  • When Doug Peacock returned from his second tour in Vietnam, he was ready for some peace and quiet. He found refuge in the wilds of Montana and Wyoming, among the many creatures that have inhabited the mountains and the plains for thousands of years. “My companions ended up being grizzlies,” Peacock says. “Those bears saved my life.” Read more: www.theatlanti...

Yeah- I remember the gentle, young, blonde man who lived among Grizzlies in Alaska. He felt safe enough among the bears to bring his young bride with him for the season. That Summer they were both killed and eaten by the Grizzlies. I agree, the wilderness must be preserved-its the original place where Human Beings might experience and gain knowledge of God the Creator. But we can do it as well, in a KOA campground with our dog. Keep Bear habitat exclusively for the bears. Help to preserve it, then take your doggie for a overnighter, outside of town. Because all it takes is for one hostile, grumpy bear to do differently, one day, and you're lunch.

Semper Fi. We are always in debt to you for the pain and suffering you endured during your tours in Vietnam. God bless you forever for that. Then thank you again for your dedication towards the preservation of the gift God gave us-I don't know why we can't realize how we have been systematically and ferociously eating at and irrevocably diminishing that Garden out of Eden like locusts...replacing meadows with malls and rolling hills with housing developments.
May you continue your love and your mission for as long as your heart wishes.

Mr Peacock, you are truly an American who did what he had to in the face of the ugly terror of war. And yet you managed to come home with so much positivity to put into something that really needs it. Your not seeking fame or fortune on a story from the past. You are forging a legend for generations that cannot ensure then own future. I have a special connection to the Grizzly, its very personal and if we ever crossed paths I will confide in you. May our hands shake somewhere in time.

But you people on the left never fail to show your insanity as soon as you can find a chance to. I realized long ago that dems and repubs are different wings on the same bird. Stop plaing into the hands of the social engineers. Divide and conquer is thier strategy, and you are helping them succeed by plaing your part in dividing people further. Wake up.

This man said many good things which I agree with. Not all Humans are arrogant fools. You can't lump us all together like that with one stroke of the brush. This man is proof. Not all grizzlies are kind creatures. This man never said any of the character flaws of the Grizzly just of mankind as though man is not allowed to enter into the wilderness. Mankind is just as much a part of the land as animals. Putting mankind down isn't going to solve the problem. Some animals can be very selfish and if they don't get there way they will kill eachother and other animals to get it, if they can just like some people. This is the truth. I'm just saying man and animal can coexist without painting eachother as fools and insensitive for thinking different. Some animal rights people are too sensitive while other people aren't sensitive enough about the animals and the wilderness. I have always been a wilderness, animal and people lover all my life.

"Arm yourself with friendship and love the earth."
I found this somewhere. I've forgotten where. But I'm reminded of it:
"... John Fire Lame Deers (Lakota Holy Man) explanation of the Wichasha Wakan (Holy Man), "The Wichasha Wakan wants to be by himself. He wants to be away from the crowd, from everyday matters. He likes to meditate, leaning against a tree or a rock, feeling the earth move beneath him, feeling the weight of that big flaming sky upon him. That way he can figure things out. Closing his eyes, he sees many things clearly. What you see with your eyes shut is what counts. The Wichasha Wakan loves the silence, wrapping it around himself like a blanket - a loud silence with a voice like thunder which tells him many things. Such a man likes to be in a place where there is no sound but humming of insects. He sits facing the west, asking for help. He talks to the plants and they answer him. He listens to the voices of the wamakaskan, all those who move upon the earth, the animals. He is one with them. From all living being something flows into him all the time, and some thing flows from him." - Lame Deer, Seeker of Visions, John Fire Lame Deer and Richard Erdoes.
