For those wondering about battery life, playing Dragon Quest VIII at 2.5x resolution in Performance Mode (max CPU clocks) for an hour resulted in an 11% decrease in battery. Fan speed was set to low and CPU temp stayed at 42C. Based on that performance I would expect about 8-9 hours of battery in similar scenarios. twitter.com/RetroGameCorps/status/1705281243997405204
Have you tried EGGNS? It no longer requires a controller and seems to run better.
You should try dragons dogma switch emu skyline/yuzu when i played skyline worked better with custom Qualcomm drivers. You should also try dark souls through eggns. That would be 🔥
You should also play call of jauraz and super mario oddysee these games worked full speed on skyline/yuzu on my 150$ samsung s10+ snapdragon 855. I think you may need custom gpu drivers though for maximum performance. Persona 5 worked well to and with zelda botw i got a 20 fps avery on yuzu so emulation on weaker devices are getting better by the month.
Also skyline is no longer in development but yuzu is and we'll be getting strato emulator very soon and it'll be awesome.
You should definitely try vita emulation to.
That's a night and day difference. It's great that you manage to put this video very quickly so people can still choose to buy this one if that bug in performance was affecting their decision. Kudos Russ!
Yup, I knew there was something fishy going on when I saw it getting slightly worse performance than my Odin Lite (despite the D800 being significantly worse than the D1200), but I ended up just thinking it was an issue with the emulators at least being more optimized for the D800 specifically. Glad to hear I was wrong and that I definitely will be able to expect an upgrade in power alongside the battery life and Screen.
I was there yesterday when the troubleshooting happened and did not expect such a quick video. Amazing as always thank you Russ!
Russ can I just say that many of us recognize your work ethic as a reflection of ur integrity. This is why we trust and rely on ur advice. Thank u for showing that integrity is still very possible, even on platforms that sometimes reward sensationalism and cutting corners.
I 100% second this
Russ is the guy!
I love the diligence! Bringing out an addendum video when a significant improvement was found. Great job Russ, a winner is you 💚
This is a huge game changer, and I’m seriously tempted now to pick one of these up as an upgrade to my Retroid Pocket 3+
I'm waiting for the Odin 2 clear purple for the same. XD
Wow Russ, what a quick turn around! I’d almost considered canceling my order. Thank u for your work ethic in getting good information to us!
Wow Russ, you released this so quick after your previous video, your dedication to this community is so appreciated 🙏
Well done for acknowledging the issue and getting an update out so quickly
Literally just bought it last night, glad to see this update!
Ok, this is much better! D1200 is a pretty good CPU and now you (and the community) did justice to it :)
it is on par to a snapdragon 865. so this his like a s20 as a handheld with the ps vita dpad. Def a lil step up from on the odin lite. and odin
Thanks for going back and updating your review
Man, you are by far the best!
Love your job, and your dedication!
Cool! I absolutely like the fact you update the situation about emulation on a lot of devices, you know very well this environment and it takes patience.
I'm glad you were able to find out what the issue was and do an update. I'm super impressed with this device. I'm tempted to buy one. Lol
You are getting to work on this, we appreciate you as always, thanks again bud🔥🔥👍🏾 the one psp title I have had performance issues with is Dantes Inferno, so this fix will be a welcome one. 😊
You're the man Russ! Thank you so much for your dedication. Canceled my order for an Odin Pro for one of these for the GC/PS2 capibilities. Keep up the good work!
Great job with this update video. I cannot even imagine how many hours it took you to make this video.
I love the way you are honest with your content
Great comeback Russ, good job! Software bugs should really be ironed out before going to reviewers. At least it's been identified now so hopefully retail units already have the fix in place
I appreciate your efforts man keep up the great work
NICE! Videos such as this are the reason I really appreciate your channel. My previous comment was very disapproving of this handheld based on the GC & PS2 emulation at this price. My opinion has changed dramatically, however I think the prices might still be a tad to high. I still might consider getting this at it's current price since this is the only handheld that runs GC & PS2 for a more reasonable price. It provides exactly what I expect for a handheld emulation machine and no more.
What a simple fix! Thank you, Russ!
I purchased one of these so Im happy you found a fix and made a video on how to resolve the problem. I thougbt it was strange Taki Udon and other reviewers had much better performance results than yours.
Well, that's a relief. I wouldn't have ordered this one hadn't I believed it capable of fullspeed GC/PS2, so your review was a letdown. Thank you so much for the follow-up !
I’m glad you figured this out. I was kind of confused because my Odin Lite has a Dimensity 900 and it does GC and PS2 pretty darn good but I know the D1200 is a better chip so it didn’t make sense.
thanks for quick follow up! I am glad that i kept my order 😂
Thanks for doing this Russ. The review actually turned me away from this device because I mainly want to play PS2 and GameCube, so it’s good to know it was just a bug. Thanks again!!!
Great follow up video
Toggling cpu "High mode" off and on on my Anbernic RG556 has the same result. I could see a significant boost in CPU performance in my monitoring app. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for the update Russ 🙂 was getting worried 😟 has I purchased it
wow after the video yesterday I was considering canceling my preorder because performance was disappointing, but after seeing this I think I'll keep it.
Really impressive turnaround. I was surprised you did not try billy hatcher or chibi-robo.
Good catch. 8 hours of Dragon quest VIII on a single charge is mighty impressive!
Wow that bug is absolutely nuts. Totally changes the whole situation!
Russ, thank you seriously for such thorough coverage of handhelds. I wouldn’t doubt it’s thanks to your video yesterday that AYANEO put out this fix so quick.
Retro game corp is very happy to report 🎉
If anyone was wondering the fix for this issue was pushed out in a patch a few weeks ago, should no longer require retoggling the performance mode each time.
Cool, nice seeing this after i canceld my early bird preorder thanks to the first preview !_!
The Pocket S looks sick. Cant wait for that one
I expected this would happen, but sending the remote units without the optimizations was a mistake that’s going to hurt sales.
Thanks for making the quick update!
Okay, this has sold me on this. Gonna have to save up for it, maybe it'll replace my retroid pocket 3 plus
Mad respect, you spent a ton of time in the discord overnight after leaning there was a big to inform your viewers.
Alright, so that was the issue then. Nice to hear that it will be better than expected.
I really appreciate the content you produce. Would it be possible to add SSX3 for PS2/GC into your videos? That's the game I'd really like to play most on such a handheld.
Great videos , can you test Kingdom Hearts PS2 on your next hunts ?
Much appreciated
The Gpd XP Plus, which uses the same chipset, had the exact same issue.
If the Odin 2 releases when scheduled it will make more sense to get that with the sd gen 2.
Are you getting a gameforce ACE (Rk3588), either review unit or self purchase?
For PS2, games like dirge of cerberus, sly cooper 2 and 3, and I think jax 2 and 3 (if i remember correctly) might be better tests for these upcoming handheld like Odin 2 and Pocket S.
Valkyrie Profile 2 Silmeria is also quite intensive if you do not disable the bloom/lighting as well, at least with the current state of the emulators.
Looking forward to see the 8 gen 2 variant
Same here. Rooting for that one. Hope Russ will cover this one!
@@DesertFoxNLon nanoreviews the 8 gen 2 offers almost twice more performance than the D1200.
I'm expecting really good results on that pocket air variant. 🎉🎉🎉
Hi, friend. Do you think this console has better performance than the Odin Pro with Snapdragon 845? Which of these emulates Switch a little better?
Thank you for committing to accuracy and the Aya neo community!
Tony Hawks Underground in the New Jersey level, that is my benchmark on if GC is full speed.
Does this change the battery life significantly now that the cores are matching the correct mode? Is there more of a difference in battery life between the modes?
Check out the pinned comment, I did some testing this morning!
can these android devices boot straight into Daijisho for example? or do you have to click an icon to launch?
Nice. 😊
@RetroGameCorps After having reviewed this and the Odin 2...for the same price would you purchase this or the Odin 2? I know the Odin 2 outperforms the Pocket Air, but I'm asking if the Pocket Air's Oled screen is a way to justify it over the Odin 2? Or is the oled screen, not a game changer like it was on the Vita?
Will there be a patch that fixes this so we dont have to manually toggle on & off these settings everytime we turn on this device ?
Could you start adding The Urbz, The Sims: Bustin Out, and/or The Simpsons to your gamecube testing catalog? I really want a handheld console but Idk where to start. I just want to run gamecube games with no issue
Rich, Im having the same issues with my 2s as well. I noticed when playing starfield i would have to go into the software after every sleep cycle, toggle the wattage profile around, then it would play at the correct wattage output. Fyi this software issue may be across all aya devices running this version of the software.
CPU float! Yes! You should have turned on the GPU stats as well, I use this app all the time to tweak my cpu/gpu governors per system on android.
Unfortunately the GPU data was not available in CPU Float on this device, the chipset or firmware were not reporting this information.
Well....darn. Kind of wish I didn't cancel my order now....
UPDATE: Was about to hit the buy now button on the Odin2, which, IS going to be more powerful than this, that's just facts, but decided to check out the Pocket Air page one more time and there was actually an Early Bird unit available, so I ordered it again but this time saved $20!
You should do a full tour of all of your systems. I would really enjoy that, and I'm pretty sure a lot of other people would to.
Help please, i have a poco f4 and when i connect gamesir x2 on dolphin fps drops about 5-10. Any solution?
whats up with the snapdragon model you were talking about
This might also help in case anyone wants a PS2 emulator that's consistently updated: Nethersx2 is building upon what's been abandoned of Aethersx2, might help with those looking for more optimization.
NetherSX2 is great from a user standpoint in that it removes ads and allows for custom icon/naming, but it doesn't have any performance fix beyond what's available in AetherSX2. Sadly the source code was not shared when the developer abandoned the project, so true development is still locked.
what happens to the batery life when the cores are running at those new speeds?
Check out the pinned comment!
Still sounds like the Odin 2 will be cheaper and easier still
Odin 2 will be better because it has the better chip and that price to performance for Android is pretty good. But for people who like the air design or want a OLED screen, the pocket air will be it.
Yeah, you'll just need to map all your controls for every controller and when you dock
and how cheap and easy will that time machine be?
Surely it would be more fair to compare the Odin 2 to other 2025 technology?
@Wabajak13 that was literally one day ago. The preorders for Odin 2 ended yesterday and at the time still had early bird prices available.
This looks like much better performance, sad the d-pad is inaccurate.
do you have any information about the pocket s yet that you would be allowed to share? idk if they send review units out early or anything. just because i have been waiting for something actually pocket size that can handle gamecube and ps2 really well and waited to hear more about the pocket s instead of just getting an early bird deal on the pocket air because the air seems a little beyond what i would say is really a good pocket size for me. but seeing the performance and the trend for most of these seems to be to make them big so im wondering if this is the closest i would get and if i made a mistake waiting. also thank you for all the great videos you do a great job
Pocket S is a waaaays out. They only have concepts and models, no videos of it playing things- or even appearing in people’s hands
how well does it handle paper mario ttyd?
last video was weird, as TAKI had showcased good PS2 emulation months ago
so we have to do this every time we power it on??
can i install Skyline edge in this device
These manufacturers seem to do a good job on the hardware side, but when it comes to the software side, not so much. It's no wonder that so many people hesitate to try these emulation handhelds. People shouldn't have to spend hours troubleshooting this kind of nonsense. Thanks for the update, Russ. Few other reviewers would've followed up on this issue to the same level of effort and speed as you did.
Can you also test Cult of the Lamb on these devices :) please and thank you.
Finally got Dolphin running decently on my Switch OLED
So this is a fix that you apply yourself every time right? Not something that Ayaneo fixes themselves? If so I really hope they implement it in a future update as this would get quite annoying after a while.
Arthur and Aya are aware of this bug now so hopefully they'll fix it before this device starts shipping internationally
Is this bug also present in the Windows Ayaneo devices or is this just an Android Ayaneo issue?
Surely the battery life would take a hit with all cores now correctly clocked at max. Great video still, now we just need updated battery life results.
Check out the pinned comment, I did a battery test this morning.
@@RetroGameCorps bravo russ, youre videos and work are S teir in the retro handheld space.
are the games drag and drop now or are we messing with settings and forks to get these games to run proper
They are drag and drop now with a couple exceptions like changing out the graphics backend in some GC games.
Amazing to see portable GameCube and ps2 devices becoming more affordable
Funny how there’s two gens for handhelds. The new gen that sees these as budget, lower powered handhelds, and the old gen that sees this as the premium step ups we’ve been waiting for.
can it play stwars rogue leader game cube full speed
Ah, the classic turn it off and back on again still works in 2023, feels good man.
Hey mr Russ, can you test Ayaneo Pocket Air with daijisho home launcher and play basara via dolphin mmjr 2 how much battery will it drain cause my ayaneo pocket air only playable 5 - 6 hour low brightnetss and performance + slow fan mode
Is this like an update or is it now on all consoles ??
How's the battery life now after all cores are running full speed
Check out the pinned comment, I did some testing this morning!
Do you think the 6 gig version can run the ps2 emulator at the same performance ??
Yes 100%
Which launcher in that?
Did Aya not tease a SD8G2 for this handheld coming as well? I think ETA had a video on it
No. They are making a completely different model for the new chips. Just look it up. It is already out there. The pocket air will only have the dimensity 1200
I also did pick up the sd8g2 version for this one being teased. So let's see in the coming weeks.
👋 best channel for retro honestly 😊, i would like to ask about tomb raider 1 and 2 on the anbernic rg35xx ! When running the game everything is fine until i start a new game ! A black screen pops up and nothing happens (tried files .pbp and .bin) same issues! Any solution?
try chd format
Might be a foreign question, but does anyone have any idea how the ps2 versions of Madden would go on this product? I primarily enjoy the sports games.
Saw the full review about 2 hours ago and decided to get the Odin 2. Is there cause to think that it will still outperform the pocket air, or would this fix put it on par?
The SD 8Gen2 chip on the Odin 2 will still significantly outperform the Pocket Air, all of the cores are clocked a lot higher (3.2GHz for the main core), and it has an updated GPU, as well as emulation development optimizations.
The Odin 2 has a Snapdragon chipset which are actually weaker when it comes to raw power, but it's much better optimised so you do get better performance. With this fix however, I would guess it's almost on par. We won't know for sure until the Odin 2 is out but I think the performance difference will be negligible. Ergonomics and price as well as customer service is what makes a difference at this point.
@@RetroGameCorps Thanks for the quick response!
@@abdullahkuzhan7247all the published performance scores for the SD8 Gen2 in the Odin2 far outperform the d1200 in both GPU and CPU. Where are u getting the info that the d1200 has more raw power? Are u conflating the Odin 2 with the SD845 in the Odin Pro?
@@abdullahkuzhan7247lol so the options are to take your word or the guy who runs a serious review channel? Also, yeah, where are you getting your data from because it ain’t right.
I cancel my pre-order after watching that video you made yesterday! I already own the GPD plus there's no need for this device. PLUS THE ODIN 2 is on the way!
Are we talking full speed, or zero stutters? Two very different things when it comes to Gamecube
Still not really worth the money unless you really need a handheld for PS2/GC ASAP.
Better to wait for Odin 2 or pocket S instead if you are willing to spend around 300 USD or more.
Not sure if i missed you mentioning it, but is the same "bug" with the modes present on other handhelds like rp3+, odin lite/base/pro, logitech cloud etc?
Hi, no this bug is not present in most other devices, although the GPD XP+ also had issues getting into performance mode as well.
@@RetroGameCorps Those XP+ bugs have since been fixed?
How do you think this will compare to the upcoming AYN Odin 2?
Odin 2 will trounce in performance, but build quality and screen will be worse.
For demanding switch emulation and the problem games of ps2(like sly cooper) odin will breeze through where pocket air struggles. Speakers will also be better on odin.
@@colegillgrass3373 thank you for the insight, i was able to preorder the super early 12gb pro model on day 1, hope i get it in December
This or Odin 2?
Can you play harry potter ps2 games kn these
Just a suggestion; may you pin like a brief update about this in comments of pocket air review video?
