Not sure everything is accurate but it’s clear whoever directed this film respected the Zulu tribe and tried his best to encapsulate their spirit and bravery.
I also like to think in real life the British who are famously arrogant, found some new respect for the Zulu after this ordeal.
It’s a beautiful and powerful harmony, to finish off a true cinematic masterpiece.

I’m African American, their voices, harmonies, and tones are a thousand percent identical to the old male deacons(African American) who would sing in my family(maternal) church I heard growing up in the country side of South Carolina (in the USA). I’m sure it’s because the Zulu are a Bantu ethnic group, and a portion of the African American gene pool is from among the Bantu peoples of Central Africa: Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, the Republic of the Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo & Angola, as well as Bantu ethnic groups in Southeastern Africa, Mozambique & Zimbabwe. Added to the fact, all of them being such an interconnected, interrelated family, whether in Central, Eastern, or Southern Africa, linguistically, culturally, & genetically.

The singing's great, taken from Chief Buthelezi's mother. Buthelezi was Zulu Chief when the movie was made, he played his ancestor Cetchwayo. His mother turned Cy Enfield on to the Zulu music he and Stanley Baker were looking for. I like the girls' singing during the marriage ceremony.
    That's just personal taste.

This is the second song. the first song is one of aggression and revelling in the shaughter to come, and is a song of arrogance and pride. This second song is a song of regret, that such adversaries, who have proven themselves worthy, mst die, and that it will take many casualties on the Zulu side to accomplish the victory. The third and last song is a song of honor and a salute to an enemy that has proven himself so brave, and so strong, that it would be not only a great shame to wipe out such men, but that casualties necessary to do so would not be worth the result, and so this adversary is to be left in peace and great honor, as great as that of any Zulu.

Thanks for the information. I think your version of the events has more of the ring of truth about it. To this day there are people who think the British were in India to "build infrastructure"! Yeah they were, but only to haul their swag to the harbor to sell it to some other market they had penetrated, probably by force of arms. Your line about forgetting is particularly scary. I'm certain the Chinese have not forgotten the western warships steaming up the river bombarding Chinese towns so they would be good boys.

This is exactly why I believe it was Africans who created modern popular music today We can trace back the Blue's, Country music, Blue Grass, Jazz, Rock N Roll, Motown, R&B, Hip Hop, Rap, Classic Rock, Punk Rock Salsa, Cumbias, Merengue, Hard Rock, Delta Blues, Texas Rock, Country Rock, Doo Wop, Funk, Reggae pretty much everything ( except for classical, opera and various local folk music) to chants just like this one. They brought these beautiful chants to the new world and as they worked as the stories go they would chant in unison, all day every day ( which probably lifted their spirits from that F@cked up situation they were in ) which evolved to the Mississippi Delta Blues and from here it spread out to the rest of the country by these Bluesman or Rambling man as they were called. The 12 bar blues is the musical foundation of most modern and popular music. These nameless poor people sung so beautifully that it echoed around the world, louder than the conditions they found themselves in for a world still hears them through the music we all listen to today.

To all those hating on the British one thing you can't ever say about us. Is that we are cowards & that we don't respect our enemies. The Zulu warriors are seen as fantastic brave men by the British still to this day. How many of you hating on us can say those things. You see we don't get hated on by people's of other great brave nations just the easily defeated ones. Which admittedly us quite a lot. So stop being sore losers that was your biggest problem in the 1st place & before the Americans get all above themselves you beat 5,000 soldiers on home turf with the help of 7,500 French soldiers helping you. Our main forces were in the Asian continent. We proved how easy it would be to take your country back by sailing up to near the White House then marching right up to the white House & burnt it to a crisp & not a single one of yous done anything. We also told yous to keep away from Canada & don't go crossing that border again. To this day you still won't do it & that is yet another fact yous don't get taught about in your fantasy land. You've had thoughts about it & where thinking about trying before WW2 but you knew our Navy would have destroyed you so you thought better of it. It's great education isn't it.

@blaklagoon1. No problem Shaka was the zulu warrior who invented the asagi (short spear) and the bullhorn tactic where the main body of infantry attacks the opposition and the flanks encircle. This is what he tactically brought to the zulus. The bull horn tactic was used effectively in rorkes drift and isandalwanah. The tatic is studied and used by most military forces in modern militaries.
    Watch Shaka zulu for confirmation

I wish you had included the overlay of the British singing over the warriors singing. That was powerful. But glad to find this at all. I looked on the soundtrack first also.

In the film Zulu Dawn, the end credits have a very powerful song as the credits roll past. Several minutes, worth listening to. Oh, they are here under Zulu Dawn End Credits. Give it a listen.

@Ngobamakosi Yes, many just think or Rhorkes Drift and Islandwana but after research there were quite a few small battles in which we usually lost, the Zulu even had the main remnant of the 1st invasive force holed up in a makeshift fort for some months in which our troops nearly starved or were gradually dying of disease. Not until the 2nd much larger force came to the rescue in England did things turn around. When you read what size the English force was that then marched toward the..... Cont.

@mlafrt I used to room with a philosophy student who did a lot of reading about how war used to be waged. Some cultures, like the ancient Greeks, decided conflicts through very organized battles. People still died, and we think "how silly to die that way!", but in many respects she felt it was more civilized. In that kind of warfare, civilians were rarely killed. Now, the POINT of warfare is to kill civilians. I think some from the past might be shocked to learn there AREN'T rules to war

@Scooter7891 yes these are genuine zulu war chants that are passed from generation to generation. the zulu were known for using this phsycologica; tactic of instilling fear in enemies first before they attacked. The whole zulu war machine was built on intimidation through singing, shield beating and stamping the feat accompanied by extremely deep voiced war jeers and chants.

I think in this example......even though this exchange of songs didn't happen during any part of the assault on Rourke's's Drift.....if the man standing next to me shit himself at the sight of that, I'd be fine with it, because on the wrong day, I'd shit myself as well if that was the first thing I saw/heard at dawn. It's a hellva way to conduct psychological warfare

They worked out if they doused their shields in water bullets could be blocked, they had a great General/King, I am not sure how many VC's were handed out for this Battle of Rourkes Drift/Landing,but many were.Even the Zulu's were impressed, hence the warrior chant.

@slideharp1 ...What impressed me the most was how when the British government was unwilling to go in officially, British companies would rush in. Many thought the example of the British East India company could be followed in Africa.
I was well aware of Rhodes' charter in southern Africa, but had wondered how the UK ended up with Uganda, Nigeria, etc. Profits were private, risks were public; that is, I pocket any profit, but if things get bad I expect the government to send in troops.
