with you-it’s hard to pitch a wristwatch that costs £40,000 as a bargain, but there’s a logic to the suggestion that an A. Lange & Söhne sitting in that price bracket presents something of a value opportunity-albeit to a very select few. Tell you what, let’s take this back a step and start by looking at a watch that just might be the quintessential endgame piece: the Patek Philippe 5146. All will make sense very soon.

How come everything from Lange is so crisp, popped out, well finished. it's like the first time ever you saw an HD TV
German engineering
best way to describe it
I think Patek Philippe has become more mainstream lately and has lost a little exclusively (especially if you factor in Raps currently love affair with the brand). However it will keep its value better. A.Lang @ Söhne really feels like a private club not only because of the units they produce per year but the type of people the brand attracts. I am for the A.L.S
Lange will be my pick......
Same. I appreciate PP's history and heritage, but A&S just looks so much nicer.
@Lemtem Poktui
Is the unspoken charm that make me so attracted to Lange. Pls don't get me wrong PP is a very well respected brand. But Lange.... Omg always never failed to charm me. The day I owned a Lange will be the day I can tell myself I have completed my watches collection. I'm alway started to drool whenever I start talking about Lange. I'm know I will sounded crazy but watch geeks will understand.
Alvin Aw which is your favorite lange
@JUNYIN ONG
Lange 1
Nice
Langematik is my grail, it’s also the wallpaper on my computer.
I would take the Lange over the Patek any day.
Shawn B id choose a daniels over either.
Casio for me, cos I'm broke atm
i would take any lange over any patek any day
Shawn Beckett Are you on crack?
@@redpillsociety6479 If he is I would like a lifetime’s supply of that crack
They cost the same price as the rubber straps for Richard Milles.
Richard milles looks like a pile of butts though
Richard milles is a fashion, no matter how well they are engineered and soon will be undesirable
They actually DO cost a bit less than a Richard Mille titanium bracelt ~$65,000
Norse, sounds like a decent price for titanium nower days
I like Richard Mille.. and about the price.. if you have that kind of money for a watch.. you just don't care.. Well I go back to saving for a Seiko automatic..
The perfection on the. A.Lange is mesmerizing
The production level of your videos are by far the best on RUclips. God you're awesome. Keep up the magnificent work
A particularly refined and professional presentation: concise without being stodgy, in-depth without drowning in details. And for me, there's no contest: the A. Lange und Söhne takes the crown.
Lange really speaks to me. The attention to detail, the oversized date window, the embellishments of their incredible movements, the materials they use, even the leather bracelet. It’s all my style.
The design language feels like it’s all for the pursuit of and for the sake of excellence. Cachet follows from that as a byproduct, not as a focal point. Many watches pursue excellence for the cachet or simply pursue cachet. These both are the spiritual opposite of Jacob and Co, but the Lange most of all.
Be right back...I'm just gonna sell my house real quick
That Langematik is my absolute grail watch!
Ok, I am an American. I've visited one of the most prestigious & top-of-the-line Swiss Watchmaker Boutique on the 5th Avenue in NY. The sales director told me in person that, compared to the most of Swiss Watchmakers brands available on the market, Patek is, undoubtedly even for the people in the industry, "overpriced" - it is exactly the word she says and I quote. She does say that if we have to make a choice between PP and A.Lange, take A.Lange. However, if we have to choose PP, A. Lange, and her brand, choose hers. So turns out she's right. I have chosen A. Lange and her brand. And I am very happy!
The PP is a luxury piece; the Lange is an art piece.
Both are both. Both are super expensive and both are designed and crafted by some of the best artisans in the world.
nicely put!
When you compare, l feel like the the Lange is trying just a little too hard to impress
@@stephens2r338 I absolutely agree. It's as if it needs to be extra flashy or complicated to even be compared to a Patek Philippe. That's not to say that Patek Philippe doesn't try, because they make the most complicated, precise, and exquisite watches on the planet, but in this comparison I feel like the A. Lange is trying too hard. I still adore both, but side by side I see it as A. Lange trying it's absolute best to impress while Patek Philippe is sitting there like a Chinese Monk. It knows that it's got it together in the most humble and modest way possible.
@@AndreasTunney 👏👏👏
Why would the name A. Lange & Söhne hint that it's from Germany and not from Switzerland? We Swiss also speak German ;)
probably cause people who buy these know what Lange is
Kinda. ;)
Its a well known German company, maybe that's why
I wonder why they call it a hint..
Maybe because the big swiss brands are (sounds to me like) french-swiss i.e patek philippe, VC and all the others.
Wow, the A.lange & Sohne is so so beautiful! I am dreaming of having it.
Wow, I didn't think it was possible but you guys brought it up another notch! Superb work as usual watchfinder.....now, if I could only afford one of the watches you review....
Can you please review a Nomos sometime in the near future? ???
One more review of a Nomos won't hurt anyone, in fact they have been proven to extend ones longevity hahaha
Is it just me or does the PP look bland in comparison?
Kacper Uminski As much as I respect PP, I have to agree...but that’s their MO. PP isn’t really an emotive or exciting brand.
jason starek Cough... Sky Moon Tourbillion ... cough. :)
Langs attention to detail is consistent from the cheapest to the most expensive models .
Kacper Uminski it you. The PP is elegant and on my wrist
kacper uminski compared to breguet, both lacks bland
It's hard to think about A. Lange and Söhne as a bargain in any other context, but this instance I would fully agree. A beautiful watch, impeccable quality and attention to details second to none. That's a holy watch grail.
Just wanted to thank you for helping me making the decision, I ended up getting a 15 years old yellow gold Langematik Perpetual in PA, USA, for a considerably lesser amount than your offering 5 years younger...Hope when the time comes for me to get a FPJ that chez vous has something better. MCC
I could watch these videos all day long.
I like the A. Lange & Söhne. It feels like an instrument rather than a piece of jewelry. The Germans are more than capable of producing world class _anything,_ and that includes world class watches. The Patek Philippe is a beautiful watch, to be sure. And an engineering marvel. The German effort just happens to scratch all the right places for me.
I'd most definitely go with Lange between the two.
It would have been much harder to choose if the Patek were a 5140 or 5327
Wind S.H naaah this is better
Annual calendar can never compare to a perpetual calendar.
idk why but i prefer Vacheron and lange over patek Philippe. I just think they look better
great thing about the two are that they are perfecting the 39mm and not joining the race against a wall clock like other brands. The bigger the watch goes beyond 39mm, the cheaper they look.
Lol I couldn't care less if it's not swiss, like if I were not to consider a sports car for not being Italian.
Sports car? German again...
Lange needs to be part of the holy trinity of watches. The Lange has a better layout, easier to read, more beautiful to look at, etc. etc. etc.
Lange beats out the 5146... So much more bang for buck. Anyone else feel the speaker made the micro-rotor seem less impressive when in reality it is a more precise/difficult feature?
If only i had some money, I would buy both, because maaaan they are beautiful
The amount of time and effort YOU spend buffing out these watches is mind blowing.
Lange should be respected, Patek looks like cheap supermarket watch specially date window , lange has symmetrical elegant hands and sub registers looks beautiful !!!!
I'd pick the A.Lange and soehe
"Mechanically memorized for the next 80 years" 🤯
Looks wise I like the PP better here because of simplicity and that beautiful lacquer dial. However, ALS has better complications in this watch.
So basically someone would have to sacrifice one or the other? If you want brand recognition go with Patek since it will hold its value but if you want to have that higher Complication you would have to go with A.Lange.
There is a limited of 100 honey gold edition is for sale now with a slightly upgraded dial...It is stunning and beautiful watch...I think way under recognized.
Between these two, without blinking an eye - Lange
This is watchfinder at its best
Come on lucky lotto numbers. I really really like that ALS perpetual calendar.
really into Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar - Ref. 720.025. Could you have a review on it plz?
I know nothing about watch engineering, so even if the A. Lange und Söhne watches had crap inside them, they always look better than their opposition from VC or PP. The 1815 in particular is simply perfect.
That power reserve display would drive me mad being asymmetric unless at half reserve. I also don't like all gold, great video.
The best annual calender is always the one working in both directions. Sending the watch in just to have a mistake in setting the date beeing reversed is not acceptable at all. And A. Lange all the way!
When that beat hits it relaxes me so much
A Lange and Sohne for sure. Its design is more industrial for me.
for me easy choice, this is my dream Patek.
When the living legend Philippe Dufour is wearing an A Lange
Did you not mention the ALS has what appears to be a second time displayed/GMT function? Did you not show a wrist shot of the ALS? Are both watches “hack able”?
So an endgame watch is a watch I wouldn't want to take off. That's literally my g-shock 5600. If I had either the PP or the Lange (I prefer the lange tho), the bank's vault is where I would keep it until the next friend/family wedding or funeral.
bazdu Haha! Well said
Honestly the Patek looks as bland as a Nomos next to the Holy ALS
Wow 2.30 that burr on hand of patek or bad finishing is just unforgiving, citizen has beter finish....
Patek is strong name, but to me any vacheron with geneva seal is miles ahead.
And lange, well they are fantastic, numero uno!
Both Amazing! PP in this case finishing on the dial is so simple, charming and elegant. It oozes style in an understated way.
Could you compare Datograph Perpetual and 1815 Rattrapant Perpetual ?
For that $$$, I would choose a Perpetual Calendar over an Annual any day.
the Lange is my Grail watch
The city of glashütte has also some tradition in watchmaking, not only switzerland. Probably not as long as the swiss but it dates back to 1845 when Adolf Lange .....
From the thumbnail already you can tell that the right one is a lange bc it is the only good looking watch in the picture
Wouldn’t the 1815 annual calendar have been a more suitable comparison?
Yeah this seems like a strange matchup between the watches, especially since the Lange costs ~$10-20k more. But I believe this channel is promoting a watch store so they're probably pulling from what they have on hand for most of the videos.
The Saxonia annual calendar is a better comparison. Both being automatic. The 1815 is manual wound.
You mean Saxon’s not 1815?
S-stop making sense! PRAISE A. LANGE!!!
@@MJ-zd7yw That is precisely what I was expecting, given their obvious similarities (and having tried both on just a couple of days ago). I preferred the Lange, though I did find the Pateks stunning.
Same price, I will chose A Lange 99% of the time.
Dials are hard to read on both
Why these watches are so beautiful? I would be afraid to wear one of them in the street.
I'd be afraid to own one and have it inside a Swiss bank safe. But, man, are they beautiful.
Safe deposit box queens.... Like some luxury sports cars. Garage queens
If you can spend that kind of money I wouldnt think that you would be waling alot in the streets, most likely you will be driven around in a MB S class or BMW 7 series
all you have to do is insure it. then there's no concern.
Pensi0nar that's why you should always go with white gold. Way more discrete.
So how much is the damn Lange? I want it. Now.
I totally like the A.Lange better. Though this compares a world of watches I would never feel comfortable owning. Down payment on a home on your wrist.
Lange wins this one. Should've featured Patek 3940, now that's a competition.
Great Review and almost everyone would go for A.Lange , German quality and engineering , the Greatest watch .
Collectors are willing to pay any price for watches , I think that a true collector would pick either one based on what he appreciates the most the , history ( both of them have history ) both are highly made watches or horology time pieces , but when it comes to details , A Lange & Söhne has no competition here . Yes Patek is Swiss , but Lange is German perfectionism. A true collector with that kind of money will not get the Patek cuz it's Swiss, he's get the Lange ... or wait a true collector with that kind of money would get both of them.
A Lange holds the ace and betters most things from the Jura mountain. A Lange provokes emotions!
l like the German one ...here anyway. l know little about watches, and have just started to learn. l've seen the 2 million $ Chiming Patek with a face you can flip to wear the other way. Their advertisement showing how it was made ....put to a _great_ jazz fusion piece BLEW ME AWAY! l just love learning about watches!!!!
I have started to love ALS simply because it's not Swiss and owning it would be a statement of your watch collection game.
Given the funds I wouldn’t have any problem picking a Lange over a Patek. But then given the funds I’d get both! Anyway, apart from their steel sports watches, all other Patek’s including this one, don’t look good on a bracelet.
Lange is.. So much more beautiful... And it's also incredibly sexy too... Though I'm poor, I can't buy either... .😭😭
I honestly couldn't choose between them, they are both stunning examples of the watchmakers craft! It would have to be a white gold or Platinum version for me though!
A. Lange & Söhne, definitely. The only Patek I really like are one those vintage calatravas that's 34 or 35mm (I can't remember). With those beautiful printed gold hour markers on a plane white dial and simple stick hands without the seconds (Sorry I need to look up the ref number after writing this). That watch just screams beauty and class to me.
Would love to see a hands on review of the black bay 58. You could do comparison between it and the previous black bay to show how drastic the changes are in size
The Lange just looks so much cleaner and better. PP better watch out, give it another 20 years and ALH will be the new PP.
The video is so fresh that it is 360p. I will wait a little bit for the HD to come.
I wish the 5146 had the double date, just like this Lange
And the leap year
Is it just me or are the day/month indicators on the patek hard to read?
Personally I would go with the A.Lange & Sohne
My pick will be the JLC Q1612520 costs half the price of both. Having the elegance of the A. Lange, keeping the complication of the perpetual and the swiss name.
I don't get why Jaeger LeCoultre gets so little mention. They only have made movements for practically all major brands and in terms of mechanical watch technology they are unmatched.
That ALS movement is mesmerizing, the color of the German silver is beautiful, different from the traditional Swiss Rodium plated.
Love Lange was invited to a workshop in the Netherlands, but, with the perfect bracelet that comes with PP . He wins, PP for me in this case
Two premium brands..... The comparison is a little unjust as a perpetual calendar shall b compared to a perpetual calendar. Similarly an annual calendar should b compared to annual calendar.
AL&S in this case wins but PP is a PP
Thank you for another beautifully shot, and thought provoking video. Is it time yet to replace AP with Lange in the holy trinity? 😅
I am a big fan of the Patek make no mistake about it. But the only reason I would go for a Patek over a A Lange is that it holds it's value best among all watches. In all other sense including fit and finish and the watch A Lange are better watch makers than Patek
Drool...both incredibly beautiful. I have tried both brands on and ALS has always won in my mind. The movements and dial are stunning.
Any day I would go for her A Lange Perpetual...
Is that am imperfection on the PP on the left hand sub dial under the T ?
4:35 Its not a patek phillipe? come on I'd buy it coz it Lange. Amazing video.
As always, great review. Please review GO panograph (in steel).
These watches look so good.
I personally love this Patek precise my taste
I wish you can compare the scarcity, craftsmanship, innovation, beauty, size, movement, dial, resale investment value of
Patek 3970, Patek 5970 and Langematik Perpetual.
Can you do a full review of the Patek Phillipe Calatrava Series please? :)
I respect PP for their history and amazing craftsmanship, but I actually don't like the majority of their line. A. Lang & Sohne on the other hand, I enjoy the styling of almost all their pieces. These two examples are no exception. I would take the Lang hands down over the Patek.
A video on FP. Journe or Greubel Forsey would be awesome!
Big fan of this channel. Could you please review the Piaget Polo S? I think of it as a placeholder for the Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711, and it is an in-house movement from a prestigious watchmaking house with great history. Is it really a worthwhile bargain?
If Lange made this watch with a 'wider' crown... Not a thicker crown (horizontally away from the dial) but wider north to south, and say 37.5 x 9.5mm... My bank account would be missing a digit or two.
