    I've wanted a pocketable PS2 for a long, long time and the clamshell design is my absolute favorite handheld design out there. After being wowed by my AYN Odin Pro in the PS2 arena, I had high hopes, but I don't think we're quite there yet. Really hoping for more clamshell designs on the future.

      We're YEARS away from good PS2/GameCube performance on a handheld. And by this I mean being able to play all games for both at at least a 2x resolution. Even something like a SnapDragon 888 phone still can't reach perfect performance for either of those, so we'll be waiting a while. I've felt the same way about GameCube for ages, portable GC is my dream handheld

      @@3godzilla3 I think the problem with SD888 and later phones performance is that it's firstly a phone. Processing power wasted maintaining necessary phone functions and not just games and emulators.
      If you put something like SD 8 Gen 1 or A15 bionic from apple in a dedicated handheld it's gonna perform well enough.

    • @MarkTheMagnificent

      @@3godzilla3 oh for sure. If I had seen emulation similar to the Odin Pro, I'd have been satisfied. In no way am I expecting a full library running perfectly for PS2 lol. That's a long way off, I know.

    Thanks for this Russ. Your retro handheld reviews are absolutely the best available. So much depth but very much to the point without dragging. That's no mean feat given how short our attention spans tend to be these days.
    Your contribution to this hobby is absolutely invaluable to so many of us. Thank you.
    One aspect that doesn't tend to get covered consistently but always interests me with these portable devices is outdoor visibility. Maybe I'm the only one who cares about that. 😂

    You can program the M1 and M2 buttons to any button including home/back/mode but it has to be done using the Retroid Screen mapping / key adapter software. Figured I would share how to program the M1 and M2 buttons outside of using retroarch or a specific emulator. I couldn't find anything on this besides a helpful comment from a fellow redditor. This is because Game streaming and general use only shows the M1 and M2 buttons as A. The M1 and M2 buttons are not configurable in the system settings. Currently, they are only configurable on a per application basis. Meaning you have to re-do the screen mapping for every application you want to use them with.
    1: Once in the application, drag your finger from the right side of the screen to open the Retroid menu.
    2: Make sure that "screen mapping" is enabled and then press "Key Adapter" on the top left of the menu. A new window should pop up for screen mapping.
    3: Drag and drop the button on the bottom left of the pop-up window to a location on the screen. Then press which M button that you want to program. The button should go from a circle and now list what button you pressed.
    4: Touch your finger to the button on the screen to open the settings for the button. Select "button mode" on the bottom left side of the screen. Change "Convert key value" to be whatever button you want the M button to be (you have to slide the listed buttons to the left and it will show more buttons to change it too). "Mode" will be the Steam or Xbox button for Game streaming. Save when done.
    5: Select the gear Icon on the screen mapping screen. Under "Scheme transparency" you can move the slider all the way to zero and it will make the button you dragged onto the screen invisible, unless you open the screen mapping/key adapter settings.
    6: Press the blue button (with a folder and check mark) in the screen mapping menu to save your settings.
    This has to be done for every application and is not changeable from the system settings. Took me a while to figure out. Hope this helps out others! Cheers!

    Love the notion of gifting these kinds of devices to others. I’m more than set on my own handhelds-hacked Switch, hacked PS Vita, and Steam Deck-but custom tailoring one of these for a loved one is right up my alley in terms of my best brand thoughtfulness and fun. Loved seeing how you set up your wife’s machine and how thoughtful you were on her use case versus your own. Great stuff, as always!

      @@user-qo6qs9hu6d in my experience, it is. That said, what do I do with a hacked Switch that I can’t do on my regular one? I’m not interested in piracy, which takes one of the biggest allures off the table. For me, it’s all about emulation and tinkering. I can add (extremely limited) mods to Witcher 3. I have a minimal UI for the home screen and lock screen. I overclock (within reason) for certain games and N64 emulation. And speaking of emulation, it allows me to rip my legally acquired Switch games for play on my Steam Deck. So, in many ways, it’s a useless novelty, especially with my other handhelds. But if you like tinkering and don’t have another emulation handheld, it can be pretty neat-o. However, if you’re not into tinkering and you have other devices, don’t feel like you’re missing out on much, because you’re not. Hacking the Switch doesn’t magically make it a completely new device in my humble opinion. It just adds options to the toy box, as it were. Does that make any sense or help at all?

      @@user-qo6qs9hu6d yes and no, I have a modded and unmodded switch, the modded switch is great for emulation and game mods (pokemon randomizers etc.), you can apply custom themes. If you plan on playing any online I'd stick to not hacking the switch. But if you want to tinker around run homebrew and mods it's well worth it.

      @@BrianJones-wk8cx I've got a patched switch and a hacked 2ds xl, would you say getting a steam deck would be good value? I already have a desktop pc too so I don't know if I'd use it enough to be worth it. What do you mostly use your deck for?

    • @BrianJones-wk8cx
      @BrianJones-wk8cx Год назад +4

      @@ukimenustah7932 well, let me say this-your mileage may vary, so I’ll tell you why I enjoy having my Steam Deck, see if you can relate or if that helps. I have my three handhelds as mentioned in my initial post as well as a fairly recent desktop gaming rig (12700K and 3080 FTW), mind you. But for me, honestly, the Steam Deck is the machine I almost always reach for first. With a 1TB SD card, I have the complete libraries of ROMS for systems from NES to N64, full Dreamcast ROM set, full MAME ROM set, a smattering of DOS games, PS1, PS2, and PS 3 games, some Wii U games, the Golden Eye unreleased remake for XBox 360, and my Switch collection. I cycle in favorites from my Steam and GOG libraries as well. That’s all in the one handheld device. I ponied up for the 512 GB version, so that’s 1.5 TB total storage, and I’ve never looked back. Not a single moment of buyer’s remorse. It’s the most comfortable device to hold and play on for extended periods that I’ve ever owned, and often I’m just plugged in on the couch. Now if all you do is play Nintendo Switch and 2DS/3DS games, maybe emulate lower end systems on both platforms, only want to play your PC games on a 4K big screen, the Deck may be a waste of time for you. But if you get excited about PC gaming anywhere, having full ROM sets for just about any retro system (PS3 and Xbox 360 are the only sketchy sketchy ones in the bunch, everything else is as perfect as on my desktop rig), and like the tinkering from time-to-time, the Deck is worthwhile. I love my Switch, don’t get me wrong, but going from something like Witcher 3 on Switch-even with ReverseNX set to docked mode for better resolution and using hacks to get better visual settings-to the Deck is night and day. Seriously. I prefer the Deck to my Switch on every game I own, bar none. I almost prefer the Deck to my desktop rig due to the creature comforts of Steam Input (easy remapping controls for every game) and the trackpads. Make no mistake, I still fire up the Switch for grins and giggles, and my desktop rig hooked up to my 4K TV is tremendous. The Vita has admittedly been collecting dust. But there’s something about the Deck that keeps me coming back. And with little nips and tucks, tools and tricks (see Cryobyte33’s channel for inspiration on what possibilities you might see in the device), it somehow still seems to have room to grow. Hell, that’s me running my mouth-did I say anything that’s helpful? Don’t be shy if you have any other questions. I feel like this is why the internet exists-if I can lend you my perspective in a useful way, then we’re doing it right. Let me know!

    Seriously, the retroid pocket flip did not disappoint. My wife has been wanting her own handheld emulation device since I got my steam deck, and she noticed it can emulate GameCube. She didn't want me to buy her a steam deck because it's too big clunky, and she didn't want to pay over $600 for a handheld custom GameCube. So I've been searching for a device that can emulates GameCube and Nintendo 64 since last year I considered the pocket 3+ but also remembered that she just throws everything in her bag and leaves so I was going to need something in clambshell form factor. Finally the pocket flip was announced 🙌 its perfect for a normie like her and so far every game she's wanted on it runs at or near full speed.

    I'm really hoping there's a flip 2 with enough power for gamecube and ps2. The reason clamshell and vertical handhelds seem so popular is neck comfort. When you hold the screen above the controls you can tilt your head less down and not need to hold the handheld as high. Both of which are more comfortable then horizontal handhelds which you need to either hold higher or tilt your head down more.

    It looks like a pretty damn good device - If I wanted to buy my first emulation handheld this would probably be the one I'd go for. Since I already own the 2+ it doesn't really make sense for me to go for this one, it isn't that much of an upgrade in terms of power. My next device upgrade needs flawless PS2 and GC ... and hopefully 3DS as well.

      yeah waiting for the 4 or 4+ seems too be good looking at the spreadsheet most gc games run ok (all the games i like on the gc run well) can't say the same for wii or even the 3ds while the 3ds can run mario maker and more there not alot wii even smaller. So wait for the 4+ i would say so gamecube can be 90% playable.

    I thought this device would be worse than it actually is. That’s nice. I do prefer a greater performance and bigger screen over the novelty of the flip device. That pushed me to getting an Odin Lite earlier in the week. It’s like $30 more expensive, but I’m willing to make that trade for a better performance and screen.

    • @skycloud4802

      I agree with you on that. Only instead I got a Steam Deck. It's not pocketable unfortunately, but it'll do the performance for me until pocketable devices catch up in the performance. For 32 bit and lower, the smaller handhelds are more than ideal.

      @@skycloud4802 Agreed with you on the steam deck. I love it but it's not very pocket friendly, if the ROG handheld, GPD Win devices and the like all come down in price there will be more steam deck like devices entering the market. I really wish GPD were priced around the steam deck price even Indiegogo early bird special still has several hundred dollars more expensive than the most expensive Steam Deck 🥲

    • @ShadyRapture
      @ShadyRapture Год назад +7

      @@piplup10203854they will never be priced like the steam deck. These companies make their money on the hardware and then their profit is done. That’s it. Steam sells the deck at a loss because they make a profit on all steam game sales, so they make it back after you purchase a couple of games and then start profiting later on your game purchases. It’s an investment in their software for the company essentially.

      The problem I have with the Odin is the same problem I have with the Steamdeck, Switch, and basically 90% of the more powerful devices in this sphere of tech: it's not actually portable to me. For me, If I can't put it in my pocket and forget about it without having to worry about the screen or controls, it's not really portable. That's the main reason that even after buying a Switch and gaming laptop I still prefer to take my CFW N3DSXL everywhere. So for me, this is like my dream android handheld.
      Hesitant to buy it just given Retroid's reputation for releasing revisions VERY early, but overall this is the handheld I'm shooting for.

      @warbossgegguz679 Год назад +4

      @@piplup10203854 Not every company can have the level of capital that Valve has. Most major console manufactures sell the hardware at a loss (at the very least early on) and make up for it with software licensing sales. Which is exactly what Valve does since you need to, ya know, buy games through steam for the steam deck (or at least that's what more casual consumers will do).
      That said, the steamdeck doesn't have _that_ amazing of specs. It's just that it's got good specs _compared to the Switch._ There are handheld PCs like the AYANEO 2 that completely blow the steamdeck out of the water in terms of hardware. Like, the specs are better than most tower Gaming PCs. They're just also priced like High-end portable gaming PCs (which they are) rather than like a Switch/Steamdeck (ie $1099-$1500)
      As usual, it's a meme-worthy case of PC gamers flexing that their nearly $2000 PC is better than a $300 console. And I say that as a PC gamer.

    Hi Russ, great video, as always! I've watched a lot of your first impressions and review videos of devices such as miyoo mini+, rg35xx, rg353p, rg353m, rg405m, rp3+ and this retroid pocket flip.
    I bought the rg405m thinking it would be the ideal handheld for me, but the L1 was the Achilles heel on the rg405m for me. The L1 has given out on my rg405m, and i then found out many posts on reddit that many people face the shoulder trigger buttons issues with rg405m's inline buttons, that it is tactile, unlike the previous inline shoulder trigger buttons on the rg353m, which were much better.
    I am thinking of replacing my rg405m with a retroid. I think the rp3+ is too long and not pocketable for me. But this dimensions of the retroid pocket flip seem to be "acceptable for my pockets".
    But given my disappointing experience with the rg405m, and seeing some reddit posts about the hinge cracking, and M2 buttons not working after a while, and R2 having problems with the springs, I am kinda scared to make the purchase.
    May I know what is your current feedback and feelings on the retroid pocket flip, now that you have had it for a longer time, and do you experience any of these issues or problems with the cracked hinge, non-functional M2, not working R2?

    As someone who's not personally familiar with Retroid procucts, in a lot of ways this feels like them just testing the market for a clamshell device - basing so much of the design and specs on their already-existing high-end product to minimize their financial risk. I would expect that there won't be a 'Flip+' like a lot of folks expect, but instead there'll be a 'Flip 2' that will be on par with whatever specs the Pocket 4 ends up with, but in an improved shell. For me, this Flip looks excellent as-is and will suit my needs just fine for a good long time.
