All I can think about when I see this is how local neighborhoods with rich culture and history get gentrified into high priced oblivion. Diluting the culture of New Orleans and pushing black people out.Beautiful home but it makes me sad to see.
It is incredibly heartbreaking that Black and Brown communities are being dismantled by gentrification across the nation.
Mannnn, and everyone acting like nothing is going on
On the one hand, I agree because I’ve seen rich people push poor people out of inner city neighborhoods in decades past. On the other hand, this is 2020. There are a great many poor white people now, too., more so than ever before. And that is increasing as the uber wealthy drain the value of the GDP, support low wages of workers of all races, minimize unions, and reduce the middle class. These people do not appear at all rich. One can no longer assume that just because someone is white that the person is better off financially than other races, or that they don’t deserve to be part of the community of others who are also not financially privileged.
@@Jessica-kk1cz You missed the whole point of my comment. Gentrification is the process of hipster white people buying property in underdeveloped historically black and brown neighbors for very low, under the guise of loving the rich history only to raise property values and push black and brown people out of the neighborhoods because now they can't afford to stay there. This kind of supersedes the question of super rich vs poor, this is more about having the agency to buy property, which you don't have to be super rich to do.
@@daralewis1306 I didn’t miss the point, I think it’s neither correct or morally right in many cases these days. What you’re saying is the flip side of the same coin of saying if traditionally more well off areas have folks who are black or brown who move in, that it reduces the property values in the area so that white people leave. That’s wrong. Likewise, the value of the property doesn’t increase just because some of the people are white, if they don’t have a lot of money either. That’s not correct or right either - and there are a great many white people who don’t have money now too.
Now, as an example of that “gentrification” that is essentially theft would be when Fannie Mae funded developers to go into SW Washington DC in 2006-7, to knock down the structures, that were falling down but largely poor black and brown people were still living in, and then the developers built new townhomes that they sold for $700,000. I personally spoke out against that then. Certainly the people who had been living there before could not afford those prices. But then poor white people could never afford purchase there either. That’s theft. It’s wealthy taking from poor. I agree with that.
It is a question of money and earning potential now. Not race.
Why are many white people struggling financially now? When one looks at the overall economic system, a lot of people, including whites, have been becoming poorer and poorer so over the past 20 years because of decreasing earning potential. This especially true of the young adults, because studies have shown pay in more junior level jobs, and jobs that don’t require a college degree, has stagnated while inflation has naturally increased as it always does. Therefore they’re effectively making a lot less. Studies show young adults, including the young white adults, make only a fraction of what their parents ever made when they were junior employees decades ago, without the benefit of having had prior lifetime earnings. Even people who are older and in jobs that don’t require degrees also have had stagnated wages too. The reason why is the number of jobs has decreased, and the jobs that are available don’t pay as well. For ex.,
- Manufacturing jobs, which previously benefitted from union activity and job stability people could rely on, largely disappeared because of automation of those jobs with machinery over the past two decades. (Some studies indicate 80% of manufacturing jobs have been automated in some industries).
- Retail jobs, which used to pay a living wage (and I’m old enough to remember those years because I had family who supported themselves in department store jobs), have largely disappeared. This is because people purchase less consumer goods overall today. When people do purchase, they very often purchase through online shopping vs. brick and mortar stores. (And even the retail distribution warehouses, like Amazon, are largely automated with machinery now too, instead of having more employees)
- Coal jobs have largely disappeared, because there are cheaper and more efficient forms of energy, like nuclear energy. (And many of those coal mining companies even defaulted on the pensions they were supposed to pay).
- Many farms were taken over by banks starting in the 1980s, who then sold them to large investors. Now food production is largely done by wealthy ‘factory farms”. Large food producers, like Tyson, that also now use more machinery than ever vs. employees.
Those are just a few examples. The middle class is smaller now than it has been since before the end of WWII.
Without getting too political, but my personal hypothesis is this economic stagnation is why the phony “Make America Great Again” edict held any power to begin with 4 years ago, among some people in this country. A lot of people whose grandparents and parents could make a decent living cannot do so themselves. A lot of them don’t understand what changed. Therefore, they are more likely to believe some of this “MAGA” messaging instead of realizing what is actually happening. For ex., they’re less likely to realize some of these jobs went away because of manufacturing automation, different energy technologies, etc. They’re instead more likely to believe the MAGA blame game that they’re lower earning potential is due to other poor people taking the jobs (South and Central Americans coming over the border), or that it’s a trade problem our job outsourcing problem to other countries (ex to China - though there is some truth to China’s trade aggressiveness), or governmental regulations (ex, for coal and gas), etc. The declining middle class are called a derogatory name, “elites, who can’t be trusted”. Secondly, and as I mentioned earlier, the uber wealthy have been sucking money out of the economy and hoarding it, instead of paying decent wages. The owners of Walmart are among the wealthiest in the world, but many Walmart employees are on government funded food stamps and other resources. CEOs and other company executives now make between 100-1000 times the salaries of their employees. These CEOs don’t purchase as many regular consumer goods as employees that drive the economy. What’s more, the uber wealthy pay less in taxes than at any time in history. When the everyday employees have less money to spend in the economy, there is less money going towards goods and services they would have purchased, which would have created other businesses that would have provided those goods and services.
So, now a lot of white people are in the same socioeconomic boat where more minorities were historically. Some come from rural areas, and some smaller and older cities where there are no jobs (like where both sets of my grandparents lived, that are now economically depressed areas). People do what people have always done throughout all of history when they don’t have jobs or ways to make money in areas they come from - they move to the cities. And these poorer people are definitely not moving to the expensive areas of cities. They’re going to move to the areas they can afford. And if they enjoy the move, and they enjoy new communities, why begrudge them? They’re not there to “take” anything from people there. Even if they were bad people who wanted to take over in these areas, they even couldn’t afford it any more than the people already there.
This is a young couple wants to be a part of the community. They shouldn’t be discriminated against just because they’re white, any more than a white community should discriminate against a black or brown neighbor. They probably share more commonalities with the people there due to socio-economic condition. Give them a chance and get to know them and let them get to know the community as it is. Cities are likely to continue to become more diverse anyway, especially in the less affluent areas, unless the larger national economic issues are evolved. And if that happens, there’s likely to be as many black and brown folks moving to the more affluent areas as well.
Gentrification, very sad to see local people priced out of the local market.

It’s really ridiculous that no one wants to talk about how rampant gentrification is. Especially in a place like New Orleans, where homes were (and are still) stolen from displaced people after Katrina. Barely legal. That’s why the market is so “attractive”. Bc of theft.

Speaking as a white person, I go to New Orleans for the culture and color. White people who want to live among that culture and color slowly take away the whole reason anyone wants to go in the first place.

It’s preferable to 1/2hr of them giving us the story behind every single candle, piece of macrame, bowl, picture etc. I just need to see around the room then let me out. I don’t care about their life stories.

Hahaha I couldn't stop laughing when I realised how the realtor was convincing the couple of completely other things than what they originally wanted... he's a good salesman.

Good for them. Ppl getting mad about empty and run-down buildings yet also mad about ppl buying them and improving them. Instead of getting mad, get financially literate, leverage your assets and level up! Im a person of color who grew up poor and my parents only had a GED. Instead buying fancy cars and sneakers, they saved every penny, bought properties and leveraged their assets. No excuses, folks.
Preach!! We need to stop victimizing our situation, and take ownership. Congrats to you and your parents for your longterm thinking and investing in properties.

It's the result of deliberate, systematic financial oppression for decades.The reason folks don't have homes of their own is because they were literally denied home loans and redlined out of those spaces. Don't believe me? JP Morgan Chase just announced (today) to allocate $14 billion in home loans for black and brown families to make things right.
