    Fantastic analysis 💯 The "anti-male" criticism against this film is such an utterly misguided and bad faith argument. Greta Gerwig & Noah Baumbach could have EASILY written Ken to be some evil one-dimensional misogynistic scumbag, but did they do that? ...No. They did not. They gave him depth and made him sympathetic. He had his own entire character arc that was just as prevalent throughout the film as Barbie's. An arc that ends with the character learning that he must learn to be his own man without pining for the attention and validation of women... How on earth is this an anti-male message? So many folks completely missed the point.

      It doesn't put him in a better position than the one he was in the start of the movie. Barbie Land still runs as a matriarchy, Kens' have a mock jury system that the Barbies are thinking of providing them, and Ken lost his connection to Barbie. None of it has answered the problems Ken have, but provided false and temporary comfort. No room for them to flourish in a land shared by 2 sexes. So then, what positive changed came out for the male Barbies?
      It could be that it's just a movie about Barbies and only that. Nothing more.

    • @dante340
      @dante340 Год назад +24

      @@yalldrink_oca_ola253 Yes, Barbieland continues to operate as a matriarchy but that's because it's Barbieland. It's a fantasy world constructed from girls' imaginations. This is why, even after reclaiming power in Barbieland, Barbie still chooses to leave that fantasy world because it's ultimately shallow and artificial.
      Also, I personally didn't feel like the Kens were given no room to flourish at the end, but who knows.

    The way I saw it, Ken's arc is actually a perfect illustration of male adolescence. Obviously Ryan Gosling is a fully grown man Lol but that's what makes his performance so brilliant! He portrays Ken in such a childlike and easily impressionable way. Because of this, it makes perfect sense how & why Ken was inclined to go a tad overboard when he first begins to get a sense of his own power and agency.

      Barbie is also a representation of a girl going thru puberty remember how her feet went flat that's a change in her body she asked about if you ever thought about death that's a change of mentality. She goes to "the real world" her and ken and ken comes back with new information about new stuff to the boys that he learned kinda like how when you ask your older brother about girls or see him hang out with friends probably smoking weed or something he takes that back and doesn't realize you're taking it another level because you're a young kid trying to figure out what it is to be a man. Barbie at the end decides she wants to be a woman not a Barbie doll so this is a coming of age movie. You're one of the few people who realized what this movie is about I applaud you sir. I realized this first watch and shook my head when people said so many ridiculous meanings like girls breaking up with their bfs that's when I realized I shouldn't feel ashamed I didn't go to college lol

    The very first scene is girls violently destroying baby dolls. Stanley Kubrick homage aside, that's straight up "we don't wanna be mothers anymore, even at the death of children" symbolism. I don't believe that's the feeling of the creators of the movie but it's right there in front of you and can be interpreted that way by many.

    • @robynology101
      @robynology101 Год назад +9

      I took it differently. Those little girls had only baby dolls to play with since the beginning of time. They enjoyed it, but eventually the little girls wanted more. That’s what Barbie symbolizes-the woman as a fully actualized being. Little girls are not just here to be future mothers. Women can also pursue other roles apart from (and in addition to) motherhood. Many women and girls want to be more. Barbie can be “anything”. That’s why she became so radical and inspirational.

      Similar to a fine painting in a museum that people stand around and look at wondering "What does it mean?" Only the artist really knows the answer. The same thing applies to this film. In the Barbie movie, an alternate perspective emerges where Ken finds himself as a second-class citizen and essentially a slave in his world. As he embarks on a journey to uncharted lands, he witnesses a society that values empathy and emotional intelligence, in stark contrast to his own world. This experience compels Ken to return and save even his enemies, showcasing his empathetic and loving nature. Meanwhile, the Barbies resort to manipulation and gaslighting to regain their power, highlighting a dichotomy between the Kens' warmth and the Barbies' cold and distant behavior. This portrayal underscores a point about the Kens' capacity for empathy and connection, while the Barbies are depicted as lacking in these qualities, resembling sociopaths.

    Wanting the good sides of feminism while constantly ignoring the downsides (until they can't any longer) caused their problems.
    Feminists also seem to think men have it easy.

      I am reminded of this every time I see someone complaining about mens “double standard” for women. It’s just not true that any man wants this of a woman. Sure, some men value one thing, and other men value other things. Then women should find the man whose values align with their own. But of course the mistake, as is the case with any form of bigotry, is when they believe that it’s all men, that all men are saying all these things simultaneously.
      Same issue with “who created the patriarchy”. They’re mad at men who were long gone thousands of years ago. And they take it out on men who never oppressed anyone.

    I disagree about the feminist speech part. Women really have no standards to meet. They can go to college and get a job, be a waitress, be a stay at home mom, be a food stamp queen, and men will still pursue them and they’ll generally do pretty well. Men simply have to be successful and make a lot of money. And today men also have to be caregivers while their wife works and clean and cook… I’m the one who does everything. I’m the one to whom no job is too big or small. I have to vacuum the floors AND reroof the house. I take care of the kids and install new base mouldings. The women love to stay in their traditional gender rules as soon as they leave works
    This is a great video though. So much truth in here. Great job

    It's easy to dismiss Hollywood and everything they produce as feminist, propaganda, or both. I definitely dismissed Barbie as not worth my time.

      Eh from the movie and from the interviews with the creators and the response by mainstream media and social media of women to the movie it's pretty clear it was created as feminist propaganda. It's just that somehow they messed up and much of it can be read as satire making the movie enjoyable if watched from this perspective.
      Maybe some strands of modern feminism are just so ridiculous that it just seems like parody even when it is being completely sincere.

  • @annebomba
    @annebomba Год назад +4

    This is a pretty good analysis. Thank you.
    While the Barbie movie has a lot of good lessons for men in the years to come, it does end as a tragedy. I want to envision a version where it does not end in tragedy, but as a happy ending.
    If Ken had used violence on the Barbies, he could have instated a society where the Kens have the power, the Kendom. He does not want to do this, because he does not want to commit immoral acts. But because of this, Barbiedom is reinstated, ultimately handing over the power to the feminine polarity. This is a tragedy because this form of government is unbalanced.
    The ideal situation in a society should be a perfectly balanced mix between Kendom and Barbiedom. This does not mean that men and women have the same roles in society and everything should be 50/50, rather it means that the total amount of masculine power and the total amount of feminine power are equal. A mother, dancer or nurse can have as much power as a businessman or politician. It just looks different, is derived from different things, and functions differently than masculine forms of power. In today's society, power is almost solely defined by masculine standards. So when we are speaking of someone having power, we actually mean that someone has a masculine form of power. Feminine forms of power should be given more attention to correct this faulty idea of power in our society.
    The real world in this movie could be likened to the archetypal world of ideas. This is the "ideal" world you can visit and be inspired by, but it is not possible to actually live in it. This is why the Kens don't establish their Kendom in the real world and go live with the Barbies instead.
    Now, how would the Kens go about creating a balanced world of Kendom and Barbiedom? It is clear that violence is not an option. Also, giving speeches about the benefits of Kendom can work in the short run, but it creates Barbie rebellion in the long run. So this isn't an option either.
    The solution is hinted at in this movie. First of all, the Kens have to stop pursuing any kind of violent conflict, not just with Barbies but also amongst each other. They have to unite as brothers. The next step is to find themselves, go their own way, create their own meaning. This deepens the Kens and makes them stronger, but also has another payoff. The Barbies are starved of their attention and services if the Kens are going their own way. This is a moral way to push back to the Barbies.
    So the Barbies will starve and their society will disintegrate, and they will go to the Kens seeking help. Now the Kens have a proper bargaining position, and have to just make sure that while they give the Barbies their fair share, they won't ever let them dominate them again.
    I believe that political power is a more masculine form of power, so the Kens as a whole should naturally have more political power than the Barbies. I believe that social power is a more feminine form of power, so the Barbies as a whole should naturally have more social power than the Kens. Individuals can of course be exceptions to this general rule of fist.
    Let's fix this society boys!

      @@skullingtonfx4441 I agree that would be nice, but I have been hurt, betrayed and ignored so much that I have learned to expect nothing from women. I genuinely believe women are just as good as men, but in a completely different way. This good side of them won't ever come out when men are complaining about them or putting them under any kind of pressure to learn or to "be good". Men thrive under pressure, but women absolutely do not. Having no expectations is a difficult but healthy way to deal with this.
