Who Has Time for Doomsday? Not Alaska

- On July 4, 2017, North Korea launched an intercontinental ballistic missile that had serious ramifications for the United States. The ICBM traveled more than 1,700 vertical miles before ultimately landing in the Sea of Japan. Some experts warned that if the missile had been sent on a flatter trajectory, it could have made contact with Alaska. The Communist regime was finally capable of nuclear destruction stateside.
The missile test seemed to be on every front page in mainland America that day. But when the filmmaker David Freid Googled the news from Alaska, almost no headlines surfaced. “I saw barely a mention in the local reporting of what was a big deal to the Lower 48,” Freid told me. He saw articles about an increase in bear attacks in Anchorage. He saw news that the salmon run wasn’t as strong as in years past. He read an article about rising sea levels in the North, which were forcing an Inuit town to relocate. “These are important things,” Freid said. “But when it came to Kim [Jong Un]’s nukes, there was a surprising lack of local coverage.” Read more: www.theatlantic.com/video/ind...

*A N Korean attack, would send Alaska into a Nuclear Winter!*
And by "Nuclear Winter", I mean: "Milder, than an Alaskan Winter."
Funny !
Alaska Dundee
That's what I hear about:
"The Land Up Over."
TheCrazyKid1381
Yeah, the Inuit still live in igloos, and never used fire for warmth.
I'm not from the South. ..btw
TheCrazyKid1381
Fair skinned people evolved in colder climates. But, who would be acclimated now? Everyone's used to living indoors. You're a troll, or a dip-shit. Hard to tell nowadays
TheCrazyKid1381 .....have u heard of these countries, they’re pretty small, they’re called Russia and Canada don’t know if u know about them
@4:30 the guy says, "We'll get out the bear guns and let's dance." That's gotta be the most American thing I've ever heard.
If America was ever invaded & our Military Defeated, the enemy wouldn't be able to keep their Officers alive for more than a few days, due to our Veterans, Hunters, Police Officers, etc...
@Julian Gomez I don't think it's so far off. You could wipe everyone out by nuke but an actual WW2 style on-the-ground invasion of a country with more guns than people, many of whom actually can shoot? Think guerilla warfare. Not even the US could actually win in Vietnam. That in a way bigger country, with more people, more guns and a will to fight in pretty much everyone that is pro gun? No way
@@sphericalsphere the only reason we didn't win the Vietnam war was because of marijuana. Our soldiers smoked a ton and didn't want to fight because they thought they had no reason to. They realized that war was a load of horse shit.
Julian Gomez lol you’re a moron with no knowledge of asymmetrical warfare
That's how red states roll.
I’m a resident of Alaska. You portrayed our laid back and carefree attitude very well. Well written and beautifully edited pieces. Loved it!
That Old School Boarder guy said it best.
Kristian Kho we one big family
Kristian Kho right I want to smoke a bowl and have a beer with him
@First Name Last Name if I ever go to the States, I'd wanna go to Alaska just for the chance to have a beer with him
this was pretty dang fun to watch. And Alaskans are chill AF!
Literally and figuratively
Yeah just don't give them hard liquor
*those Alaskans, no people are a monolith.
As an Alaskan, can confirm.
Shauday Smith considering a shitload of us joked about the Earthquake, yeah.
This video is clever and hilarious
“Now if they try to invade, come get some baby. We’ll get out the bear guns and dance.” I can not😂😂😂😂
Everybody can dance
And if your friends don't dance and if they don't dance well there, no friends of mine
5:18 i love this guy
interviewer: Do you watch the news?
Old School Boarder:NO!!HECK NO!!!
The old school boarder is the type of guy I want to share a bowl and a drink with.
holy freakin cow
Lil Yo 😂
Watch your profanity.
There were bull moose too!
Why is Mount Rainier in here at 0:56, lol??
Mt Rainier is located in WASHINGTON, not Alaska. That is the eastern face of Rainier, and it isn't flanked by water like that. I get that they just googled "snowy volcano" or something, but it still irks me.
Conc.: 8:25 - I'm amazed at the film technology of nuclear tests. They capture the devastation and shock waves that fry and shake forests, and burn the paint off and fling school buses using cameras that have frail, fragile little gears and film stock that can't even get stuck in a projector, or the light bulb melts it. The cameras remain so perfectly steady throughout it all, too. Doing so much with so little, it's impressive.
Perhaps the most intelligent people in the USA.
Do you watch the news?
HECK NO!!!
Spent time "up there" back in the 90's
Washington ain't too far away
@First Name Last Name wait didint you guys get brainwashed by operation mockingbird?
You gotta strike a balance between knowing what's going on in the world and not stressing over things you can't fix. I grew up during the cold war and was freaked out over that TV mini-series "the day after", but you really couldn't do much about it.
It took me a couple of second to recognize the title acronym - and then i practically fell out of my chair with too-loud laughter. Thank you The Atlantic - yet another videographic gem! 👏👍
haha this is a very well put-together video. I'll have to say I was annoyed by how long it took to start, but really a great video
I have just one word for this video: beautiful.
Great video. Witty, great production, just very well done.
why the heck would n. korea aim there missiles to Alaska !? might aswell aim it to antartica or the center of the pacific ocean.
The info in this video is outdated at this point, but at the time of the missile test Alaska was their closest (and only viable) US target (except maybe Hawaii?). Their missiles didn't have the long-range capabilities they now have, so Alaska was really their only option. IIRC they now have missiles that could hit pretty much anywhere in the US, but it's kinda irrelevant since it's very unlikely they would actually launch a nuke at the US (as the video said, they'd be completely annihilated shortly after the launch, and their assumed objective of destroying the US would be less than 1/50th complete).
Fun fact - technically, the US is not and never was at war with North Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, or Iraq. Congress never declared war on those countries, so we weren't actually involved in a (constitutionally defined) war. Last "real" US war as declared by congress was WWII.
@@scared4704 thats interesting because its seems like there was a mentality that ALL the us would be destroyed if the war would start, When only alaska was at risk.
Way to throw Alaska under the bus... thought we were all Americans in this together, Anchorage and Angeles are the same soil... @@david35711
@@zackatwood2867 😂sorry alaska but we all gotta make sacrifices...
Alaska has some of the largest oil reserves in the country still. Not to mention it's other significant natural resources.
Also it's the closest. It's about projecting power, if you can hit the continental US, what else could they hit? Seattle? California? Somewhere in Europe?
They showed a bunch of tourists, a fishing guide, a hippie, and tons of random shots of the wilderness 😒
As an Alaskan it gets tedious having to tell every person I meet that Anchorage is a very big city with a joint Army & Air Force base (JBER). Sure it's surrounded by massive mountains and wilderness, but think of the things your city has and Anchorage has it as well.
Hurr durr "big city", so like 50,000 people?
No. 300,000 which doesn't even include the joint base.
Our Main airport is the *4th largest cargo airport in the world.* (anchorage has 3 airports btw)
Like I said, tired of explaining this.
If I was you, id be very proud of the wilderness you have. Walking a mile without seeing a human built structure is impossible over here in Europe. And yes, i know you've got big cities, but thats really not what alaska is known for in the world :D
@@zitro37 right, but if you're making a video talking about Anchorage and don't show a single shot of downtown its really disingenuous.
Well. I mean, a lot of other Alaskans love the wilderness. At least from my experience in living in Anchorage
alaska has beautiful salmon
Not for long, cause the conservatives wanna mine the shit out of the very bay the salmon rely on for spawning...
Its seems so nice to fish over there.... I live in Germany and if I want to go fishing, I need to travel 10 Kilometers to get to a lake filled with waste and only minnows in it... I want to go to Canada or Alaska sometime :D
@@zitro37 They will not be around much longer. Like @72marshflower15 is saying the pebel mine will eventually destroy the eco system, then it will destroy the economy. Don't put yourself in a bad financial situation just to rush over here though. There will still be halibut
@@thesmellofbacon7595 Oh well we got Halibuts in Norway too tho. But Im in School anyways. Even without the salmons id go to alaska or canada just to catch some nice walleyes or pike. Not saying that this mine is a good thing tho. This would be a problem for us too, since we get alot of salmon from over the ice :)
@@72marshflower15 That area has 300 billion dollars worth of metals.
I live in rural Alaska and this is something me and my family think about regularly and I don't think we are the only ones.
Yes you are.
Yukon keep your Alaska, I'm having Nunavut! 🇨🇦
realistly if you nuke alaska with how big it is and the population count thats extremly excessive
you spent a whole nuke which took years to research and tons of money, started a war with several large nations to kill like, 20 guys who were just out there hunting and fishing
Not Dopler Unless they target Anchorage.
This is so heartwarming man California is just a bunch of bs politics and everyone’s so worried about what others are doing. :\ ima move to Alaska
lol I'm, Californian and I couldn't agree more! Here I'm taxed to breathe; there I'm paid to.
Small town bar in Alaska would not be watching cnn
Down here in Sitka. Good piece. Nobody is concerned.
Not much concern in Kodiak, either
This is one of the better videos I've watched in a while. Well done
This video needs a lot of views. Sharing now.
That wolf is cgi... you couldn't find a real wolf running down the road looking at a space ship? Come on now!
This is a beautifully made video. Thank you
As an alaskan I can confirm that we care more about the news regarding our immediate environment than whatever political game that people every where else wanna play. Stuff like that just is.... Nah. Not important.
Love the Fallout "Please Stand By" screen as the bombs go off at 8:39.
Great edit
We can/are come together as a species against global problems such as climate change.
Not the chinese. They eat everything..
Beautiful photography
All I got from this is that we should attach bears to rockets and launch them at North Korea.
Alaskans are just Canadians who rock the stars and stripes
Alaska is my most visited place! So pretty and FREKIN KOLD in the winter
0:42 "Strange Love" in Korean spotted! With little rocket man signature :D
A beautifully made little film!
nice piece good pace
Amazing, like actually, beautiful work of art!
overall this was a great video. I thought it was very well put together.
If anyone was wondering, the intro to this video is incorrect captions,. This clip is from an announcement that North Koreans saw on TV about the Trump-Un Summit.
I swear the music at the end was "All my hope is in Jesus"
Which is actually pretty fitting for the video.
No matter what you believe, we are just trying to get through one day at a time-
And most of us, religious or not, put faith in something we don't see or understand.
I don't think there are many of us who wake up fearing armageddon every day,
I guess we all just have hope in tomorrow.
Realest shit I've ever read
this was very pleasant and stylized
At this point we are up here waiting for the sweet release
8:35 I like the fallout loading screen in the back right top corner
"Do you watch the news?" "No! Heck no"!
What is the song at 2:12 called?
Best video of the week award!
epic cinematography
I’d be more worried about those damn bears getting into my pic-a-nic basket 🧺
lololol did anyone notice the "little rocket man" graffiti on the missile at 0:47 seconds? That's funny!
What song is at the beginning?
Who produced this video. I’m amazed . Who made this!? Thank you lol
whats the song at the start?
every source I can find says the missile only made it ~620 miles. not 1700.
Song at the end?
6:19 that nuclear cannon was American. Not North Korean or Soviet.Unless you wanted to show American fury.
Name of the ending song?
Rocket man's got nothing on us. Alaska for life
We need more of those in our adds
this is surprisingly adorable and sweet video
the mountains at 8:09 look like something out of fiction
This is the place to be when it all goes down. It'll get rough but Alaskans will survive.
Whole thing gave me far cry 5 vibes
Jason lesmeister is a boss. Made me laugh 😆
What’s the intro music name?
Spark - Single Girl, Married Girl
Used to live in Alaska... cant wait to go back
Intro Song????
if all americans gets this same attitude, the world would've been a much peaceful place
Euro trash
The_Ninja_HD mate. You’re legit trying to prove his point lmao
Alaskans ability to tune out the outside world almost seems decadent given the state of the world right now.
Why do you think we live here? Well that and global warming...
I was stationed in Alaska back in the day. A key region that separates several powers: Korea, Russia, China, USA, and even the Nordic powers.
Tommy Beauchene Nordic as in Scandinavia? Why are they being lumped into that group? Jw
0:48 "Little Rocket Man" he nice Easter egg
In hope they do something for April
Gods I love my home. I can't wait to return.
Alaskan people are the kindest people in the states. Hard mfs. And crazy as Florida man. Honesty the best state
"maybe Martians have to come up so we have something to get together for" - soon to be world president
What's Alaska??
I want to move to Alaska and live off the land like Heimo Korth.
Living off the land like Heimo is impossible in that he lives under an exemption but even in another place subsistence is extremely inefficient. It takes hundreds of acres of land for one person to subsist and less than a quarter of an acre for a family to live under intense cultivation (seriously look up some of the quarter acre farms videos on here). Many young people come up here hoping to do what Heimo or Dick Proenneke did and learn that it is far better to make your way in small town/village Alaska instead. For the record Heimo doesn't see the sun for months at a time in winter, but Alaska is a really big place. Just stay away from Anchorage! It is the nasty doughnut hole that Texas put up here when it got jealous of our size!
This video was just beautyfull
I’d personally just move to Alaska to be honest
Same but the winters with little to no sunlight would kill me.
Dude Alaskans are cool. I'd move there if I wasn't already sick of snow being from Minnesota
Tyler There’s barely snow nowadays
"HOLYYYY FREAKING COW" - said by a cow
I really need to move up to Alaska
My home😊! 907 FTW
I don’t want to be in a nuclear war, because i don’t want the whole human population to be wiped out...
The just feels like a concerted effort to show how much they don't WANT to care.
But underneath all the facade, of course they care.
No we don't. Alaska is big and many of us wouldn't mind losing Anchorage...
Well, I don't think anyone was or is worried about North Korea.
an i am really sincere about that,,,good shit for a sunday morning youtuber :))))
I live in Ketchikan, Alaska, and have been to Seward, Anchorage, and Juneau. The people and attitude are as accurately presented as it can get, stop short of coming to visit us for yourselves.
Bear encounters, salmon/crab counts, natural disasters, climate change (cities that normally get annual rainfall in the 10s of feet are now in a state of drought), and a questionable governor (with an even more questionable administration and budget) are actual problems that need solving.
Ain't nobody got time for faraway "threats".
"State of drought" because you tied into our hydro grid and ran it all down, not because we didn't have enough water. SEAPA should have never let you guys in! The wet bits are all still very wet, just the reservoirs you lot drew down never refilled like you hoped they would! And the new Governor is actually willing to cut spending as needed, and you call that a problem because you are surrounded by whiners who don't want to pay for the services they use and aren't willing to be taxed...
Don't let Felix fool you step outside, offline and all the pretend problems go right away and we have more outside than just about anybody else...
At 1:34 the mirror doesn't match the tv lol
Alaskans are my kind of people
Into Song: Single Girl and Married Girl Spark
holy friggin cow
Why would you shoot a nuke towards a state that has the lowest population per square mile. Seems like a great way to inflict the least amount of damage
8:45 that takes balls
10 min to answer the question, nobody asks.
